Even if you know what you are doing...

I've hosted outdoor LARPs (Live Action Roleplaying) for years. I felt some help was in order when we needed to run an indoor game, and Free Form Games really came through. It has a rich storyline, and comes with all the extras things that are needed. (PDFs for printing things like currency, clue cards, special capabilities, etc.) It also has guidance for the case where you need extra roles, or fewer roles.
It is not something you "open" and begin playing. It takes some prep on the part of the host, but the instructions tell what you need to do, and offer suggestions for how to set the mood for the game.
I ran a murder mystery with a my "A-Team" of LARPing friends and we had a blast. Soon after that I invited my "B-Team" of friends, and partnered each of them with the "A-Team" person who played their role in the first game. The partners simply played the part of a friend or relative who - since they knew the story, were able to fill in gaps and help smooth the evening for the newcomers so that everyone was successful. Both events were fantastic!

Thank you, that's great to hear! And the tip about partnering people up with those who had played before is really helpful.

Best Crime Dinners I know

I have played about 10 Freeform Games so far and most of them were really great! Especially in comparison to other crime dinner party games. I like the interactive rules that are basically applicable to all Freeform games. Sometimes the balance between the character interest groups is off in my experience but that's critique on a high level.

The best murder mystery company

I've used Freeform games for years and wouldn't go anywhere else for a murder mystery kit. Just the right combination of guidance and freedom.

We love freeform games

We love freeform games! All the information is detailed and sent with easy-to-follow instructions. Our guests always get stuck in with their character roles and there is much hilarity when the action gets heated with challenges and pickpocketing and killing! The advice and recommendations for different age groups is spot on!

Love the games but need to be more inclusive

I've had the pleasure of hosting a murder mystery party with 20+ guests for the second time, and I must say, the content and instructions provided by the game creators have been truly comprehensive and easy to understand for hosts like me. The result is always a fantastic time for everyone at the party, and for that, I'm genuinely thankful for the amazing stories you provide.

That said, I believe there is room for improvement in making these games more inclusive. For instance, in the "Wild West" game, there are indigenous American characters who are referred to as "Indians" without proper names. This mode of addressing indigenous people is quite offensive, and I believe it's possible to create an enjoyable game without causing harm to minority groups.

Similarly, the casino game assumes that everyone is heterosexual and includes elements like "seducing" other characters, but this is limited to interactions with the opposite sex. The game also only features straight couples. This doesn't accurately reflect the diversity of the actual population and doesn't always align with the preferences of my guests.

In summary, I genuinely love these games, but I believe there are some straightforward updates and changes that could make them significantly more inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Embracing diversity can enhance the gaming experience and ensure that all players feel comfortable and respected. Thank you for your great work, and I hope you consider these suggestions to make your games even better.

Hi Jessie,

Thank you very much for these considered comments -- we really appreciate your kind words about our games, and at the same time we absolutely recognize that there are things that we can be doing better. Our design direction around diversity and representation is continually under examination, and it's changed a lot already over the two decades that we've been operating.

In Way out West, we were concerned to represent the prejudices of the period, and of the 1940s Western movies that inspire the game. We talk a little about this, in the instructions for hosts that come with the game -- we felt that it was important to accurately depict the way that Native Americans were seen and talked about by the white settlers of the time, rather than portraying the situation as better for them than it actually was. But we completely understand and accept that some people may find this too uncomfortable to play, or may disagree entirely with the decision.

Casino Fatale is a bit similar, in that it's based on the novels and movies featuring James Bond, which are mostly quite aggressively heteronormative in their nature. But, we do recognize that even James Bond is evolving and modernizing now, and so at the next revision of Casino Fatale we do intend to improve the diversity of representation. There is always a tension, in producing a 'genre' work, between supporting the existing stereotypes and tropes of that genre, and trying to move it forward. We hope that in the future we will be able to do more of the latter -- with the help of generous and thoughtful suggestions like these.

The Best at What They Do!

I run theatre workshops in the Highlands of Scotland and have been using Freeform Games for many years. In that time I have shopped around for other similar companies and I've never found anything that comes close. The games are so much fun and I have used them many times for both adult and older children's groups and the feedback from the groups after the event is always really positive.
Recently I was unable to access my previously purchased games due to a computer issue and I emailed the company to see if they could help. I received a lovely email the very next day with all the details I needed to redownload by games. I rarely write reviews, but I have been so continuously impressed with Freeform Games. Highly, highly recommended! Great customer service and the games are the best around.

Total Newbie Family had a Blast

Our family enjoys an escape room any time we can all get together, but in the midst of a pandemic an escape room didn't seem like a good option. After spending hours researching different murder mystery games, Freeform was the most recommended. Unfortunately, our family is only 8 adults, and there aren't too many options for smaller groups (here's me requesting more!!), but we chose A Will to Murder. Our family loved Knives Out, and this is a similar set-up, though the Freeform Game definitely predates the movie!

I had never led any kind of LARP-style game, and no one in my family has ever played a game like this. If you are looking for a scripted mystery, this is NOT for you-- you will definitely need a group that can improvise and play into character. Again, my family has never done anything like this, but they took to it flawlessly. Even family members I would not expect to take on a fun accent really went for it!

I was the Lawyer, so I was in charge of knowing the game inside out, and I'll say a few of my own errors led to some big problems in the game. I spent a couple of days reading through everything, and still did not have every detail memorized, which led a few players astray. But otherwise the game is very well-made. I would recommend this game to others for sure.

Google Hangouts didn't really work - sound was too bad. We abandoned very early on. And then never paid for upgrade to use Zoom
Would have liked to try out the one where host can also participate but until I decide to upgrade Zoom will leave it

LOVE your games for my classroom!

LOVE what you provide. I am a dramatic art instructor for a school district in California (ages 8-18) and have struggled to keep students physically engaged and learning during COVID distancing. Your games have been invaluable! I have utilized a few of them to teach story, character development, motivation and camaraderie. The students have had a blast! (have altered Spellbound and A Heroic Death to online format with great success!). THANK YOU!!!

A Speak Easy Murder

This was my first murder mystery, playing or hosting. My group of friends aren't the most creative and are definitely not actors. Only one person from our group of 16 had ever done one before. Everyone loved it! And wants to do another one. It was really easy for everyone to get into their characters, and they fully embraced the other elements of the game. It became a lot more than just solving a murder. Which made it way better. I will for sure be playing another one pf Freeform's games.
