People really like to post negative…
People really like to post negative reviews, and I am sure there can be some validity to them and sometimes not as we dont know all of the reasons and they might not either. But for me, granted they had some rate increase the past year and a half like everyone, but 2025 Jan 20th on the home and Feb 1st on the auto no rate increases in Michigan, which is awesome. And the times I have had claims, they were able to be dealt with online and via the phone.
I wish I could give zero stars…
I wish I could give zero stars to Safeco Insurance. We moved to Texas three years ago and were referred to a local Safeco insurance agent through our realtor. Initially, we paid nearly $3,900 a year for home insurance in 2023. In 2024, Safeco jacked up our rate to $5,050, which somehow missed our notice. And now, starting 2025, with **no claims whatsoever**, they raised our homeowners insurance to over **$8,600**!
We were absolutely shocked by this outrageous increase. I spent all day yesterday shopping for new insurance and shared our story with other agents, all of whom were equally appalled. Thankfully, we switched to Geico, which brought our homeowners insurance down to $3,570 per year—less than half of Safeco’s new rate! To top it off, they lowered our car insurance (also with Safeco) from $3,000 to just $1,400 annually.
Safeco's pricing practices are simply unacceptable. If you’re considering them, **think twice**. There are far better options out there that won’t gouge you with massive, unexplained rate hikes.
Terrible terrible company
They delayed and delayed making payment to a body shop for a repair that was minimal Making me wait 5 weeks to get my vehicle back. I informed them that I would be out of town on a certain day due to a medical condition and I could not cancel the appointment that took me months to get. As luck would have it, the vehicle was ready to be picked up on the day I had to leave town and coincidentally it was the last day that they would pay for the rental. And of course, it was a Friday. The body shop is closed over the weekend. Safeco refused to cover the cost of the rental for two more days. The delays were their fault and I am stunned at the lack of compassion this company has. They demanded they I pick the vehicle up or I would be charged for the rental. Furthermore they notified me in the middle of the day that the vehicle would be ready that day. I was already en route to my appointment. I’m going to cancel my auto and homeowners insurance first thing. This company is awful
My Safeco account was hacked
Got in an accident. The worst part is that "someone" (ahem, the other party) conveniently hacked the Safeco website and back-end system by using the information they obtained at the scene when we publicly traded our insurance and driver's license. They then used my info to "create" a new account emailing himself a new log-in, logged into my account and took ALL of my data including my policy limits and then got an attorney and tried to SUE for more. It was difficult to get Safeco to admit that they allowed someone to bypass any security questions I had set up, and use just my policy # and other public info to obtain access to my account. To support THEMSELVES as a company, the DID use the "hacking" evidence to successfully only pay the other party $5k, which means they didn't get away with that much in "fraud" however, what completely sucks is that the didn't support ME, their client, and didn't want to fess up that they had been hacked.
Finally, they canceled my homeowners policy without notifying me, and I only found out because I called about my auto accident only to be told that my auto policy would also not be renewed due to the fact that Liberty Mutual and SafeCo no longer want to operate in the state of California. Insurance fraud costs ALL of us more in premiums. They KNEW I was hacked and admitted that it was probably an insurance scam, and THEY PAID IT ANYWAY. Unreal.
Safeco Ghosted Us When We Submitted A Claim
We discovered a water leak on September 9, 2024, resulting in severe mold in our kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. We have Extended Replacement Cost Coverage. Safeco sent 3 different people out to quote mold remediation. They did not remove the mold until November 11, 2024 because they didn't like any of the quotes from the people they sent out. My family had to breathe in black mold for 2 months. Everyone was sick in this timeframe with respiratory issues. Safeco would not pay for fans to dry anything out. We now have had the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room ripped out from the mold remediation - meaning they are not useable. We are a family of 6 without laundry and kitchen facilities since November 11th. Safeco will not return our calls or emails to order the materials needed to repair and begin the restoration work. We are now headed into the holidays and have no way to cook. Several of the materials we need to restore the demo have lead times of 4+ months. They have provided zero guidance on what's reimbursable and what they are going to pay for. There is zero communication, despite my husband and I phoning and emailing every single day.
I got a notice letter of non-renewal…
I got a notice letter of non-renewal from Safeco for my Safeco investment property insurance. I wanted to talk with Safeco to get more detailed photos of their claim. I called Safeco customer service and after 30 min of dialing through their phone system nearly trying every possible combination - I finally got a human! Who subsequently told me to contact my agent!
Safeco's customer service number is completely useless. It is obvious they don't care about their customers and just waste your time. And by the looks of things, they set standards higher than what is industry norm. Their rates may be low but good luck if you have any claims or try to reach customer service ! ! !
Worst Insurance Ever!
Check your computer! My agent and I have called over 15x each, all because your company could not collaborate with Key Bank to get my home insurance payment that is taken out of our mortgage received by your billing dept.
Not one person there in your customer service department took any accountabilty for ongoing comedy of errors and fixed the internal problem, instead you blame me. As if that wasn't enough, you are now threatening collections even though none of which happened with your account payable dept was our fault.
You will see many more negative reviews from me, so get use to it!
Beware Safeco Elderly Policyholders!
Safeco canceled my nearly 80 year old mother’s policy after she paid her premiums on time for many years. They flew a drone over her house citing mold on her roof which has never been substantiated. They did not allow her any reasonable means for remediation over this alleged issue. Instead, they targeted my elderly mother for other supposed violations. This included making accusations that her jacuzzi was empty of water and falling apart. Not true! Safeco also said her deductible would jump from $500 to $7000 which is price gouging if these issues were “resolved.” How can my 80 year old mother afford this price increase? Please do not use Cynthia C. in Orange as an agent. She is condescending and will treat you like an infant
Poor customer service
Poor customer service. I been a loyal customer for over 20 years. Not only did they raise my premiums almost 30% for no reason on my part they would not assist me in cancelling my policy as they kept stating only my agent could do it. I also explained to Safeco Insurance via telephone that my agent failed to process my insurance requests in a timely manner over the past year and I needed to do follow up. In addition, my agent has not returned my call as promised since August 5. I informed Safeco Insurance that my agent’s customer service has been poor lately and I do not believe my written request will be handled and processed. Still Safeco Insurance refused to assist me directly.
Don't buy your insurance through Agent Trieu Tod Ta
I've been a customer for +10 years, bought my insurance through with Agent - Trieu Tod Ta, the customer service has been good until recently when I had to cancel my policy. I had to call a total of 15 times from July 24 until July 31 just to close my account ! Tod's employees were passing the work around, kept telling me to call back and that they will take care of it but they never did! And since they canceled my policy @5pm on July 31, the effective date was dragged to August 1st which then made me pay for that extra day. I reached out to get this issue resolved but they refused to acknowledge it, never apologized and now not responding to both my emails and my phone calls. Until now, I'm still fighting to get my money back; if you don't want to go through this whole experience, at least go to a different agent !
Great customer support
I didn't need to use my policy in the years that I had it, but they were very easy to communicate with from start to finish. Just cancelled, but I would absolutely consider going back with them if I needed to extend my policies beyond the insurer that I've consolidated them on.
Unnotified Auto Insurance Increase and Poor Customer Service give zero rating
I want to give zero rating. These people, without informing me, increased my auto insurance. I dropped an email and called, but different agents would pick up the call and say they would pass it along, but they did not do so. Safeco is not a reliable insurance company. Please be aware of this.
Unable to do anything on line
Unable to do anything on line. Options to change my address was there but when I tried I got a page telling me this is "coming soon" and could only be done by calling my agent. Can't reach anyone and can't do anything online. Ended up cancelling the policy (through an agent even though I paid Safeco directly).
I tried to leave 0 stars but couldn't
I tried to leave 0 stars but couldn't. That's how bad my experience has been. I am typically not one to have complaints about companies as I try to be as understanding and easygoing as possible. However, I have never dealt with an auto insurance company not being diligent in assisting with a claim and not properly corresponding with the involved parties even after multiple outreach efforts.
If I detailed the entire account, this review would be the length of a short novel, so I'll try to keep it as brief as possible but detailed enough for someone to know never to choose them as an auto insurer.
I was in an accident on 6/24 and have been trying to get a situation between the rental company and Safeco resolved since July 2nd, but I still have not succeeded, as they are not very responsive or helpful. The attitude toward my attempts to contact them and resolve this issue has been very poor. I have paid out of pocket for a rental due to the safety concerns and the inability to drive my vehicle and was told that I would not be reimbursed. This was after my calls, texts, or emails went unanswered, and they were also unwilling to speak with the body shop about the necessary repairs.
Upon the initial incident, my vehicle was drivable, but the sensors weren't working properly. On 6/25, the day following the accident, I took my vehicle to the body shop to have it inspected. When I got there, I had to forward the estimate to them myself as Safeco had not done so. At the body shop, I was incorrectly informed that I could not leave my vehicle there. When I left, I went to Enterprise because Safeco had set up a rental reservation for me through the app to pick up a car that day. My sister was with me so that she could drive my truck home, and I could drive the rental.
On 6/28, I received a call from my new adjuster about returning the rental to Enterprise since my vehicle was marked as 'drivable.' She mentioned that I should have received an email and a call about this, which I did not. I informed her that I was on my way out of town and could not return the rental by 6 pm as requested. After checking, she found that they had my email address incorrect in their system and that indeed no one had contacted me. She managed to extend the rental to 7/1. When I later checked my vehicle, the sensors would not stop detecting vehicles, which sometimes caused the brakes to engage automatically. This was a safety concern, and I didn't want to risk another accident. On 7/1, I relayed this to my adjuster and was told to contact the body shop for a new estimate. Why I had to do this, I don't know. The body shop attempted to contact my adjuster directly but were unsuccessful. When I relayed this to my adjuster, her response was dismissive.
I have had to initiate all contact to resolve issues after the initial notification of my adjuster change. I am a customer, not an employee of Safeco, and am unfamiliar with their process. It is their responsibility to assist customers with such matters. My vehicle is now at the body shop, and they have still not set up the rental to avoid charges to my card. This has been the worst experience I have ever had with an auto insurer, compounded by the frustration of receiving little support from an insurer I pay every month.
Raised Coverages without authorization
Raised my coverages and, consequently, my premium from $2919 to $4682. Never signed off on the coverage increases.
Similar to past complaints - Claim
Similar to past complaints, if you have a claim, they will find something to mark down the amount for. Had a hail storm but only 1/2 of the garage had hail damage the other half was the result of 'wear and tear'. Pictures clearly show mail pock marks. Pointed out how they are covering hail damaged downspout on the north side of garage, but not roof on the same side. Guess the hail storm only picked on the downspout. Now they want a claim appraisal process which will cost them and me more than the additional amount to just replace the roof on that side of the garage. Think triple and quadruple before purchasing insurance from this carrier.
If I could give ZERO stars I would…
If I could give ZERO stars I would worst customer service ever. Dropped me without any notification at all.
The did not send FS1 to Raleigh NC. My tags got canceled because of SAFECO even though my premium had been paid. I always paid my premium. They had my Title number wrong and refused to fix it. Also called in October of 2023 to change my address I have proof I called but, THEY DID NOT CHANGE MY ADDRESS in their system. STAY AWAY FROM SAFECO
Disappointed with company
Disappointed with company, have been with Safeco for about 15 years and have both auto and homeowners' insurance with them. I just received my new polices and there was a 30 percent increase in my homeowner's policy and a 20 percent increase in my auto policy, in all the time I have been with Safeco I have never submitted a claim against the auto or homeowners policy nor a ticket.
Refused to cancel policy on my mother in hospice
My mother had Safeco renter's insurance. Last month her health declined and is now in Hospice care. As she isn't living in the apartment anymore I wanted to cancel her service. Safeco refused, unless I show a copy of power of attorney. I don't have power of attorney. I'm stuck. They could simply verify by calling the landlord to verify the vacancy. Out of all the services (even those considerably more expensive), this is the only one that refuses to help unless I show power of attorney. Very disappointed in their inability to work with me to stop the charges.
