Bathroom installation failed

We had a full bathroom installation carried out by Mariposa Kitchens & Bathrooms Ltd in 2024.

Within around 18 months, the shower failed, with grout coming away and water penetrating through the floor. When the area was opened up, the timber structure beneath had already suffered significant water damage.

We reported the issue in February 2025 while the company was still trading but received no response. The company has since been dissolved, and despite further attempts to resolve the matter directly, we have not received any meaningful engagement.

We have now had to arrange repairs ourselves.

Very disappointing experience given the nature of the work and how quickly it failed.

Beautiful bathroom suite but a…

Beautiful bathroom suite but a catalogue of failures in fitting and design.
Shower screen is not compatible with the bath as it hits the taps when it opens inwards and you can’t reach the taps, it was turned around but then it hits the vanity unit and water leaks all through it from the middle panel and when you open it, the water runs straight onto the floor.
Bottom plinth of vanity is damaged and we are still waiting for the replacement, 9 weeks later!
Plaster blew out the day it was done and the rest was left looking like a cheese grater.
No silicone around the bottom of the toilet, only discovered this when we found a huge leak at midnight that damaged the new flooring, plaster and skirting, of the skirting wasn’t even fixed onto the wall in either places!
My husband had to stop the leak and was up until 1.30 am doing this.
Tile edges not finished off around sink and one end is too short, bath incorrectly fitted, only silicone around the tiles and that is already coming away. Bath panel is blown and cracked because it wasn’t fitted correctly and was left proud, allowing water to pool on top of it.
Today, 9 weeks after the installation, we discovered DAYLIGHT… yes a gaping hole under the vanity where you can look straight into our garden.
Fuming, beyond fuming. This will be resolved

List of issues with bathroom refit…

List of issues with bathroom refit April 2023 By Mariposa

      1.    Before work commenced we expressly requested that no pressurised plastic water plumbing was to be used in the installation, however on commencement, the plumber started to use it and it was only our intervention that prevented this happening.
      2.    Before work commenced we expressly requested that the new toilet cistern was to be fitted with a Fluidmaster ‘Flapper Flush’ mechanism, this was ignored.
      3.    The new waste plumbing was initially installed running uphill from both the shower and the underside of the vanity unit, to the point where the pipe exits through the wall. It was only when we highlighted the problem that this was rectified. Descending waste and drain runs are one of the most basic and elementary rules of plumbing and we are amazed that any plumber would think this was either acceptable or good practice.
      4.    The basin waste was incorrectly fitted and the black sealing washer was sticking out to one side when viewed from above. This had caused a minor leak and certainly wouldn’t have made a reliable lasting seal. This has been rectified.
      5.    The door set for the shower was under size necessitating a wooden packing piece to be fitted. We are uneasy as to how long this will last before ingress of water causes the wood to rot, despite a laminated overlay having been stuck on.
      6.    The door set for the shower did not run parallel with the edge of the tray. Whilst this didn’t affect the function it doesn’t look particularly good. This was rectified.
      7.    The plasterer failed to remove the extractor fan before replastering and the new one is smaller, leaving an unfinished area around it. The plasterer work was generally of a poor standard.
      8.    The electrician refitted the light pull cord backing to the ceiling with only one screw causing it to come loose when used. Also, only one set screw was used to hold the switch part in place. (We have rectified these two issues ourselves).
      9.    When the plumber had finished the basic installation, we noticed the toilet pan was not screwed to the floor. When asked he said he never did and just relied on the silicone bond to the floor. Manufacturers don’t put screw holes in toilet pans for no reason. We are amazed any professional would think this is an acceptable standard of fitting. (We have rectified this ourselves).
      10.   We have had to spend an hour and a half cleaning dried on PVA and plaster from our own step ladder. We told the plasterer he could use it but would have expected it to be returned to us in the same condition as when he started.
      11.   The new wall cabinets weren’t secured at the bottom and were wobbling about. This was rectified would we pointed it out. The doors however are still not closing flush at the top.
      12.   During the works, wiring for the extractor fan had not been isolated correctly and the plasterer got an electric shock while working.
      13.   The toilet seat did not seem fit for purpose and the top part had popped out of its locating points several times. This was rectified when pointed out. We have since had to replace the toilet seat ourselves because the new we broke because of original misfit
      14.   We waited 6 weeks for the correct radiator to be supplied. We have since realised that they used an upright radiator sideways without our knowledge.
      15.   We had to call Mariposa back when water started coming through our ceiling. This was rectified and Malcolm paid for painting.
16. We found a piece of shower fitting in a box that we pointed out and they fitted.
17. Eventually we were given an apology and £1000 discount but this has done little to reassure us . We have asked for receipts and guarantees promised but not received. I think our expensive bathroom refit will not last very long sadly. The whole experience has been absolutely awful.
18. We have on 05.06.23 had to call the company back as our shower is still leaking now in a different place . Water seen coming through our porch.
19. They have been unable to rectify the leak and because my husband does not want Malcolm or his “ team” of supposedly qualified fitters entering our home again we have asked another company to do the work. They have found the mistakes and will be completely removing the shower tray and boarding at considerable cost to us.
20. Mariposa are not recommend. We can supply photos and videos to anyone who wishes to see them.
