Unacceptable Packaging of a Safety-Critical Product — Child Bike Seat
I recently ordered a child bike seat from Mantel, and I was genuinely shocked by how it arrived. The seat was shipped across the country in its original retail box only — no outer carton, no protective wrap, nothing. For any product this would be poor practice, but for a child safety item it is completely unacceptable.
🔴 Safety concern: A child bike seat is a safety-critical product. The packaging arrived visibly damaged, and there is a mark on the bottom-left side of the seat suggesting it took a direct impact during transit. Structural damage to a child seat is not always visible to the naked eye — meaning I cannot trust the integrity of a product my child will depend on. This is not a minor inconvenience. It is a genuine safety risk.
🔴 Privacy concern: This is the first online order I have ever received where the contents were fully exposed to anyone handling or observing the shipment. Neutral outer packaging is a basic, standard expectation from any online retailer.
🔴 Customer service failure: After receiving the order in this condition, I sent Mantel multiple emails — none were answered. I eventually had to call them to get any response at all. When I finally reached someone, the outcome was deeply disappointing: Mantel offered no acknowledgment of wrongdoing, and no meaningful resolution. Their only offer was a return — which is not a gesture of goodwill. It is the legal minimum required under EU consumer law for any online purchase. Offering the bare legal minimum while taking zero responsibility for shipping a safety-critical product in a damaged and exposed state is, frankly, not good enough.
I would caution anyone purchasing safety equipment for children from this retailer.

However, we are permitted to dispatch the child bike seat in its original packaging.
If you had wished to receive the parcel in unmarked packaging, you should have specified this in advance.
We do not infringe upon your privacy in this way.
If an order is delivered damaged, it can be returned; you state that this is not a solution.
However, if an order is delivered damaged, it must be returned precisely because the product may no longer be safe to use.

Holiday Saving Super Service
We were bike packing and at the end of day one a spoke broke and ripped a hole in my wheel rim (bike 25yo with rim breaks). We arrived at Mantel Rotterdam just before closing on Easter Sunday. Despite the time Dik and Tobies were amazing. They found the right wheel, transferred my cassette etc and even oiled my chain. They stayed late to finish the job to make sure we could get back on our tour. A big thank you to them both, you saved our holiday!
