Reason For My First Job In Film

My First Job in Film was great in that it helped collate and direct jobs relevant to me to one place. While I wrote many applications, I only received three responses and I believe that is rather normal. Nonetheless, knowing how My First Job in Film works, it's up to the employers to reach out after the application process. My First Job in Film was also instrumental in that it provided me with lots of different resources to form my application letters. As a subscriber, I even got a call with their staff to get some advice on how to better tailor my applications.

One rejection, one ghosting, and one work placement later, I was lucky enough to be offered a full-time placement.

My First Job In Film - experience

My First Job In Film is positive. I loved the focus on entry-level jobs and how they are categorised. E.g. work experience and internships. They massively helped me find a work experience that was the right length for me and worked with the term and holiday dates for my degree.

Hi Angel, Thank you for your feedback. I can see you have only ever applied for one job on our site. I am sorry that you had a bad experience. I can assure you that the jobs are real, that's why people successfully get them. I do understand your frustration that some recruiter names are withheld, I wish we could show them too. But many larger feature films have to operate in the restrictest confidence so they can not advertise openly to avoid unnecessary attention. Likewise companies just prefer to be anonymous so they don't receive unsolicited phone calls and emails. I would prefer a transparent system, so everyone can clearly see all the great companies and productions we work with, but its not always possible. However, it is a only a minority of companies that are anonymous so its not too bad. With regard the rolling monthly internship schemes, yes, lots repeat each month as new interns are hired each month so the job adverts for these positions do repeat by the very nature of it. Would you like a 1-2-1 career advise session with a member of our team? Please email us on info@myfirstjobinfilm.co.uk and we can arrange to help you find your first job in film with a clear plan and some new ideas on achieving it. Best wishes, Team MFJF

Great opportunities and resources!!

I have been lucky enough to get 2 jobs from MFJF, and both those have been amazing experiences which have opened the door to even more opportunity! The website is clear, easy to use and has a bunch of amazing resources (eg. resume templates for many different jobs and different stages of your career). I don't know where else I would have gotten those jobs I did if it wasn't for MFJF, they opened the door into this industry for me and I feel very lucky! Recommend 100%!!!

Great resources and helpful team!

They have really great resources and helped me to get my first job on a HETV show. The 1-1 CV advice was also massively helpful! I think the site works great in conjunction with others, and is perhaps best suited for those with a few credits already, but also there are some roles for entry level crew.

How I Got My Start in The Industry

I have gotten multiple opporunities through My First Job In Film, from freelance work to work experience that led to paid jobs. Through the connections I have made from the jobs I have found through the site I am now a freelance runner with a good network of contacts in the industry and I am now finding consistent and well-paid work. I don't know what I would have done without My First Job In Film.

Great resource for those starting out

The website is very easy to use and quite intuitive. The application process in itself is made easy and straightforward, and I was able to send my application in shortly after the ad was posted. With My First Job in Film, more than all the other websites I’ve been paying for, I feel like I’m getting much more for my money’s worth.

Great for first experience.

Through MFJF I was accepted onto two Script Reading internships and my first paid PA role; after completing my education. Whilst the site isn't free like some others online, what it does provide is a collation of legitimate roles. Please understand it may take time. I can understand the frustration facing newcomers in the industry, especially when you have to pay and aren't seeing results straight away. However, what can help is applying to applicable roles (there are some roles albeit entry- still want to see you have committed some time and are serious about the industry). Whether it be amateur projects you have worked on or work experience. If you don’t have these I would suggest creating a tailor-made cv for each role you apply to and to mentioning the job specs, how you believe you can adapt to these, Or even how your experience outside the industry could be relevant. I honestly don’t think I would have made as much progress in my career without MFJF, and would highly recommend it as a tool that not only sources roles. It also has unique tools such as detailed role feedback, after the hirer has selected someone. That can help you further improve your cv moving forward and hopefully push on to gaining your first role.

Amazing experience

A great opportunity for a young filmmaker to get into the industry, even without much experience or any connections. As a student, I found the search tools very helpful as they separate full time jobs from work experiences and internships. This site helped me find a work experience of my dream, it certainly ticks all the boxes for someone who searches for a job in film.

Amazing. Cannot recommend enough

Through the site I got a script reading internship which has been amazing. I can't recommend MFJF enough as they connect entry level applicants to the employers open to training us. The main thing if that applicants can't just expect to join the site and get a job, you do have to put the work in to apply to suitable jobs, potentially writing cover letters and tailoring CVs, but if you're willing to put the work in I 100% recommend MFJF.

Good for beginner filmmaker

As a young filmmaker, I wasn't sure what the next steps were towards getting a job in the industry but when I signed up for My First Film Job I realised all the different paths I could take that were never presented to me in film school. Would recommend it, especially for work experience opportunities.

MFJF is such a beneficial site if you know how to use it

MFJF is such a beneficial site if you know how to use it and the resources it offers.

I have had several support sessions where a MFJF teammember assisted me with my script and my forward progression plan. They are all committed and incredibly helpful people.

Getting a job or an opportunity on the site, like it would with any site in this industry, did take some time, but the experience I garnered from it was incredibly beneficial and solidified my way forward in such a competitive and difficult industry.

Quite a con in my view

Quite a con in my view.
Not only does this website have a pitiful number of job listings for a paid subscription (The only way to apply for a job is to pay sub), but considering the name of the website, almost all roles are asking for experience, which defeats the purpose of the website (To find your FIRST job in film).
If you want film jobs, you join facebook (sadly) and join groups aimed at jobs in the film industry. Do not waste your time on a website like this and pay for a poor service where they clearly have a very inactive and unproductive team and their website lisitings could be rivaled by two or three free facebook groups in terms of volume of jobs out there.
Disgraceful service, over-priced for what's offered and useless to those truly wanting to find work sometime this millenium.

Edit: Yes the typical kind of response one would expect to get when called out. Except that Facebook Groups are where all the work is and the moment I discovered this, I started finding work. Your site is a con and charges people premium for nothing but words and flashy images on site.

Hi Alexander,

We’re so sorry that you haven’t enjoyed your experience with us and want to share a little more information to help in the future!

It’s true that there are a lot of free sites and facebook groups that scrape and post lots of jobs, some more genuine or helpful than others! What sets MFJF apart is we vet every opportunity and job posted on our site, so we only deal with reputable companies and productions, some of the most well known in the UK.

Our name can certainly be a little misleading. In reality, a career in film is built up over time and you will be doing lots of “first jobs” in film to build up experience, as well as understanding of your own interests and strengths within the industry. Some of our roles may require a little prior experience but all are entry level roles with many requiring no experience at all. That doesn’t mean they are easy to get though! We’ve helped so many members start incredible careers in film that it might give the impression that starting work in film is easy. It absolutely isn’t! This is a really competitive industry and it takes a lot of hard work to build a career in film.

We’re here to help you in that journey. The best help we can offer is our 1-2-1 Career Advice Service where one of our experienced Advisors will go through your CV and applications to make sure you’re on the right track. We also have unparalleled Film Industry Career Guides, and a dedicated Facebook Group where our advisors and members are always on hand to give feedback and support.

If you do ever want to try membership again please get in touch directly so we can help you take advantage of all the support we offer.

Best of luck
MFJF.

I have Never heard a successful story from this website.

Unfortunately, like many of the reviews on here, I share a similar story. I was signed up for about 5 months. Would apply to roles daily, work experience, trainee, runner jobs. Never heard back from even one application. Not a single one. Yes I know this is a competitive industry. But I've had much more luck finding jobs off Google jobs/ Facebook and actually getting interviews and Runner work with Avalon/channel 4.

DONT PAY FOR THIS SERVICE

above all I reccomend the follow: ProductionBase, Mandy and Facebook groups are great for finding local Runner work in TV for free!

To update this for the reply.

For FREE CV help - Film Access Network is incredible and follow Erin McGoff for loads of useful CV/ cover letter and email advice.

Hi Jordan,

We’re sorry to hear you’ve been unsuccessful in your search and would love to help you get more from your membership like we have for so many other members (check out www.myfirstjobinfilm.co.uk/testimonials!) .

We know it’s incredibly frustrating to spend time applying for jobs and not hear anything back. The film industry is particularly bad for it. When you apply through MFJF our team follows up with every recruiter asking for helpful feedback. We pass on all feedback we receive and work with candidates to improve their applications for similar roles.

Unlike other sites or Facebook groups, we offer 1-2-1 career advice for all PRO members, where one of our career advisors will chat with you on the phone to talk through your CV and applications. They’ll also point you towards really helpful resources in our community and keep in touch to make sure you’re on the right track as you apply to roles. We also encourage members to join our Facebook group and take advantage of the free industry reviewed career guides available on our site to help you prepare for applications and interviews.

If you get in touch with info@myfirstjobinfilm.co.uk we’d love to help you take full advantage of your membership and reap the benefits like so many of our members have. Check out www.myfirstjobinfilm.co.uk/testimonials to see what’s possible!

Avaricious, useless and taking advantage - don't!

In keeping with every review here, no sign of anything other than a money-making exercise, with no evidence of any kind of useful service to users. Cancelling on the renewal date of my subscription, MFJF responded that payment had already been taken, and the owner (and, it seems, sole staff) point blank, and repeatedly refused any kind of refund, denying any reasonable expectation to do so (or any application of the law regarding 'cooling off' periods). A useless, money-grabbing mom and pop organisation. Thrilled by the sudden appearance of positive reviews talking about using the service in the "right way", and how it's all down to the customer making an effort. Transparent, pathetic and a continuation of the same abuse of anyone unfortunate enough to come across them.

Hi,

We’re so sorry that you haven’t felt your membership was worth the investment!

Did you ever take advantage of our career advice or contact any of our team before your issue with the refund policy?

We offer all PRO Members 1-2-1 career guidance, CV advice and application reviews from a member of our team, all of whom have over 10 years experience, to help you with your career and maximise your use of our service. There is also a huge amount of free, industry led Career Guides available to all members as well as our dedicated Facebook Group where our team will always be happy to give feedback and support members.

All members are notified before any memberships are renewed and have the opportunity to cancel or pause at any time. As such we don’t offer refunds.

As you can see from our many testimonials (www.myfirstjobinfilm.co.uk/testimonials) and success stories, we really are committed to helping members launch their film careers and support them in what we all know is an incredibly competitive and challenging journey.

If you ever decide to try membership again, please get in touch directly so we can help you get the best from it. We will always be happy to help!

Hi Julia,

We absolutely understand your frustration. There’s nothing more frustrating and disappointing than not hearing back from applications, especially when you spend so long making them. The creative industries are notoriously annoying in that regard. We call it the CV Black Hole, you customise your CV and send it off hoping for a response yet hear nothing back.

What sets MFJF apart is our team contacts every recruiter asking for some helpful general feedback we can pass on to the applicants so they can improve their candidacy, sometimes the comments aren't that inspiring but we pass on everything we receive.

However, the best help we can give you is via our 1-2-1 Career Advice Service where we chat with you over the phone, talking about your CV and applications and making sure you are on the right track with everything.

If you do decide to try membership again we’d encourage you to get in touch directly so we can help and encourage you in your journey. You can also connect with other members via our website and Facebook Group for more feedback and support.

Hi. We’re so sorry to hear you’ve had a bad experience. It’s tough out there!

Not hearing back from job opportunities can be very disheartening. We actually send feedback from recruiters to applicants every day, we have a dedicated member of our team who liaises with recruiters passing on their comments.

As per our website messaging and member emails, did you user the career advice service where they review each of your applications and give you their thoughts on how to improve?

Our team can always be contacted directly and are always happy to provide 1-2-1 feedback and help you maximise your membership. Even without PRO membership you can take full advantage of our facebook group, and the wealth of career guides, templates and resources we have available free of charge on our website. All of these industry reviewed resources will help you shape your CV and applications to help you stand out.

We know it’s incredibly frustrating not to hear back from companies and even with our support sometimes companies just don’t provide feedback. However, we always ask for feedback on your behalf and pass on any we receive.

Best of luck in your search. If you ever do decide to try us again we’d be happy to help.

After 3 months of applying for jobs on this site I heard back from no one, and there is no way to follow up on an application. You can't even tell if a job posting is real, because no production title, or studio, or even a person's name is labeled on adverts.
I could have been applying for positions that didn't even exist and I'd have no way to know otherwise.

Avoid this website.

Hi Barry,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experiences using our service.

We're so sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience.
However, we'd love to address some of your concerns.

Typically we have around 100 jobs and opportunities listed on our site at any one time.

Most clearly state the recruiting organisations name. However, we do have a policy of making recruiting productions details anonymous. This is a common policy with film productions across the industry. Previously we tested displaying the name of recruiting productions but frustratingly a minority of members would chase up the production office. By the very nature of being in production, making a film, they are too busy to be receiving unsolicited calls regarding entry level work. Some understandably complained and asked us not to disclose their details. So, to ensure recruiters are happy and we have lots of jobs for our members, we have to compromise and make some names anonymous.

However, we always disclose the names of the recruiters we work with after they have finished filming. It's not ideal but it's helpful.

Here are some examples:

https://myfirstjobinfilm.com/UK/whoweworkwith

We completely understand how frustrating applying and not hearing back can be, and while we always pass on any feedback we receive, sometimes companies just don't take the time to provide any. MFJF is always happy to provide 1-2-1 feedback though and help you review and improve your CV's and applications. If you do try us again in the future drop us an email at info@myfirstjobinfilm.com and we'll be happy to support you!

Kind regards,
MFJF
