Seating Matters: The Phoenix Chair
My 49-year-old sister had a debilitating stroke ten years ago, resulting in weakness/paralysis/spasticity of the left arm and leg. After a lengthy hospitalization and rehabilitation she came home and discovered she could not sleep in a regular bed or sit in a regular chair. Since this time she has spent her days and nights in various recliners. Some were purchased in regular furniture stores, others from medical supply stores supposedly offering more options (motorization, support etc.). The chairs were expensive, uncomfortable and really offered no support. One of the biggest problems was she kept ‘slipping down’ in the chair requiring caregivers to pull up 200+ pounds multiple times a day. Skin pressure issues were also developing and getting harder to manage.
We began searching for other alternatives in medical supply stores and websites. One day, an Internet search, popped up the Seating Matters website. These chairs looked like nothing I had ever seen before. I called and Stephanie and Danny listened to our needs and asked all the right questions. It was decided the PHOENIX chair would be best option and it’s been life changing for not only my sister but also for her caregivers. She is more comfortable, sleeps longer, bottom pressure has been relieved and she is more independent. The fully motorized chair allows greater comfort/mobility with the forward tilt, removable footrest and adjustable head/upper body support systems. The removable footrest allows her to push herself up in the chair and the forward tilt allows her to situate her bottom into the back of the chair when tranferring from the wheelchair, solving the slippage issues.
The PHOENIX chair arrived fully assembled in a very well packed box in perfect condition ready for immediate use. The chair is also very easy to clean, super easy to move about and we appreciate the flame-retardant cushions as my sister smokes. All adjustments to the chair are simple and can be done without tools. Danny and Stephanie at Seating Matters have been very helpful and extremely easy to reach via email/phone/text for any questions. Thank you Seating Matters!!!
