I used Scribbr’s proofreading/editing…
I used Scribbr’s proofreading/editing service for an academic manuscript and was deeply disappointed with the outcome.
The edited file contained systematic errors, including a critical change that should not occur in careful human editing.
Most problematic issue:
My original sentence correctly separated explanatory text from citations:
“…green water (rainfall) (Author et al., 2022; …)”
After editing, it was changed to:
“…green water (rainfall; Author et al., 2022; …)”
This merges the explanation with the citation and makes “rainfall” appear as if it were being cited as a source. Any editor carefully reading the sentence in context would recognize that “rainfall” is a basic explanatory term, not something that requires citation. This type of mechanical alteration suggests rule-based or automated processing rather than attentive, line-by-line human review.
Other recurring problems included:
Incorrect alteration of technical terminology across multiple instances
Misidentification of standard field-specific terms
Nonsensical word substitutions that changed the intended meaning
Company response:
When I raised these concerns, Scribbr:
Defended the “rainfall” change using a style rule that does not apply to this grammatical structure
Did not acknowledge the issue as an error
Did not offer a proper re-edit addressing the problem
Offered only a 20% partial refund as resolution
Bottom line:
Quality control was inadequate, and customer service focused on justification rather than correction. I ultimately spent significant time fixing errors that were introduced during editing—errors that were not present in my original manuscript.
For academic manuscripts that require careful human reading and judgment, I do not recommend this service.

Since our editors work with Track Changes rather than direct edits, you always have the agency in deciding whether to implement the recommended changes or not.
About the inclusion of the term "rainfall" in the citation parenthesis, the editor most likely suggested this change to avoid nested parentheses, which is in line with APA guidelines. Scribbr takes the money and dId not complete the job. Completely unreliable. Took $150 for citations, did not complete the task and offered "good will" to give me 10% back. Very dissapointing

Thoroughly unreliable
Scribbr advertises a free plagiarism check. I spent some time uploading my document to find that nothing of the response was visible without payment. Furthermore, it graciously informed me that my writing style is poo. Given that I got over 70% for my Masters dissertation and have worked for a whiles as a lecturer responsible for marking scripts of graduates and postgraduates, I raise my eyebrows at this.
It is thoroughly unreliable.
