Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 160 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. People frequently struggled to reach customer support, facing extremely long waiting times on the phone and dealing with unhelpful representatives who provided no real solutions to their problems. Reviewers also reported severe delays with claim payouts, often waiting for months while dealing with repeatedly denied benefits, lost documentation, and endless bureaucratic hurdles. Some reviewers were happy with specific interactions, noting that certain customer service representatives provided polite and effective assistance when sorting out difficult issues. A few consumers even experienced prompt responses and quick resolutions when connecting with helpful staff members who successfully handled their inquiries.

On March 18

On March 18, 2026, I spoke to Annie I., Customer Service Rep, Group Savings and Retirement Solutions. She helped me in a way that your other reps, from various departments could not, during a period of 5 months - they just kept transferring me from one department to the next - VERY DISAPPOINTING! .

I appreciate the professionalism, courtesy and patience of Annie and I do hope you will understand and appreciate her value. You should give people like her monetary rewards, instead of just saying "Thank you," because Respect, appreciation and ...Money Talks!

Stay away from their banking and their credit cards. Service is horrible. One needs a vacation to get someone to pick up a call, their website is unfriendly, hard to navigate impenetrable fortress, they do not provide online statements as well as paper statements. It has to be one or the other. In a case of postal strike there is no way to get a statement, one has to figure out from transactions how much is owned. Just stay away from that horrible company to save yourself lots of headaches.

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service. They actually told me they refuse to clarify a question so I could properly answer it. And when I complained that their service was lacking and they didn't call people back and had no integrity in their responses, I was denied purchasing their insurance. I didn't get a rate change they just denied me. I'm thrilled because I would never apply with them after reading more reviews. I was semi forced since my workplace uses them. Save yourself time and money and look somewhere else. They have no care or consideration or clue what they are doing.

My husband and I could not get into his Rrif via their website. The call back was an arrogant young man who I do believe he thought .....As it turned out he actually had to unlock something for us to get in. No apology for his arroagance. Sadly it was through his previous employer that it was with that company.

Possibly the single worst company I've ever dealt with.

We are unfortunately forced to be members of Manulife Insurance. As a retiree who lives out of Canada, Manulife's processes are designed to make accessing benefits as difficult as possible. They do not accept local codes for procedures like dental. They constantly change what is needed. They lose claims. My average number of contacts to recover my funds is 5-6 contacts. I have stopped using o send them things as they repeatedly claim the claims were not received. Online submission defaults to Canada and necessitates sending an email. Manulife has been "getting more calls than normal" for six years now. If you are that busy, hire some additional staff to deal with the phones. Lastly, and yes-I recognise this is a petty gripe, but the hold music is infantile and played at such volume so as to make waiting on hold as unpleasant as possible...though that may be the point.

Complete incompetence

I have been waiting now for over two months for my retirement payments to start .Paperwork was completed in early January ,I was told the process only take a few weeks and my first payment would be end on January .
Manulife always collected their monies on time as long as they are colecting and making money off you everything is fine ,however when you want to start colecting on your hard earned money this company performs with great incompetence.
I was told more then a few times now that everything was set up and payment will happen in a few days .
NOTHING , Still waiting .

April 2026 .
Still waiting on my funds ,Manulife has admitted they were overwhelmed in January ,my financial person at Lakeside Financial ( Mike Rienau)in Hamilton has proven to be completely incompetent .Manulife life financial has sent me documentation showing they advised Mike filled out paperwork wrong ,however Mike refuses to listen . As of April 28 I still have nor recieved any money from my investments .
The incompetence is running wild at this place .
Find a reputable institute to invest with .

How is manulife still allowed to operate as a business. Manulife shame on you if you even care to read your client's review. After 7months of submitting a claim all I hear is "still under review" after submitting all documents, they will even ask for same duccument twice. Worst mistake I ever make was paying out of pocket should have allow them deal with hospital direct.

Unacceptable delays in policy documentation after approval

Policy approved in late January 2026 but still no policy documents as of late February. I've called Manulife twice; the second rep, Edenny, simply repeated that documents had been 'requested' with no real explanation or ownership. I was later told my perfectly valid address had been marked as 'bad' with no proactive contact to confirm it. I've now had to file a formal complaint just to get basic policy paperwork. Very disappointing service for something as fundamental as life insurance documentation.

Manulife…. Be careful

So thinking the only way you would be associated with Manulife would be through your work. Why, cause they’re cheap.
My company separated from them and thousands have been trying to close their accounts. Manulife has made it super difficult to transfer funds. I guess they ate desperate to hold onto your funds as long as they can.
Each time I have called Manulife I have gone from threats that they will end the phone calls based on my concerns.

Their portal site is useless

Their site is horrible for determining status of pre-authorized drugs. According to service rep, approved information shows under claims, but nothing ever posts to the portal and it requires a phone call to support to get the information. Pre-authorization also only lasts for 1-2 years, but there is no communication about this and you only find out when denied a claim. Then you have to pay to have your physician fill out a form and then wait multiple weeks for Manulife to approve/deny. And then when they finally do process, you just get a generic "a claim was processed for $0" with no information, requiring to call in again to know wtf is going on. They'll also deny their own form if they update it between processing time because it is "outdated".

Manulife Travel ins don’t care

Manulife Travel ins don’t care. The incompetence I’ve dealt with is scary. They could not understand a word I said. I ended a hour later pulling my hair n spoke to the same assistant from the same HR before. I still got no where. Avoid at all cost they are awful and don’t care. I never could cancel my travel ins.
If you need a travel ins I encourage you to look into So Nomad 1-855-221-4555 they were charging me 350$ less than Manulife.

Unauthorized doubling transactions

Unfortunately my company deals with Manulife for RRSPs. I decided to make a lump sum purchase of RRSPs this year and they automatically took the lump sum payment twice. Absolutely depleting my chequing account..I asked to please reverse the double lump sum withdrawal and it's been over two weeks. Now dealing with ISF charges in my chequing account. Manulife has responded they are still trying to reverse the double payment witch was an error on their part. If it wasn't for my company dealing with Manulife I would go elsewhere. Probably the worst customer service and website I have ever felt with or experienced in my life.
