These people are greedy and unprofessional, it’s hard to get in contact with someone. I lost time and had to wait for my money to be returned because a car they had listed wasn’t at location and they couldn’t help at all. They took a payment without my permission. Watch these people!

Nice car
Nice car, very clean, but unfortunately the "low tire pressure" warning light blinked on half way through the rental. Returned the car on time...no other problems.

Terrible experience!
Terrible experience!
We got a bill for 100$ and then 700$ for inappropriate parking (big lie because we parked exactly from where we picked up).
Without any investigation and even before contacting us they withdrew 100$ from our credit card. After a week they tried to collect 700$ without any explanation or preliminary contact, luckily it did not go through thanks to security precautions. Still trying to reach someone from this scam group for any explanations.

RENTER BEWARE OF BAIT AND SWITCH
RENTER BEWARE OF BAIT AND SWITCH.
I had a good experience until all was done and G-A charged $10.25 for a bridge toll for which I had used my own pass. When I complained I was told the info about how they handle tolls—specifically not to use your own pass—must have been missed by me. So I asked where it was. And the person at the firm could NOT find it on their website or in their app! And it was clearly not in the Guide to Renting on the website that I reviewed carefully. Apparently you have to know to pose the question because the info is not listed in any place they automatically show you. The best they could do is say that if I qualified—meaning what exactly?—I would receive a refund in 3 weeks. This is interest-free borrowing of my money—if they don’t find a reason not to reimburse me. And if that, it is just THEFT! And I have no confidence in the firm to refund me given how the system is set up to blindside you. Bait and switch! Will never rent with this firm again. CROOKS.

Update to prior review.....Horrible…
UPDAGTE NOV 5, 2024.
DEPOSIT STILL NOT RETURNED. NEARLY 30 DAYS OUT NOW. And not surprising to me at all, the Getaround idea of providing customer service and assistance is to send me a Pre Fab canned response, as seen below, that says "Sorry you had a bad experience". Send by a representative whose job it is to send this sort of thing, and I feel bad for that rep, sitting in front of a computer screen somewhere in the world, making a low wage and spinning the Getaround song and dance. Nothing else those reps can do, they need their jobs. *End Nov 5 Update*
Update to prior review.....Horrible Company !! Rented rattle trap and unsafe car on Oct 12. Rental was $80.00 and had it for 7 hours. Unsafe, rattle trap, smelled horrible, dangerous pick up neighborhood. All bad.
And for this bad experience they took a $999.00 deposit. It is now November 1 and the deposit is STILL not returned. Horrible.
Have tried their customer service, which is email, no phone. The reps have been very nice. And have -0- authority. They do the "sing-song" response "we love you, we care about you....". And then have no answers and just send you to links with Getaround's terrible policies. Waste of time. Nice reps, likely min wage, with no authority, I feel bad for them.
Run from Getaround as fast as you can is my recommendation. They do not give a darn about customers. And have zero ability to provide useful customer service. Lesson learned. Caveat Emptor.

Efficient but costly extension
Fast verification, affordable prices, lots of cars in the SF Mission area.
But extending the rental for 30 min just to find a park space is too expensive…

predatory business practices
I have had an incredibly frustrating experience with Getaround on multiple occasions. Despite its user interface being far from intuitive and user-friendly, I decided to give the app another chance due to my frequent need for car rentals. However, having previously dealt with a filthy car and an unresponsive owner, I was particularly cautious with my next booking.
I booked a vehicle through the app and specifically inquired if the car would be clean. The owner responded that while they clean the vehicle as much as possible, it might not be "sparkly clean at times,” requesting that I “please manage your expectation as the vehicle is shared." Unfortunately, I didn’t see this response until hours before check-in due to app notification issues and spam filtering.
Given my past experience, where the car was in unacceptable condition and the owner was unreachable, I was understandably concerned about cleanliness. The owner’s vague assurance did not alleviate my concerns, leading me to cancel the reservation same day.
I paid $617.44 but was refunded only $278.72, with Getaround retaining over half of my payment—$338.72. While I understand the need for a late cancellation fee, this amount is excessively disproportionate and blatantly predatory. Charging $338.72 for canceling a booking is utterly exploitative. To then refuse any credit toward my account is abhorrent.
This experience underscores severe flaws in both Getaround's policies and their customer service. Potential customers should be aware of these unethical practices before booking.

Misleading and Dangerous - Avoid at All Costs!
I rented a car from GetAround for $490, expecting it to be in good condition. However, the car was a disaster from the start. The air conditioning, which was promised to be working, was broken, leaving me to suffer in extreme heat. The car also had dings, scratches, and trash inside(including a used cigarette!!).
During the rental period, I called the company to report these issues, especially the broken AC. I was told that I could continue driving the car and would be eligible for a refund if I filed a claim. Trusting their word, I did so, but the heat became unbearable, and I ended up with heat stroke due to their negligence.
When I tried to follow up, the company gave me conflicting information. First, I was shooed off the phone and denied any help. Later, they said a refund was possible, but all I received was a $90 rental credit—far less than the $490 I paid(less than 18% of the cars entire cost!!). This experience was not only frustrating but dangerous. I strongly urge others to avoid this company. They clearly do not prioritize customer safety or satisfaction. To add, nobody has confirmed nor checked the car at all to see if my claims are true even though they said it takes 48 hours to get to the car!)

kind of like airbnb for cars but if airbnb hated their customers, had zero customer service, and had no phone number. what a joke of a company.
in response to Laura’s reply: not true. immediately after the rental was ended i couldn’t call by phone. not only is this a lie, so is the claim right in the app that you charge the same for a full day as for 12 hours.

Getaround NOT a good choice anymore
Getaround, used to be a great place to rent local cars by the hour or the day even by the month however, over the last few months, they’ve updated their app and things have changed drastically. Example they now require up to $2000 deposit on your credit card for most rentals in advance. The second thing is they’ve raised their rates by about 25%. I cannot recommend using them at all anymore. They likely will be going out of business soon at this rate.

Warning
Warning: Getaround has NO Customer Service. No phone number, no email, no live chat, not even a bot. When they say friendly words like "contact us" they just route you to their help page with a list of Unhelpful articles.
They took my money. I'm trying to Verify my Profile. But it's not working. Their email does not respond. A secret backdoor phone number does not answer. Do they care? Nope. Not a bit.

Shady company! Renter beware!
I’ve never come across a more sketchy company! They charged us for pre-existing damages and when we tried to dispute it, they told us to take it up with the company that does the digital estimate! Which is hilarious considering they took a $100 claim management fee from us! They’ll also proceed with automatically taking payment for the damages. My bank initially blocked the payment and so Get Around kept sending emails threatening collections.
Agree with other reviewers that they always charge extra for fuel. Such shady practices - never using their services again!!!

Extra charges
Car was fine, but they charged me extra for gas despite fueling up to the top at the nearest gas station.
Edit: customer service upheld decision.

Liars and thieves
App says not to worry if their app doesn't show gas within 15% of gauge reading. Then they charged me for not refilling gas to full even though I did. Sent a picture of the fuel gauge, but then they changed and said their reader is more accurate than the gauge. Then they said give us the receipt to keep disputing, which of course I didn't have. Thieves!

Save yourself a headache and extra charges - Look elsewhere.
I'd highly recommend looking elsewhere if you're looking to rent a car. I just had my first experience with them this past weekend - and if your goal is to save a couple dollars by going w/ getaround as your car rental service, they'll likely charge you for it in the end making the savings near insignificant.
The service is convenient enough in theory - but they cannot regulate the quality/cleanliness of cars they rent on their service. So that's issue number one. The automated systems they install on each car they rent (responsible for monitoring fuel levels, unlocking/locking doors, etc.) also doesn't seem to be calibrated or fully operational - giving wildly inacccurate readings. The car I rented for the weekend seemingly had inaccurate readings from the start, but I went ahead with confidence that the actual readings on the dashboard for fuel level, etc. would speak for itself. They encourage you to refuel the car beforing dropping it off which is pretty standard of any rental company. Perfect, that's what most people do anyone to avoid being charged.
The problem in my case was, even after filling it up all the way, there's no way to guarantee that the system itself will register what the car itself (and the pump) is registering. WIth my rental, I'd filled up the tank (with a photo to provide proof that the gauges on the car itself has recognizes a full tank), but the getaround app / systems only registered the tank as 45% full, a VERY inaccurate reading. One that is impossible for me to sit there and troubleshoot. Luckily they provide an option to give a manual reading and require you to couple it with a photo of the gauge itself.
Unfortunately, that doesn't mean much as far as the company is concerned. Come to find out I was later told that the "margin of error caused by either the pump or the car itself" is to blame, and that their systems are "very accurate" and that the charge will stand. As a renter, the car or the pump or the getaround systems shouldn't be my concern AT ALL. Whether or not they're operating properly shouldn't be something I need to worry about. I did my due diligence and filled up the tank before dropping it off (even topping off the tires with air) - but with no actual human to bear witness to these issues, they default to charging you and stick with it.
TLDR - they might seem like the cheaper option on the surface, but whatever monitoring systems they install in each rental car seem to vary wildly in how accurate they are - and in the end, this likely means you'll be charged without any recourse (even if you provide photographic evidence). I know we all hate car rental companies, but I'd HIGHLY HIGHLY advise anyone to go with a more reputable company, and to avoid getaround altogether. Spending the extra money for piece of mind and to save yourself a headache is worth it. I will not be using their services ever again.

This company has gone downhill
I’ve rented out four different cars on Getaround over the past 9 years. They used to have amazing customer service for owners, and now they don’t even have a phone number you can call. Managing the rentals has basically become the owner’s responsibility, which is fine, but some of their policies are absurd. My car got a cracked windshield during a rental, was immediately rented out after that for a week, and now they aren’t willing to cover the repair because I didn’t submit within 5 days of the prior rental. Make it make sense. I’ll be pulling my car and recommending the same to the two people I’ve referred to the company.

Nothing but frustration as a Host and privacy risk as a Renter
As a Renter:
-Getaround does a great job hiding the fact that when you rent a car on their platform, the host of the car receives an email with your full name, birthday, drivers license number, and home address. I would never feel comfortable with that amount of personal data being shared with anyone whose car I rent. For many years it was only the first name and first letter of the last name that was shared, and that was perfectly fine. Knowing the home address, name, and birthday of a renter is a privacy risk and unnecessary.
As a Host:
-Renting out my car on Getaround has become more of a hassle over the years. The policy changes and decline in their Support in 2024 have truly made it unbearable now.
-If your car is damaged during a rental, you will need to fight tooth and nail to get your claim approved even if the damage is clearly within Getaround's terms. Claim communication is often drawn out over months and recently they've just stopped responding. Even their CEO, Eduardo, stopped responding after contacting him directly when all other attempts at communicating with Getaround Support or Claims departments failed. On one recent claim, they never gave an explanation as to why the claim was declined and would only respond advising that I can proceed with their arbitration process if I disagree with their decision.
-Getaround no longer penalizes renters for irresponsible behaviors such as leaving lights on after a rental that results in a drained battery or not locking a lockbox. These behaviors put the car at risk of not being able to start or of getting stolen if you don't check the car fast enough after a rental ends. Getaround used to fine renters for this and I've seen first-hand that after one fine, the renter tends to adjust their behavior. But now it's just allowed.
I would not recommend that anyone host their car on Getaround anymore due to how terrible they are to deal with, nor would I recommend that anyone rent a car on Getaround due to the privacy concerns.
