We were railroaded and lied to by staff
Organised a carpet to be fitted on the 20th May at the end of April. Was told that there was plenty of carpet to cover hall landing and stairs. On the fitting day 20th May the fitter came and said there was not enough carpet. Why not go to store to select another bigger piece. He said he could cut the carpet on the morning of the 21st and fit it that day. My wife did go down to the store and chose a carpet a lot more expensive than previous carpet which was £109 it was now £250 the fitter had mentioned on the 20th that we might as well get new underlay. It would be free fitting the cheapest underlay they said was also £250 (for 7mm thick cheap and nasty underlay which had to be the same dimensions as the carpet - they charged for 22.8 m2 for it but since we were buying underlay it would be free fitting saving us a cost of £113. When I got home and my wife showed me the invoice did not look right so I phoned the store at approx 5pm and spoke to the guy who served my wife. I questioned the figures he said he could not do a proper invoice. I then questioned the cost of the underlay. He said that the fitter would only fit carpets with their companies underlay. I questioned that and asked if he could check that with the fitter. He Said he would and phone me back. At 5.30pm I got a message on my answer machine that the store closed at 5.30pm and that he would get back to me at 8.30am when the store opened. My wife and I had a discussion that evening and decided to keep the first carpet, keep the better underlay which was already on the stairs and just pay for 6m2 underlay in the hall and have the carpet fitted just on the hall and stairs (we would paint the floorboards on the landing and use a rug.) At 8.30am I arrived at the store. The assistant was already at the store together with a mystery person up stairs. As I explained to the assistant what we decided the mystery person came down a back stairway and said see you later to assistant. At this point the assistant said to me that the problem with our decision was that the carpet my wife had chosen the day before had already been cut by the fitter that same afternoon. He took me upstairs (Where the mystery person had been) and showed me it was cut up. It was now impossible for us to change our minds. I was taken aback. I said I was not happy with the price and quality of the underlay. I said I wanted the fitter just to fit the carpet without underlay. He said that his fitter could not do this as it was a hessian backed carpet and would not be safe. I explained that we would buy our own underlay and fit this ourselves - the difficult area (the stairs) had quality underlay already in place. Again he said the fitter could not do this. At this time it was 9am. I asked what time the fitter would arrive at the store The assistant apparently spoke to him said 10am. This was the time that the fitter had told me he would get to the store to cut the carpet and then come to us afterwards the day before when he left us. We wanted the carpet fitting it had been too long for us without proper carpet (I tried to get hold of our own underlay which would have cost around £70 max - it was all delivery the next day so I could not have it straight away. We had waited nearly a month to get the carpet fitted from first visit so we reluctantly decided to go ahead with the fitting using their underlay.
What we got was a carpet which fitted hall stairs and landing - which looked to me dubious quality. Very expensive cheap underlay. Fitted at a total cost of £517.00 including door plates.
What we wanted was a good quality wool carpet we had previously chosen which cost £109 say with a cost of £40 for the required better quality underlay and say £80 for fitting hall and stairs say a total cost of £230.
( After the comments of the original salesman for all we know the first piece of carpet could have fit all.)
Customers should be aware of the practices of this store. We have learned a big lesson and will not be using United Carpets Again.

Our team worked very hard with you to resolve the issues with your order so it is disappointing to see that you were not satisfied with their efforts. In this instance our team went to extensive lengths to ensure that your carpet was fitted to a high standard and in a timely manner.
So I'd like to take this opportunity to clarify a couple of the points you raised regarding your purchase;
You initially purchased the first piece of carpet with us in 2019, but asked us to delay fitting until you were ready (due to some personal circumstances). We were happy to store your carpet in our warehouse until you were ready to complete. We stored your initial carpet for over 4 years.
When you made this initial purchase in 2019 it was for carpet only (no underlay, as you stated you already had this down) to cover a stairs and landing (no hallway).
When you came back in to us to have this piece of carpet fitted there were no changes to your requirements (a hallway was not added), and fitting was arranged for the next available slot.
When the independent fitter arrived at your home you then told them that you wanted the hallway carpeting too. It was explained to you at that point that the carpet you previously purchased was big enough to cover the stair and landing, but not the addition of the hallway. You did not have enough of the carpet to cover the extra ground. There was also no underlay present on the upstairs landing or hallway. The type of carpet you selected does require underlay so the fitter was unable to fit it at that time. The fitter suggested that you contact the store.
The same day your partner came into store, selected a new Wool carpet to cover the hallway, stairs and landing. This carpet also requires underlay so she purchased the underlay too, which meant you could take advantage of the free fitting (when you buy the same size underlay) offer we have.
Our team then managed to get you a second fitting date for the following day, and all the arrangements were made, including the carpet being cut in preparation for fitting the following day.
As a gesture of good-will they also deducted the cost of the original carpet that they had stored for 4 years from your total.
You then contacted the store and queried the cost, the validity of the invoice you were given and the need for underlay with your chosen carpet. The team answered all of your queries and as a further gesture of goodwill, to ensure you have a good experience with us gave you door bars and grippers (which had not been ordered) at no extra charge.
You confirmed that you were happy with that resolution, and your fitting took place the following day.
As I stated previously, our team take great pride in ensuring that every customer has a good experience with us. And whilst it is always disappointing to receive a 1 star review, on this occasion we do feel that we went above and beyond to accommodate your needs.

Repeat customer - still happy
Have used United for carpets many times and always happy to go back. Always a good choice of roll ends to suit my needs. Fitters arrived when they said they would and did a quick and tidy job of my stairs and landing.

Wrong carpet fitted
Wrong carpet fitted. Had to wait longer unitil they sourced the actual carpet and got a new fitter. Lots of mess left behind took a few skip runs to clear it up, skirting boards scuffed. Was told we would receive some money back for the inconvenience but have heard nothing since.
