Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 131 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many consumers frequently complained about unexpected high charges, sudden price increases, and auto-renewal traps following short introductory trials. People also mentioned that canceling ongoing subscriptions was frustratingly difficult, often requiring direct phone calls during office hours because reliable digital cancellation options were completely absent. However, some customers also noted that certain support representatives were exceptionally helpful and polite when addressing difficult billing and account issues. A few reviewers reported positive final outcomes, managing to successfully secure refunds or negotiate lower renewal rates after speaking directly with customer service agents.

Near impossible to cancel, terrible customer service support

Signed up for a trial subscription, which turned to £34.99 and incredibly difficult to cancel my account. I couldn’t log in to get support, then support team couldn’t find my account. It took weeks to get my account cancelled, I’d seriously avoid it as not worth the hassle if you do want to cancel. If signing up be very aware of which account you use as they will not let you out easy or refund.

Well-documented right-wing bias

This newspaper is politically biased (it has endorsed a Conservative Party candidate in every UK election since 1945) and selectively reports stories that favor the right wing. I subscribed not knowing its political bias, but I have since unsubscribed as I do not want to support such a biased newspaper.

Telegraph Books - Don't Pay for Next Day Delivery!

I ordered a tailored book for a friend's 80th birthday. I paid extra for next day delivery. Needless to say it still hasn't arrived! So, I paid an extra £7.50 and could have got delivery for free as it still hasn't turned up!
No wonder they don't bother to reply to negative reviews - let's hope the new owners Redbird have a rather higher regard for their customers!

My Digital Re-subscription has jumped from £25 to £269. The only way to cancel appears to be having to phone their customer services.

I phoned and was lucky enough to get an operator who didn't try to flannel me.
They offered the 'special deal' of £29, but to be honest,
if they were to pay me £29, I still wouldn't take the offer, as it's a third rate paper with poor journalism.

I asked if I would receive an email confirming the cancellation, and was told that I would.

Freya was super helpful! :)

The website is MASSIVELY annoying and doesn't let you cancel your subscription easily and I didn't want to pay the £199 renewal fee, especially as my wife pays too! That said, Freya was really professional and helpful, as well as friendly, and was able to sort the cancellation out almost immediately. There was a mild sell (which is to be expected for any company), but she wasn't pushy and I left the call happy. Well done Freya! :)

Unethical

The quality of writing in The Telegraph is consistently high, particularly when it comes to the arts. Such a shame then that they have published bare-faced lies. Spent a few hours fact checking a particular news story, for my own peace of mind, only to discover that The Telegraph have indeed printed lies. To laugh or cry. A shame to ruin a reputation this way.

I paid for games

I paid for games. I was then shocked to find £269 taken from my account. I tried to have it refunded but couldn't get anywhere. I attempted speaking to their "helpful" phone staff who repeatedly told me they had no record of this money being taken by them.

Dreadful customer service....

Signed up for their "pay £39 for the year" offer but am definitely going to cancel before it renews. I didn't realise you had to sign up for the puzzles separately but they had an offer on that too so I did the "get six months free and then pay £39 per year". I would have been happy with that as I want to do the cryptic crossword every day but it does not work!!!!! I sent an email to customer services on their feedback email address after I tried to do the second day and got an email back saying they don't respond to emails and suggested, if I couldn't access the puzzles, I do loads of stuff to delete cookies, et., etc., etc. but none of it works on either my tablet or my laptop. Disgraceful service and no wonder almost all of the ratings on here are 1 star. I've put my TS number here but I bet a pound to a piece of s*** no one resonds.

Easy to sign up - not so easy to cancel

Having signed up for a subscription at full price and deciding to cancel when it no longer suited me many months later, I was surprised to have to endure a digital assault course to be able to find my way to cancelling the subscription. DT goes over and above in its methodology to make it as difficult as possible to cancel. Not only extremely cynical but totally off putting and ensures I will never take out a DT sub again.

I made the mistake of taking out a subscription, it was only about £20. Then a year later they want to renew at over £200. There is no way to cancel except ring a call centre who are difficult to understand. They try and talk you around cancelling, I had to repeat several times I wanted to cancel before they would.

I wouldn't pay anything for this newspaper subscription given that they print articles in support of a serial killer! Never again.

Same As the express paper a shameful untrustworthy rag
They put interesting stories on the media everyday then block you from reading with popups asking for money to reject harmful cookies

They have just taken £199 from my account and will not refund!!! Annual reminder email came into junk mail. They refuse to refund this is so unfair who can pay £199 for this and get away with it. What’s stopping them making it £1999? £100000? There is no limit if you don’t get a refund!!!!

My £39 annual subscription with the…

My £39 annual subscription with the Daily Telegraph is due to expire very soon, they have sent me a reminder stating that the renewal fee will be £199.
I have had very annoying experiences in the past from this company and unfortunately there is no 'cancel my account' button, instead they insist I call 03309 127113 and speak to a 'member of our friendly team'. I don't want to call them, I simply want to cancel the account.
I've spoken to their 'friendly team' in the past, trying to cancel a previous account, and was bombarded with special offers via email and requests to call them, they don't take no for an answer.
The expiring £39 subscription wasn't worth the money, I don't like paying good money to be served up with what I consider to be crude propaganda, the ranting of warmongers, vulgar jingoism and disinformation.
I have seen that others in this Trustpilot Telegraph thread have had money taken from their account - and it is difficult to get it back.
It must be against consumer law to operate in this fashion, they need to put a "I want to cancel this account immediately" box in the subscriptions section of the online 'My Account' details.
I do not have a recurring subscription and if they take this money without my agreement there will be some awkwardness to follow.

Do not be tempted to sign up for a free trial - - it is incredibly difficult to cancel, the customer service staff are atrocious and you will end up both extremely frustrated and significantly out of pocket.

The level of complexity associated with the cancellation process is such that TMG appear to be actively trying to make it as difficult as possible to walk away. Borderline scam operation.
