As a busy attorney with an active practice, my staff reached-out to courtrec for a one-time record search in late 2024. An explicit one-time search. But courtrec continued to charge me $20 for the subsequent 17 months, an additional $340 total. Yes, I should have been monitoring my account more carefully. But it was an explicit one-time search.
When the overcharge was discovered, I encountered the courtrec policy of “refunds of a maximum of 12 months only” ($240).
The $100 loss is not a fortune, but my office relied on the legitimacy and professionalism of courtrec. We were misled. Proceed with caution.
Update on 3/17/26: heard from courtrec, see below. They are still refusing to issue a full refund of $340. Their 12-month rule seems like a rather transparent method of limiting their liability when they plan to overcharge. Quite the business model.
