I used to love Mailbird, but I moved on

I used to love Mailbird, I've been using it for almost 10 years. The sleek design, convenient unified inbox, lots of small features here and there - it's all very nice. However, it feels like the team building it has been prioritizing the wrong things for many years now and the amount of small annoyances have reached a critical mass, so I decided to switch to a different email client. There's a number of bugs I encountered over the years that I reported, support provided a complex workaround each time (like running manual queries on Mailbird's SQL database), but the bugs are never fixed - I keep encountering them YEARS later. Some examples - snoozed emails getting stuck as unread, some attachments on the emails not working (show as being 0 bytes in Mailbird, I had to download them via Gmail), etc. Plus there's the lack of basic functionality (eg try finding something in a thread of 100+ emails - search only finds threads, doesn't work within them, so you have to read through everything manually). But the "cherry on top" is that for a few years now, Mailbird started showing in-app full page advertisements. Every time there's a big sale (like black friday or lunar new year or whatever), they basically show spam in the app for paying users. What a shame.

Regarding the problem with zero-byte attachments, this often happens if the local attachment cache becomes corrupted or if a security feature over which we have no control (like Advanced Threat Protection, ATP) is blocking third-party apps (such as Mailbird) from downloading the file. To resolve this, head to the following location on you device: C:\Users(UserName)\AppData\Local\Mailbird\Store\A'. Replace (UserName) with your Windows user's name - e.g. John Doe. Then, find the zero-byte attachment by typing its name in the folder search field and delete it from there. Next, try downloading it again in Mailbird, and please make sure that Mailbird is first whitelisted in your security/antivirus software.

Great customer service

I've been a Mailbird user for a few years. After getting a new computer and reinstalling Mailbird, I got an error message that my license key couldn't be used with the new installation. One email to Support and Diego responded that day with an easy solution. Great customer service from the Mailbird team!

Left feeling scammed.

These guys sell lifetime licenses and don't honor them. Was told to upgrade my license after I bought one in 2018. I have all the documentation from that purchase. Nowhere did it say it would only include X major versions.
Software was buggy when I last used it before I switched to Mac.

a simple and mature product

I've been using this software for about 7 years. It's a simple and mature product, and I find it very comfortable for my daily use. The interface is beautiful and customizable, and it's free from distractions. Mailbird's customer service is also excellent, with timely and effective responses. (I'm a 2.x version user.)

"Power user" features lacking

Support response and answers: 4/5 (They should provide/setup a "Case paused till development status" and "development status" else the calls just gets closed, no way of seeing/tracking if features are ACTUALLY considered, had been considered, or canned...). I started with 4.5, but degraded to 4, as there are no timelines to feature requests/etc.

Application look/feel: 3.5/5 It's a great look/experience overall, but the views/etc. needs more contrasts and alternating colours. non-Apple screens it's like a bland white with dark text, no lines no distinctions.

Application operations/Editors: 2/5 and here, the killers for me.. I could sorta handle the irritation of the constant spinning beach balls, but when it's happening as I'm compsoing/typing an email, that started to become a PITA (Yes, I do have oversized mailboxes.. plural).

The actuall killer for me: the inability to edit inline replies, and quoting/unquoting, nor able to BOTTOM respond... it's for new comers to emails that says every thing on top, and not inside the emails handling each subject/question as it should be handled.

I had to request refund (I should've started with the trial only :facepalm: as it was picked up before I even loaded my bought keys!) as there are nocommitment to fixing these things.

First of all, we’re sorry for the frustration you experienced, and we completely understand why the lack of visibility around feature requests and timelines can feel discouraging. Unfortunately, we’re not currently able to customize the statuses of individual support tickets (for example, showing “paused” or “in development”) within the software that we use to communicate with customers. However, every feature request we receive is internally linked to tasks in our product backlog. This means that even if a ticket is marked as Solved, it is never discarded. We keep a direct record of who requested what, and we proactively reach out once a feature has been delivered. This process has been in place rigorously since the launch of Mailbird for Mac and is designed to be fail-safe.

We also appreciate your feedback regarding the UI and visual contrast. While requests for UI changes of this nature have been relatively infrequent overall, your feedback has been duly logged for consideration by our product team.

Regarding inline replies, quoting/unquoting, and bottom-posting: again, so far these features have seen very limited demand from the wider user base. As a result, they are not currently prioritized on our roadmap. For this reason, we’re unable to provide any ETA, and it’s unlikely they will be implemented in the near term, as more widely requested features will take precedence.

We completely understand that these are essential “power user” features for some workflows, and we’re genuinely sorry that Mailbird for Mac did not meet your expectations in this regard. While we can’t make commitments on timelines, your requests remain logged, and we will reach out should these features be implemented in the future.

I wouldn't use it again

I wouldn't use it again. I'm currently using it. But if I had to decide again, I wouldn't use it. It's just not my favourite in terms of UX.

And the adverts for premium that pop up while I'm working on my PC are really annoying.

Great help & support

I have just changed computers and setting up old favourites has proved very difficult at times. Not so for mailbird.

Mailing List Issue resolved quickly and efficiently

Having moved from Outlook to Mailbird for my multiple email accounts, I was experiencing issues in sending a newsletter to some 45+ addresses.

I contacted Support and received a timely response with some suggestions which I might try.

Unfortunately, these did not immediately fix the issue and I went back to the support team where Gian was able to talk me through other possible fixes involving whitelisting Mailbird in my firewalls and Microsoft Defender.

I'm delighted to say that his suggestions were just the ticket and I am now up and running smoothly again

Thanks Gian - everything is back to normal…

Somehow I managed to register more computers than I had and being such a big fan of Mailbird the thought of having to move away was awful. I contacted the Help desk and very quickly Gian managed to get Mailbird back and saved me a lot of grief. Thanks so much, it's such a good program.
