The car broke down and ECH (the Italian Hire company) left us stranded
The car broke down and the Italian Hire company was ECH, all of which was booked through Zest. ECH treated us terribly. I have checked today by setting up a further quote on the Zest website, who should come up first with car quotes but ECH! How can Zest still be engaging with ECH based upon our known personal experience and all the negative feedback you can see on line about ECH. ECH never offered any arrangement in relation to the breakdown except for a local recovery company to collect the car. The recovery company were going to leave us at the side of the road but in the end they took us to their depot and booked a taxi for us. We ended up out of pocket and although Zest tried, they were totally ineffective in getting our travel costs (incurred back to the point of hire at the airport), from ECH. Also having taken out the excess protection through Zest I thought we were financially protected. This has now proved not to be the case as their insurers (Riverside Underwriting Ltd) have declined to pay any of my small claim at all [Their final letter received by me 12 August 2026!
Zests' staff were reassuring and quite charming whilst we were having problems with ECH whilst we were in Italy but sadly ineffective in dealing with our small claim against the car hire company when we got back to the UK. We're we told verbally by Zest that ECH would not pay the taxi fare because we had not used their approved taxi company. ECH never told us at any stage how their recovery process operated. Regrettably not sure I see any future benefit in using Zest as brokers for car hire, UK or overseas based upon my personal experience.

When a breakdown occurs, roadside support and transport arrangements must follow the local provider's official breakdown procedure. ECH confirmed that complimentary transport was available through their dedicated line; however, because transport was arranged independently via the local recovery driver instead of through the designated channel, ECH declined to reimburse those third-party costs.
Our team raised this with management at ECH to advocate on your behalf, but they have maintained their position in line with their operational terms. Regarding your claim with Riverside Underwriting Ltd, Excess Reimbursement policies are designed specifically to cover vehicle damage or theft excess. As the underwriters confirmed, costs such as taxi fares, unused rental days, and fuel fall outside the scope of excess protection, which is why the claim was declined.
We continuously review provider feedback to ensure standards are maintained, and your comments have been noted internally.

I would definitely recommend Zest car…
I am happy to recommend Zest car rental. They were very straightforward to deal with over the hire of a car for a weeks holiday in the Algarve. The booking process was very easy to navigate and everything was clearly set out in a transparent way. The pickup and drop off again was very straightforward and the agent's handling the process were both courteous and helpful.

Peace of mind about excesses
Peace of mind about excesses. I always use Zest. The one time I didn’t I got stung by a rogue rental company in Italy. Thankfully I took out separate excess cover. With Zest you don’t have to.

Brilliant company easy to use and good
I don’t usually review but have used Zest for years (and don’t use anyone else) because they include second driver as standard, and good insurance. Tons of criteria to search for a car eg pick up airport/ off site, Customer help is excellent- had to change lead driver this year and was done easily.

Would use Zest and Guerin again but Zest recommended supplier Masterking at Faro, not so much…
We made 2 bookings for 2 cars at Faro airport in Portugal through Zest car rental. The whole booking experience with Zest was easy, communication was very good and we would definitely use them again for booking hire cars.
The 9 seater people carrier was supplied through Guerin which was recommended by Zest for Faro airport and everything about the pick up/drop off experience was good. However, Masterking, the supplier for the medium car we wanted, was not so good despite having a recommended supplier rating by Zest. Pick up point was sited a distance away from arrivals, desk was chaotic and the car that we rented experienced a mechanical failure on the way back to Faro airport causing us a lot of stress. Zest maybe need to check out other reviews for Masterking before recommending them on their site.
