Refusing to return £100 pre-authorisation

⭐☆☆☆☆

Be warned — Motor Fuel Group took £100 pre-authorisation from my account for fuel on 6th September and I’m still waiting nearly a week later to get MY money back. My fuel cost £6.17 for a jerrycans worth of petrol for the lawnmower, yet they think it’s fine to hold onto £100 of my money.

It’s disgraceful, inconvenient, and frankly unacceptable. If this is how they treat customers, I’d seriously think twice before filling up at one of their stations.

The following companies use the motor fuel group:
Morrisons
BP
Shell
Texaco
Esso
Murco
Jet

I rang my bank but they can’t help as the transaction is pending, so I rang motor fuel group and they said they can’t help either because it’s pending. They have something seriously wrong with their finance system. Once the cost of £6.17 cleared the pre-authorisation charge should have been returned to my account.
The person I spoke to refused to put me through to a manager.
They should not be allowed to take £100 for pre-authorisation! It’s absolutely disgusting.

When you use pay-at-pump for fuel, the transaction works a little differently from paying inside. Here’s a breakdown of how the pre-authorisation process works:
1. Card inserted or tapped
When you put your card in the pump terminal (or tap/contactless if supported), the system doesn’t know how much fuel you’ll take yet.
To manage this, the system requests a pre-authorisation hold from your bank.
2. Pre-authorisation request
The pump asks your bank to reserve a fixed amount of money on your account.
This amount can vary by station or network, but it’s typically £100 in the UK
Your bank checks if you have at least that much available. If yes, your bank puts a “hold” on that sum, temporarily reducing your available balance (though the money isn’t actually taken yet).
3. Fuel dispensed
You fill up your car.
The pump keeps track of exactly how much fuel you take.
4. Final charge
Once you hang up the nozzle, the system finalises the transaction.
Instead of charging the full pre-authorisation, it only charges you for the actual fuel dispensed (e.g., £25.00). This is the amount actually paid for fuel dispensed.
The unused portion of the pre-authorised amount (eg £75) is released by your bank back to your account.
5. Hold release
Depending on your bank, the release of the hold can be instant or may take a few hours to a couple of days to show up correctly in your balance.

Do not use this company

Today I forgot my wallet at home so had no means to pay and yes 100% my fault. What i did not appreciate was being spoken too in a rude manner. I explained my situation to be told "I'm not interested"
I was called brother and mate which i fund rude as a man of 55.
The staff also try to intimidate you saying how you have broken the law and they will get the police. As an ex police officer I most certainly know this was not the case and anyone not knowing the law will feel intimidated by the staff. Maybe the staff should be re trained i how to interact with people and actually know the law before quoting it. I will not be using any MFG Company in future as the whole interaction was awful

Telegraph Hill…

I ended up visiting the Telegraph Hill branch whilst on my journey and couldn’t fault it at all. The staff (especially a gentleman named Rocky) are so friendly and welcoming that I have now stopped several times and make this my preferred place to get fuel whilst on the road. The shop is always clean and well stocked and I’ve thankfully never had an issue.

If I could rate this dire company it…

If I could rate this dire company it would be zero not one.
Purchased some Calor gas, given wrong bottle, so called their head office put through to some overseas pleb who said to return back to Morrisons Petrol station for exchange.
On arrival given excuses that they couldn’t issue a replacement or refund as their head office must email station to authorise this.
Obviously lies as their customer services didn’t mention this at all!
I will never use a Morrisons station again obviously consumer rights were on my side but they just kept putting obstacles in my way to gain a refund or replacement!
They need investigating and Morrisons should be ashamed selling their stations to MFG… more like Motor Fraud Group…

Poor Handling of Forecourt Error

On 24 February 2025, I filled up at the Morrisons-branded Nantwich forecourt. I attempted to pay, but due to a cashier error, the transaction failed without my knowledge. Months later, I received a penalty notice from Fuel Guardian (part of MFG) demanding £87.50.

Although they eventually admitted cashier error and refunded the penalty, they refused to offer any apology or goodwill gesture for the stress caused. Their communication was also very heavy-handed.

Customers should be aware that many Morrisons-branded forecourts are operated by MFG. I recommend checking MFG’s own reviews (Trustpilot currently shows a rating of around 1.5 stars) before deciding to use their sites.

Based on my experience, I will not be returning or using any forecourt operated by MFG.

TERRIBLE, I’m a cab driver which has an electric car I was stranded in their stations with only 6%, I couldn’t get it to work which I then called customer care and a very rude and spiteful individual called BEN was not helpful and also closed the phone on my face, MFG you should be ashamed for have such employees, you have lost your 2 year customer who was charging everyday.i asked him if he could charge it from his end and he didn’t even care to every time i tried to speak he kept speaking over me and called me rude for trying to speak, i felt bullied and humiliated.

Went to the Morrisons petrol station…

Went to the Morrisons petrol station Riversway Preston run by this company. They had previously overcharged me for 3 out of 7 items in the shop and after a terrible customer service experience and complaint they gave me a £10 voucher. I used this in store this week put was told by the hapless after 10 attempts to scan the voucher that I could not use it. I asked to speak to the manager - Anna appeared after several minutes who simply said "yes". No introduction, no customer service, no apology for the inconvenience. I then had to guide her through what she needed to do to use the voucher. I have no idea why these staff are running a petrol station. They have zero customer service skills and leave products strewn across the floors when shelf stacking. Please check your receipts when using this store.

Ev charging is nothing but problems.

Ev charging is nothing but problems.
Barnetby top off the m180 I have tried to charge 3 different evs and every time I have to move to another charger as there’s an error which means £45 pre authorised each time, most recently 3 times I had £45 taken, it’s now been a week and I am still waiting for this to be returned. If you can use another charger station take my advice and do so unless you have a few hundred quid to play Russian roulette with your money

Visited Leagrave Luton

Visited Leagrave, Luton last Saturday evening and I was impressed by how clean the site was (not surprising really when I saw how hard the young guy running the site was working!) I was recharging and, again, the charging bays were very clean and tidy, charger worked perfectly first time and speed was pretty good (between 55 - 105 for most of the session). Pricing is an issue for me though - kW/h for charging and the ‘meal deal’ price was almost twice that of a typical Tesco!! All in all though, a pleasant experience setting me up for the drive back to Lancashire.

I recently received a fine for overstaying the 20 minutes in one of the shell garage Fuel stations, I’m making contact with them and informing them. My Car had actually broken down which prevented me leaving the station in the correct time period. They were very quick to apologise for the inconvenience and cancel the ticket, Prabhakar was so Responsive and really helpful throughout the whole situation and went above and beyond, such amazing service thank you again

Their newly installed EV charger doesn't work.

Tried to use a new charger at Elevetham Heath Morrison's. The car charger has recently been installed replacing one that worked perfectly. The MFG charger wouldn't accept a credit card (I tried several). No number on the charger for who to contact, so got a number from google, apparently the software on their newly installed charger is out of date and won't accept credit cards, but they suggested I use their app, not going to do that. I can't charge at home and this location was my preferred charger, not any more.

Overall their charger isn't at all intuitive and in my view the worst charger I have used in the 4 years I have had electric cars.

The reason was because I looked dodgy .
Really rude and unhelpful and the manager just hids out the back when you go in to complain
Morrisons doesn't take responsibility even though they name is above the door(we've sold it its nothing to do with us)
