Freedom Runner by Paul Darden is an absolute gem. Perfect for middle school students and struggling high school readers, this book pulls you in from page one and doesn’t let go. Darden masterfully weaves creativity, action, and heartfelt storytelling in a way that feels both fresh and accessible for young readers.
As an educator, I’m always looking for books that hook students early — this one does exactly that. Freedom Runner is fast-paced, engaging, and full of moments that spark conversation and deeper thinking.

Freedom Runner was actually fire. I didn’t expect to get pulled in this fast, but the story grabs you right away. Duante feels real — the way he thinks, reacts, and tries to figure things out had me locked in the whole time.
The mix of modern Bronx life and time travel to the 1860s was crazy in the best way. It never got boring, and every chapter had something going on. Paul really did his thing with this one.
If you like books that are easy to read, fast-paced, and actually make you think a little, this is definitely worth the pick-up. Solid 5 stars.
