The hire car was badly damaged when I picked it up. I didn't expect this much external damage with Europcar. This hire cost €35 per day (we did not buy extra insurance) with unlimited mileage.

caution Careful with the insurance
Careful with the insurance, and when you receive the car. I had premium insurance, and when I received the car, I did not check the back seats, which had a tear, and they had charged me 500€. Not happy at all with the service at Barcelona Airport. Be cautious with this company, as full insurance or premium coverage is not guaranteed, and you must inspect the car before they hand it over to you. This seems like a low-cost company, and you pay for the service of a premium. The total cost for one week was over € 2,000...
Charged 200€ for nothing
UPDATE: changing to 3 stars as i got refunded
Charged for something that was not in the car (under the trunk) for 200 euros. Employees at place of return stated they will include a note but nothing was done. Customer service is a nightmare to work with. Lost 200 euros because i did not buy insurance and did not dig under the trunk. Joke of a company
The company scams me for preexisting…
The company scams me for preexisting scratch. I have no accident or scratches during the rental. When returning the car, they put the car under microscope and said there is a tiny scratch on the bumper. I am pretty sure that was preexisting. They charged me 100 euro for it. Although my credit card covers it, I don’t like the way they do business. Will not rent from them again
Wants ekstra money
We rented a car a palma de mallorca airport. It took a very long time until it was our turn. When we finally came to the counter, the man who worked there, needed a lot of information and wanted to sell me a bigger car. When I finally had to pay, my creditcard wasen't good enough, so I had to pay for insurance again (I already had pay through booking.com). We could hear that people around us was frustrated too.
Not transparent pricing and terrible experience
We booked car for 36 eur online and when we went to pick it up due to hidden fees and taxes prices jumped to almost 100 eur.
Lady from car rental told us we were supposed to read terms and conditions document online.
To sum it up price communicated during booking was a lie and company bets on customers to be in hurry and are ok with added fees as they cant cancel.
Europcar in Girona
Europcar in Girona, Spain charged me €105 basic for rental and €145.20 to upgrade to an Audi A3. A total of €486.90 for four days! and (wait for it!) insurance of €174.14 for four days "premium protection". They spend an hour filling out documents and asked for my passport three times. Avoid them. They are very expensive insurance costs considering they hold €800 on my credit card for damage to vehicle. Try the much cheaper options instead of Europcar.
Not recommended
Not recommended. I booked a premium car online, but when I arrived, they refused to give it to me because I only had a debit card, even though I could’ve paid the full deposit with it. Instead, they gave me a cheaper car and added extra services I didn’t need, like premium insurance, without clearly informing me — probably because I don’t speak the local language well. In the end, I got a worse car but paid nearly double what I expected.
Too few staff and not very helpful
The time taken to be served at pickup was outrageous, over 40mins to be served.
The vehicle was lovely however I need to booked a larger vehicle to take all the luggage we had, when I asked about leaving seats from the vehicle to help accommodate the luggage it was refused, this meant we had to travel with luggage on peoples laps.
The return process took too long due to insufficient staff to cope with the returns coming in.
Seemed like everyone was too busy/short staffed.
Needs more staff and better collection service
I had a very frustrating experience with Europcar at Fuerteventura airport. When I arrived, there was a huge queue and only one staff member working at the desk. While she was incredibly friendly and doing her best, it was obvious she was overwhelmed and needed help. Every other rental company at the airport had multiple people assisting customers, but Europcar left just one person to handle everything.
I had to wait over an hour with my special needs child, who was very stressed by the long wait and busy environment. There was nothing we could do but wait our turn. For a major company like Europcar, this is simply not acceptable.
They really need to staff their desks properly, especially at busy locations like airports. The service was not up to standard, and I hope they make improvements.
Then, after finally getting the keys, I was told someone would meet me at the car to go through everything. But when I got to the car and asked the staff member there for help, she told me to "just take the car" and check it myself. I was told to compare it to a damage report that was only written down—nothing was marked on the car drawing itself—and to add anything I noticed.
I’ve rented cars all over the world and never had to inspect and document damage entirely on my own. It made me really anxious that I might miss something and be blamed for damage I didn’t cause. I took a lot of photos and videos just in case. Luckily, when I returned the car there were no issues, but the whole process caused unnecessary stress.
Europcar really needs to improve both staffing and customer support at pickup. This experience made me think twice about using them again.
Forging signature and scratches
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. After great start, where Lara at the pick-up was very helpful and understandable, the return of the car was terrible. Lara offered their full protection which I kindly refused because I already had insurance through Booking. At the return we just left the keys and the employee said there is no need to stay and review if there was no damage. We were sure there was no damage (unfortunately we didn't take the pictures afterwards) so we left. However, I receive the bill with damage surcharge (170€)! They sent the statement of the return with the picture of the scratch and customers signature (which I didn't signed!) I strongly explained this is not my sign. They send basic response with sending new document which I see the first time - declaration of the accident with my sign again.
I cannot explain enough how this is illegal and terrible service and my guess is this would be avoided if you pay for their insurance :)
Palma de Mallorca Airport
Very good service in PMI Airport Mallorca.
Fantastic Service from Start to Finish – Thank You Europcar!
After a terrible experience with another rental company at Palma de Mallorca Airport, Europcar completely saved my trip. It was already 11:00 PM, I was traveling with children, and I had no car.
A very friendly and professional employee with brown hair helped me right away. He offered a great price, fast service, and treated me with kindness and respect — exactly what I needed after hours of stress.
But it gets better:
When I returned the car, I realized I had forgotten my sunglasses inside. I went back just 10 minutes later, and the staff had already found them and placed them safely in a secure lost & found box. One of the employees even created an official item loss report for me — so organized and trustworthy!
From start to finish, Europcar showed excellent customer service, honesty, and professionalism. I will definitely rent from them again and highly recommend them to everyone
Do not hire your car here
Do not hire your car here. They offered me an upgrade for 50 euro, which i considered reasonable on top of the 250 euro we already paid.
I had to pay an 500 extra and, upon asking why it was 500 instead of 50, they told me it was the deposit that would be returned upon arrival without damage.
But unfortunately i only received a 100 euro as return. From reading other reviews in dutch, we were definitely not the only ones who were miskead this way.
So...be aware!
Good service Europcar Ibiza Airport
Good service on Ibiza Airport from Sonia :)
I do not recommend renting a car from Europcar Spain
I do not recommend renting a car from them. I paid for the rental and insurance for 8 days, arrived at Fuerteventura airport where they wanted to charge me again for the car insurance at the counter. Because I insisted that I had already paid for the insurance and wanted to call the company's headquarters, the employee at the counter canceled the contract I had already paid for. She did not return my money, so I was left without money and without a car. Be careful, because they cheat on insurance, they take the money, but you do not get the car. I recommend SIXT car rental.
Unprofessional and distressing experience
I took particular care when renting and returning the vehicle, a [car model, e.g., Tesla Model 3], and I documented the car’s condition thoroughly with timestamped photos and videos upon collection. I strongly advise other customers to do the same, as unfortunately, I was later accused of causing damage that was clearly present beforehand.
To my shock, I received an email on Easter Sunday informing me of alleged damages, which immediately caused unnecessary stress and frustration. I have since provided clear visual evidence that disproves the claim — the damages noted were pre-existing and evidently missed by your staff during the pre-rental inspection.
Additionally, the vehicle was in poor condition upon pickup. It was not cleaned, it was handed over with only 60% battery charge (despite the return report falsely claiming 80-100%), and the car had multiple dents and scratches — some of which overlapped in the inspection report (e.g., damage numbers 2 and 9 appear to reference the same area). This inconsistency makes it extremely difficult for renters to identify and report damage accurately at pickup, and undermines your position that full responsibility lies with the customer.
For a company of Europcar’s reputation, I find this experience disappointing and concerning. Without my own documentation, I would have been wrongly charged hundreds of euros. Your internal processes clearly failed in this instance, and I urge Europcar to implement a standardized photo/video check-in process — both for your staff and your customers — to avoid future disputes like this.
Hire car was only fit for the scrap yard
I picked up a hire car from the Murcia branch after my own car broke down, and I can honestly say it was the worst car I've ever driven in my life. The driver's door was damaged from previous attempts to force it open, meaning there was a lot of wind noice when driving as the door no longer sealed shut properly.
There was a large scrape / impact on the front side of the bumper.
Worst was the gearbox, where it was a lottery whether you selected first gear or third gear and meant the car was very dangerous when pulling out of junctions.
Absolute disgrace of a car and it is shocking that Europcar feel this is an acceptable car to still hire out to customers.
Car broke down on first day
Car broke down on first day, had to chase to get replacement. Now need to get taxi 18 miles to pick up replacement at own expense.
Bad experience at Bilbao airport
Bad experience at Bilbao airport. Forced to accept an upgrade and then charged for pre-existing damage. Avoid.
This company has a really bad attitude
This company has a really bad attitude, they rent out cars with a lot of damage. I rented a car in Spain, it only had 2 registered damages, but in reality it had many more. I took pictures of the car to document the damages that were there, the problem is that when a car has a lot of damage, it is precisely the damage that you do not have a good picture of that they want you to pay for. That is, they say all the other damages are the same, even though they are not registered and actually less than the one that they want to pay for. I did not make any of the damage that car had. Do not rent from Europcar, it is a dishonest company.
