About Vets Now

Pet emergencies can happen at any time – including when your regular vet is closed.

That’s why our nationwide network of out-of-hours pet emergency clinics are open through the night, at weekends and on bank holidays, so we’re ready and waiting to provide expert pet emergency care when your regular vet is having some time off.

Our pet emergency clinics are the pet equivalent of A&E and our purpose is to give you and your pet the care and support you deserve, at the time you need it most, whether it’s four in the morning or in the middle of Sunday lunch.

Vets Now provides this trusted service to more than 1000 veterinary practices across the UK — from over 60 dedicated out-of-hours clinics and two 24/7 pet emergency hospitals. In total, we treat around 200,000 small animals every year — our highly-skilled team works hard throughout the night, weekends and Bank Holidays. So whether you’re in Aberdeen, Belfast or Portsmouth we’re there for you and your pet when you need us most.

We’ve also pioneered other ways to help pets, pet owners and the veterinary profession, such as our comprehensive referrals service and providing our staff with industry-leading training and development opportunities. We also support the pet blood transfusion charity, Pet Blood Bank UK. Meanwhile, our two hospitals — in Glasgow and Manchester — are home to some of the UK’s leading specialists in the field of emergency and critical care and provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Zero compassion or care

Zero compassion or care towards a stray elderly distressed cat, in serious need of nutrition and flea treatment. We were the only customers there but clearly helping the cat wasn’t a sufficient priority. Absolutely disgusted with the attitude of their staff who were happy to just leave it in that state. It’s animal cruelty. Clearly all they care about is money.

Some lack of understanding and compassion

I wasn't impressed with how the vet I saw was talking, there was a few swear words given in regards to her own animal and there was a lot of slouching when sat talking to me in the waiting area, mostly seemed unprofessional. There was a fair bit of information given about my animals issues and I appreciate it fully but she wouldn't help me with what I wanted as it was unethical HOWEVER the next day I went to another vets and what I wanted got done. I was told it wasn't unethical given all the reasons I explained and I had explained the night before. I got told the medication my animal could have was a popular one and it wasn't in stock? That don't really make sense. If it's a popular medication you'd get enough of it in stock surely? It was out of hours. The receptionist was lovely, I will be honest she was much more helpful and gave me a lot of advice on how to manage things but also understood why I wanted what I wanted. Over all I really wasn't impressed with the vet I dealt with that day.

I can’t fault the lovely vet that we saw and how quickly we were seen.

However. The fees are astronomical - and if it hadn’t been so close to payday - there’s no way I could have afforded the £359 for the visit.
We were there less than 10 minutes - nothing more than a temperature check, checked his gums, felt his tummy. Nothing more.
I was charged £22 for 20mg of omeprazole (you can buy 560mg for £15 in a pharmacy - so I’d like to hear the justification for that.
I was also charged £1 for a charity contribution- I’ve no problem donating to charities- but without asking me first I feel like that’s just theft.

I would be really interested in seeing a cost breakdown for why OOH vets are so much more expensive than a normal vet appointment. I understand that there’s the additional cost of electricity to the building and the wages of the vet themselves - but roughly £250 per person through the door above what would be paid during the week seems far above the additional cost to the veterinary practice.

It’s sad that these sorts of costs will prevent people from owning pets or from seeking medical assistance.

Hi Dawn, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We appreciate your feedback about the cost of our service. Very attentive and thorough. Peace of mind, however costly for the consultation when you consider that you can have a private GP consultation for a third of the price for a human. £309 for a vet consultation when you can pay £100 at the One Hospital for a GP consultation!

Absolutely negligent and terrible service

A kitten has been brought for an emergency appointment as she didn't pass feacees for close to 4 days. Our regular vet suggested a potential foreign body and exploratory surgery being needed. (A shadow was visible on the ultrasound but our vet couldn't operate on that date as we had an appointment 30 minutes before their weekend closure)

After examination at vets now in Ashford, I was told that "there was no justification for the surgery being done or even any further tests to be performed" as the cat wasn't showing any signs of being in pain. Even after I showed the pictures of ultrasound and provided all kitty's blood work.

Cat was given an enema and did pass feacees around hour later.

As it turned out cat did indeed have a foreign body in her intestines which 2 other vets could feel with their fingers. She needed an urgent (and much more costly than it would normally be) surgery which was the only option apart from putting her down.

So ultimately £400 appointment for a 1 tube of enema that costs £20 for box of 12 and zero actual diagnosis or care.

Please avoid if you can.

Also posted same review in Google which only appears if I look at reviews from my own account

My dog started drooling excessively so called vets now to be quoted £309 just for an out of hours (daytime) consultation - thankfully it’s a broken tooth and nothing serious but how on earth can they justify such an obscene amount??? Pure greed - Avoid!!!!

02.04.24 -Thanks for the automated waste of time reply - it was cheaper to call out an Equine vet on Christmas day - and they attended the customer location - you are putting the welfare of animals at risk due to your excessive and quite frankly greedy profits

Hi Sean, thanks for your feedback on the cost of our service. As you may be aware, it’s a lot more expensive to run an after-hours emergency vet service. Had to phone out of hours as my GSD was vomiting a lot. Person answering was very understanding & helpful. Had to ring again later & spoke to vet who was amazing. He had to go & see her in the end & my husband said she was so helpful & kind as our GSD is totally blind. She rang me to give me the results & I couldn’t have been happier with the way she explained everything. Can’t thank them enough.
