Terrible company that thinks consumer rights don't apply to them

I purchased 3 glass wall art prints from this company. The images on their website made the prints look more vibrant than they actually are in real life. One of the prints still looks good enough, though, only because of its solid black background. The other 2 prints look lower quality than expected.

I emailed them to return 2 items and received no reply in 24 hours. I then opened a case in PayPal. They then responded to me outside of PayPal telling me there would be a 20% restocking fee. Just for any future buyers, please be aware the restocking fee is illegal and they cannot charge this, irrespective of what their terms and conditions state.

They are currently doubling down on their restocking argument, but obviously they can't win as PayPal, Small Claims, Trading Standards and Citizen's Advice will all be on my side, as the law is the law.

I'd give them a wide berth, they have competitors that are easier to deal with and don't try to break statutory consumer rights.

Update:

As the seller has recently responded, I shall explain what actually happened. I made contact with Citizen's Advice and was ultimately called by trading standards who then contacted the seller.

I did receive a refund, However, I had to cover postage for something that was of inferior quality to the images on their site. This of course does not meet UK or EU consumer law.

The seller then contacted me and then ultimately TrustPilot asking for my review to be taken down. TP did briefly remove my review, but I got in touch with them and provided email evidence of all communications, including those from CAB. The TP integrity team ultimately reinstated my review, as I had proven everything I said to be true.

Just because I received a refund minus return postage (I'm still out of pocket on that) does not change my experience. The items did not "pop" as they appear on the website and I had to argue my case to get a refund. Had I not fought for my refund and involved external agencies, the seller would still be illegally charging restocking fees.

There 8s nothing "Bad faith" about my review. TP relies upon the integrity of customers, they primarily allow these reviews without supporting evidence. I provided supporting evidence and my review was reinstated.

It took time and effort to get a refund, it took additional time and effort to communicate with CAB, TP and Trading Standards. I did this to ensure future customers are not cheated out of illegal restocking fees.

After all of that effort, I am still out of pocket for returning the items, as I had to pay postage. I couldn't be bothered to argue any more.

Take from this what you will. I'm not the only negative review.

Explanation According to UK and EU Consumer Law:

Distance Selling and Consumer Rights (Distance Selling Regulations / Consumer Contracts Regulations):

If a customer exercises their “cooling-off” right (wants to return a product without reason, usually within 14 days), they are generally responsible for the return shipping costs.

The seller is not obliged to cover return shipping, but this must be clearly stated in the contract or terms and conditions beforehand.

Faulty or Defective Products:

If a product does not meet the quality specified in the contract or advertisement, meaning it is faulty or misdescribed, the consumer is not required to pay for return shipping. In this case, the seller is obliged to refund the full price of the product and cover the return shipping costs.

Under UK and EU law, if the product is faulty or defective, the seller must cover all associated costs.

Restocking Fee:

Charging a restocking fee for faulty or misdescribed products is illegal.

If a product is returned entirely at the customer’s discretion (non-faulty product), the seller may charge a reasonable restocking fee, but this must be clearly stated in the contract and return policy.
