Descript is an AI-powered video and audio editing platform that combines transcription, screen recording, and publishing into a single tool. Instead of using multiple apps for editing, captioning, and sharing, users can manage the entire workflow in one place. At its foundation, Descript allows text-based editing. Media files are automatically transcribed, and changes to the text directly edit the video or audio timeline. This makes editing more accessible for beginners while still providing advanced capabilities for professionals. Core Features Text-based editing: Edit media by editing words on a transcript instead of navigating timelines. Screen and webcam recording: Capture product demos, tutorials, and presentations in one place. AI enhancements: Tools like Eye Contact, Studio Sound, filler word removal, and automatic captions. Avatars & voice tools: Create lifelike avatars, translate content, or generate synthetic voices. Collaboration tools: Multi-track editing and real-time team collaboration for distributed teams.

Too many bad reviews
Wow! Thanks to Trustpilot I have saved a lot of money. It was Descript v Apple’s Creative Studio. I decided on Descript because I’m a beginner. As one last check, I looked here on Trustpilot and found these awful reviews. Descript, what have you done?
not really usable
not really usable. doesnt do reliably enough what it promises to do.
Descript is my far the worst video platform ever
Descript is my far the worst video editing software I’ve used. You upload an audio, and can’t generate captions from that audio… what’s the point? So unintuitive, awful to use. I can’t believe they have any sort of business still. Shocking platform. Complete waste of money I would not recommend anyone use their tools.
i swear this is a total scam
i swear this is a total scam. ive used a few times now and its really useless. you pay and pay to get credits, give specific details for the underlord and it has either lost my projects, or not listened to what ive asked. its a massive let down and the credits have been non refundable. i would never ever recommend to anyone. save your money. use another site.
Changing your email on Descript: harder than assembling IKEA furniture blindfolded
We’ve been waiting THREE DAYS for support just to change an email address. It’s 2026 and there’s no button for it in the dashboard. Instead, their solution? Buy an extra seat at double the price — which will be refunded “later.” To. Change. My. Email.
That’s like being told to buy a second car just to swap the license plate on your first one.
My grandma changes her email on Facebook in 4 seconds. Descript needs a support ticket, three business days, and a financing round. Embarrassing for an AI company in 2026.
Not for people serious about content creation
Really unintuitive. Tries to sell you on a larger program immediately. Just feels like another AI tool that isn't quite there technologically,
They are mid at best
It "got the job done" for the few months of using it. Since using them I have created over 100 shorts and 18 long form videos. So I have used them enough to know the quality of their software. But the glitches, and errors on uploading, and exporting issues, is a pain in the ass. I have reached out multiple times, and their support is lackluster in the sense that they don't really enquire deeply on your concerns. After my subscription ends I will never go back to use them again. And underlord and B-Roll assist is a poor AI assistant. Truly would say 3/10 here.
Lost Edits, Unclear Answers, and a Refund Framed as a “Courtesy”
We had a very frustrating experience with Descript and their support.
We used Descript to record and edit several videos. The edits were done around May, mainly using the web app. When we opened those same projects in December, many of them looked like raw recordings again. Cuts were missing and effects were missing.
Support and engineering told us they checked their logs and only saw “creation → recording → transcription,” and they said they could not find proof the edits were ever made. That explanation does not match what we saw in the app. The affected videos show two project backup files. In Descript, backups only appear after you start editing (the app even says so). But when we checked other projects that we know are raw, those do not show any backup files. We asked a simple question: if backups appear only after editing, why do the “raw” affected videos have two backups while truly raw videos have none? They did not answer this clearly.
One rep also said they noticed a spike in network errors in May. That is exactly when the edits were done, which makes it very likely the edits did not save or sync correctly. Instead of admitting this could be the cause, support kept pointing to “no logs of edits” and that it was our fault.
They refunded one month, but called it a “courtesy.” That was disappointing. We also stopped using Descript while they were investigating because we did not feel it was safe to keep working in the platform. If that one-month refund was meant to cover the time we could not use the service during the investigation, that still does not address the real damage. We lost many hours of work, we paid our editor hourly, and we paid for the subscription for convenience and reliability. For the amount of inconvenience and loss we experienced, one month is clearly not enough.
The latest update has been terrible
The latest update has been terrible. The templates are not the same and no longer have the features I need. The previous version was exactly what I needed this software to be. This is another example of over-innovation. I will be canceling my subscription soon if they don't revert some of the features that I'm sure nobody was complaining about.
They stole our money and refused to refund it when we caught them
This company is a total scam. My wife never even signed up for the service and was somehow enrolled in a paid plan back in August 2024. We didnt notice the charges on our credit card until recently (2 young kids and busy lives) but sure enough we were getting charged $20/month for the last 18 months! Not one single email or text invoice or account opening confirmation. how shady is that! And then when I wrote to them to explain the situation they just said "sorry, nothing we can do." They took almost $400 from us, we never even touched the service, because we had no idea we were signed up for it, and now they refuse to reimburse us. Real great way to do business! They're just ripoff artists! Stay away from them!
Descript is a complete RIP OFF
Descript is a complete RIP OFF! I paid $40 for the Creator plan. Started in one just one 15 minute video for editing. I can't finish the editing because I am out of AI credits already! I then topped up for another $40 to finish. And within just a few minutes, I am out of AI credits again!! Everything in the editor requires AI credits. I am NOT paying anymore to edit with descript! F these guys!
Unprofessional
Unprofessional, unsupportive and would not recommend to anyone
Questionable and shady promotion practices
I was starting with my creators' setup and wanted to install DaVinci Resolve, and when I wrote this in the search box of Google, what did I get - DaVinci Resolve (title), and then the meta description with smaller font: "AI Video Editing Software — DaVinci resolve There's a reason people are switching to Descript."
Wow, just wow. I didn't look, in my eagerness to start, and clicked, signed up with my email, and when it led me to a PRICING plan, I realised my mistake.
I have no idea how Google allows such shady promotional practices, but my advice to Descript is to ditch it immediately, because they will get more hate instead of more money and clients.
Here I am now, knowing I will never use software by such a company, because they use their competitor's brand to boost themselves and purpusfully mislead people.
I've been a long time user & here's my take
I'm a long time user and fan of Descript. I've been paying $30/mo for almost 4 years now. Until recently, I was able to efficiently run my channel, making 3-4 videos per week. Now, I can only create 3-4 videos a MONTH without being prompted to "top up." They've divided usage into "AI " and "Media Minutes", hit the max for either one and you're done for the billing period without purchasing a "top up." The media minutes are counted by your uploads, not the end product. And each track counts separately, so a 1 hour raw video with 3 tracks (video and 2 audio) uses 3 hours of media minutes. I can't speak for all small creators but I know I'm looking for a solution that doesn't meter my uploads or grossly markup API costs to make a bigger profit (we know what it costs, you aren't fooling us).
Weird results
I was invited to a podcast and a podcast host used Descript eye tracking feature and some editing. It made me look weird, almost as if I was under the influence and the video was weirdly blurred. My eyes were the worst. I had to ask the host to remove the podcast as I was ashamed of looking like a bad deepfake. Beware if you appear on podcasts. Ask the host for preview before it goes live.

“Extremely unstable and not usable in practice”
I used Descript to edit short reels, but even with clips under one minute the app was slow, unstable, and kept crashing. Productive work was impossible.
After cancelling the subscription, they continued charging my card. Support does not respond. Overall, the tool was neither technically nor organizationally reliable. Not recommended for professional use.

Hindered my progress today as an entrepreneur and was unable to get the conversion I needed. I paid $25 for 400 credits. For a simple 45s video, it 1) did not produce what I asked even though I specified it clearly, 2) At a certain point was running for 15+ minutes doing nothing; I canceled the call and asked what happened, Descript replied that there was a glitch and that it would try again. 3) It tries again, but now all the credits were wasted when it glitched out. Contact CS same day early, no reply yet.

it doesnt work and you cant get a refund even if cancelled first 2 days
Very nice.
Very nice, it did exactly what I asked it to do (joining two videos together/gluing them) and I somehow did not find my voice terrible when hearing the final video.
I hate this tool
I have this tool. It is a piece of shit. So buggy. Don't buy!!!!
