Discrimination and Breach of Equality Act 2010 – Management Failure

Extremely disappointed with the lack of accountability regarding accessibility and guest dignity. After a series of unprofessional interactions including being hung up on by management and a flat refusal to honor carer concessions under the Equality Act 2010, we were promised an investigation by the General Manager. Since then, communication has been cut off. We are not looking for 'freebies'; we are looking for a hotel that follows the law and treats disabled families with respect. We will be taking this further with VisitScotland and the EASS

Macdonald Windsor Hotel

Macdonald Windsor Hotel

One picture is of one of two bugs on the mattress. The other is a picture of the edge of the pillow that was sticking out of the pillow case (notice the hair, not mine). We checked in yesterday and around 4pm, I decided to take a nap. When I pulled back the duvet I noticed how lumpy the bed was. It was because the mattress pad was only on 2/3 of the bed and the rest lumped up. I called front desk and they sent someone to fix it. When he came, I pointed out how filthy the mattress pad was and that there were 2 dead bugs on the mattress. He got a new mattress pad and remade the bed.
Last night late, I decided I could not stay there. I told the front desk and was told that I could not get my money back for the remaining two nights.
We have always liked the Macdonald Windsor, not anymore.

Macdonald Windsor Hotel owes me money!

Fancy a trip back to the 80's

Fancy a trip back to the 80's? Then book yourself a stay at Caxton Manor...i feel sorry.for the staff, as they clearly have to put up with alot of complaining customers.

I booked a birthday treat for my wife and even upgraded to a Suite, however on arrival i started to worry as although the grounds were nice the general state of the hotel and the fixtures were worn and dated, we had arrived early so.made use of the Spa pool as we could not check in till.3pm...not a pleasant experience, freezing c9ld and dirty, looked like damp walls above the pool.

Checked in at 3pm to a room with dirty carpets , old and damged 80's furniture, a window that would.not.close, window you could.not open (no handle) , broken window panes , tatty walls and chipped etc etc...then tonthe best part, on pealing back the bedsheet, which was on fairness clean I found myslef looking down on the previous residents dirty stains all over the mattress and tiny black dots ( you know, bed bugs) in the corners....staff reaction was an alternate room, smaller and cheaper, dont worry they will refund the difference or a full refund...30.mins after checking in, i sped off down the road, thankful of a fell refund....lucky escape.

Macdonald Hotels - Gift Voucher SCAM

DO NOT BUY A GIFT VOUCHER FROM THEM
My wife and I were recently given a gift voucher, from a family member, with a 'Monetary Value' of £200, to use at Macdonald Hotels and Resorts.
It clearly says on the voucher that it it can be used for full or part payment for services within any Macdonalds Hotel.
The small print on the voucher does mention that terms and conditions apply, however those terms and conditions do not say that it is only valid against full price services and not all services.
So, when attempting to use the voucher, I found that it cannot be used to book a specific hotel at the 'Seasonal Discount' price of £219, for a two night stay, but only at the full rack rate of £303.
This effectively means that a generous £200 gift is only actually worth £116.
The difference is excessive as the hotel I chose offers a wide range of discounts (presumably because the hotel is not full).
The voucher is misleading to say the least, and now I need to explain to the family member (my son) that he has given me a gift that I don't want to use, as I think he has been 'ripped-off' and I would feel cheated if I stay there.
This is a very poor way of promoting hotels and can only be self defeating as it causes bad feeling from the outset.
I have written this review because I think that this sort of shoddy practice needs to be called out.

Disappointing gym and pool

This review is mainly for the health club at Houston House Hotel in Uphall. The pool and gym was closed again due to a staff issue early morning on Sunday 15th March. There are frequent problems with the boiler too. Not very impressive for the cost and very disappointing when you want to go for a swim after staying in the hotel.

We had planned a romantic night away…

We had planned a romantic night away for Valentines day, and I paid over £500 for 1 night, at what I was expecting to be a high end luxurious hotel.

Upon arrival, we were told that there was no space at the hotel car park, and were given directions to a public car park that we could use for the night, at our cost. After 20 minutes, a space eventually became available - not a great start!

Our bedroom was described as a super deluxe double room, but actually turned out to be a tired room, with two single beds pushed together to make a “double”.

We headed down to use the hotel pool and other other facilities, only to find a VERY cold pool, which was not particularly clean either. This was one of the selling points for our stay, but in reality was a big disappointment.

The only redeeming feature of the evening was the pre-booked spa treatments. They were very relaxing, and we thoroughly enjoyed them.

Next morning, we headed to the restaurant for breakfast (included in the price), which we were advised would be a buffet due to the volume of guests. The buffet was no more special than a Travel Lodge or Premier Inn, and given the price we paid, it was another let down. We were taken to our table and had to change both seats which were absolutely disgusting, with the upholstery covered with food stains. Many others were in the same condition. Although we had been advised that the buffet was the only options, a neighbouring table asked for a menu and promptly ordered an eggs Benedict, which was not available from the buffet. Very inconsistent service.

I would not recommend staying at this hotel. We’ve stayed at better hotels for half the price. There is nothing luxurious about this tired hotel and we felt that we had been badly ripped off. The hotel appears to excuse all of these negative issues, and thinks it can charge extortionate rates just because of its location and views.

Spa Day Frimley Hall Macdonald Hotels

Myself and a friend had a Spa day at Frimley Hall and it was amazing.
The staff were so professional and helpful.
We had Afternoon tea, which was really enjoyable.
We both had treatments in the Spa and they were also amazing.
Would highly recommend.

Disappointing Wedding Experience – Service Not as Promised

We are extremely disappointed with our experience hosting our wedding at this venue in East Kilbride, Glasgow. Unfortunately, multiple serious issues on the day significantly affected what should have been one of the most important days of our lives.

We have since made formal complaints and follow-up emails, all of which have been ignored. The lack of accountability and communication only compounds an already upsetting experience.

We would strongly advise anyone considering this venue for a wedding or event to think very carefully, as the service provided did not match what was promised.

Great Customer Service

I would like to thank Fiona at central reservations in Scotland. I could not locate a gift voucher and we have booked to have an overnight @ Aberfoyle MacDonald hotel tonight. Fiona checked multiple email addresses and managed to locate our voucher. Her efforts were very much appreciated and we can now look forward to our overnight stay. Great customer service 🙏

Spa Break Disappointment

My Brother and sister-in-law booked spa break for my birthday. Check in was fine. Bar and restaurant staff were lovely.

However my sister-in-laws spa experience was shocking. The lady doing her treatments asked her very intrusive questions making her feel very stressed not at ease and very upset.

I was deeply shocked at some of the questions and some things she inferred. We were there to be pampered and relax. My own lady was lovely but it was so upsetting to hear that my sister-in-laws wasnt so much so that I put in a complaint to MacDonalds Hotels Head Office and guess what surprise surprise I have never received an apology or even a response. We wont be going here again.

Wish I could put 0.

Wish I could put 0.
I booked a spa break at Frimley as a solo guest and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing.

The spa and pool areas were extremely busy with families, making it difficult to relax or swim. My treatment therapist arrived late, and the treatment itself felt rushed and below the standard expected for a spa break.

The main issue arose with dinner. I had checked on arrival that my £25 dinner allowance could be used for room service, as the restaurant was fully booked, and was told this was fine with an additional £8 room service charge. When the food arrived, I was told I needed to pay the full cost of the meal, contradicting what I’d been told earlier. The server removed the food to “check with a manager,” leaving me waiting in my room while it went cold, before returning to say it wasn’t included.

At that point I felt uncomfortable and decided to leave. I was later called by the hotel acknowledging there had been confusion about my package, but by then I had already left.

Overall, the experience lacked clarity, care, and consideration. What was meant to be a relaxing break became stressful, and I left feeling let down rather than looked after. I would not return or recommend.

Spa in Bath city, UK

I stayed in Bath Spa hotel in Bath for 2 nights(25, 26 Dec 2025) and the experience was amazing. I specifically liked the spa treatment by the therapist(Deb) who was very professional. It was a 55 min session(hot stone massage), a must try session if you go to Bath.

What a let down!

4th visit at Inchyra and the last. Staff themselves are warm and friendly and the quality of the food and spa treatments are good but the hotel management is extremely poor. A Reform Party event was held at the hotel conference centre and hotel guests were told nothing in advance. Absolute parking chaos, protestors and attendees shouting obscenities. Major police presence. Completely ruined our calm relaxing Spa and the company could not care less.

Beware of purchasing ‘worthless’ gift vouchers

I would like to share my experience regarding a £150 Macdonald Hotels gift voucher that my daughters purchased for us last Christmas. Sadly, the entire process has been deeply disappointing.
When the voucher was bought, my wife was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Between chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and her recovery, we were unable to plan a trip during the early months of the year. Once she was well enough, we attempted to use the voucher towards a stay at the Dona Lola Resort for 1 May. We were surprised to discover that the voucher could only be applied to full flexible rates, not the far cheaper discounted rates available online. This meant that—even after applying the £150—the total price would have been higher than simply booking the discounted rate without the voucher. As my wife needed the break for her recovery, we had no choice but to book without using the voucher.
Later in the year, as the expiry date approached, we tried to use the voucher for a night away in the UK. We then learned that the stay itself had to take place before the expiry date—not simply be booked beforehand. This left us with less than a week to use it, at a time when I had just undergone back surgery and travelling was impossible.
What has upset us most is the impact on our daughters. They worked multiple minimum-wage jobs while studying and saved their own money to buy this gift for us—a heartfelt gesture after a very difficult year. Their message on the voucher said: “We can’t wait for next year to be back to normal… We hope that you can put this towards a stay at the Dona Lola.” It breaks our hearts that their thoughtful gift has essentially gone to waste.
We contacted Macdonald Hotels explaining the circumstances and asked, very reasonably, for a short extension or some flexibility. The reply we received was simply that they were “unable to provide any extensions at all.” No consideration, no goodwill, and no compassion, despite the circumstances.
As a family who has stayed at the Dona Lola seven or eight times over the years, we expected better. We were hoping to return again in April 2026 for my wife’s birthday. After this experience, we will
never stay again..
For a company that markets itself on hospitality, the lack of empathy and unwillingness to honour a meaningful gift during a period of medical hardship has been incredibly disappointing. I would urge anyone considering purchasing gift vouchers from Macdonald Hotels to be aware of the very rigid terms and the limited practical value they may offer.

Wished I had read the all the reviews before booking this hotel . Paid £122 for bed , breakfast and a bottle of Prosecco on Groupon for the worst nights sleep in a small uncomfortable bed , No breakfast as the chef didn’t turn up ! and was offered a glass of Prosecco instead of a bottle at 8am in the morning as they don’t give bottles out ! After complaining they finally gave me a bottle . Never again would I stay here .

Botley Macdonald

This hotel is vile. Our room looked like it was from the 1970s; I was greeted with a filthy carpet, a food menu under the table topper, a musty smell, mould in the bath, grotty furniture and a TROUSER PRESSER?!

Also, there are only 2 plug sockets in the room, neither of which are by the bed?!

Calling the pool area a spa is laughable. Dirty cups everywhere, stiflingly hot, and dirty towels littering the chairs. The changing room was even worse. Mould in old rundown showers, floor was filthy, dirty robes everywhere all over the floor.

All the communal areas were more like what a 2 star hotel would be; dirty walls, doors that look like someone's kicked it in and rubbish on the floor in reception.

There is absolutely no way this hotel is 4 stars, give it a miss and stay literally ANYWHERE else. You only have to look at the other reviews to see.

Abysmal customer service

Absolutely appalling service from The Compleat Angler, the Macdonald Hotel in Marlow.

During a two day stay our room was not serviced despite us ensuring we were out at the appropriate time and had left the Please Service Room sign on the door.

We were left with no toilet roll, no drinking water, dirty cups and glasses, dirty towels in the bathroom etc. We had to provide our own toilet rolls and bottled water.

I am suffering from terminal cancer and we were celebrating our wedding anniversary so this treatment was abysmal.

Worse when we complained we were accused of lying. At Macdonald Hotels the customer is always wrong!
