I booked my bike into the Cardiff Fettle workshop for some straightforward work: replacing the gear cables and setting up the disc brakes. The booking process allowed me to provide details of both the bike and the work required, so I expected that if there were any issues, they would be identified before I brought the bike in.

After dropping the bike off, I received a message the following day saying they couldn’t complete the work because they didn’t have the necessary tools. The mechanic offered to complete the gear cable replacement and then deliver the bike to another shop that could carry out the remaining work.

Unfortunately, after that, communication virtually stopped. Nine days passed with no meaningful updates, and it eventually became clear that nothing had actually been done. After ten days, the bike was finally delivered to another bike shop, who completed the remaining work within a matter of hours.

Fettle charged £80 for replacing the gear cables on a road bike—a job that still took ten days to complete—and I was told this was a reduced price because of the problems I’d experienced.

My first impression of the workshop wasn’t great either. I arrived at the advertised opening time but had to wait around 30 minutes for the shop to open. Inside, the workshop looked untidy, with clutter and empty Coke cans lying around, which didn’t inspire confidence.

The concept behind Fettle is good, but in my experience the execution fell well short. If you’re offering a professional bike repair service, you need to ensure workshops have the tools to carry out the work they accept, keep customers updated, and use the app as the primary communication channel rather than relying on text messages.

Overall, this was a frustrating experience that took far longer than it should have. The second bike shop completed the outstanding work in just a few hours, highlighting how avoidable the delays were.

Quick, thorough, great communication, bike good as new, will be using fettle from now on!

Once booked in fettle is amazing. sadly the phone and booking was fairly hopeless for me. But I persisted and it was worth it for great technicians who were very helpful

Knowledgeable high standard of work on e-bike. Picking the bike up and dropping off worked well with clear updated tracking. There was a minor issue after they dropped off the bike but they came the next day and sorted no problem. Would highly recommend.

Bike: Electric Ribble

Definitely the worst experience ever! Electric Brompton owners be warned. Because I learned the hard way. Never take your electric brompton bike to Fettle. They don’t have capacity to do it. I waited more than a month to have mine fixed. And guess what, it didn’t get fixed. Because they don’t even have the equipment to even find out whats wrong with the bike. So the bike just sat there at the shop without even knowing whats wrong with it. So I ended up pulling it out and bringing it directly to Brompton. So save yourself the hassle. Bring your bike directly to Brompton never Fettle. They are just the worst! While waiting for my bike to get fixed their East Dulwich shop (one near my place) had to close because its needing roof repairs. So they sent it to their Finsbury Park shop. When I decided to just pull it out they had to send it to Streatham hill to pick up because its the one nearest me. The inconvenience it brought me is horrible. I had to call them and follow up so many times because they’re so bad in updating whats happening. They failed even with the courtesy of letting me know why its taking so long. I had to call them myself just to know that they’re waiting for a diagnostic cable from Brompton that never came. Just horrible!

Really delighted with the fantastic work Patrick has done on my Canyon. He went above and beyond to make sure the new cockpit was dialled in to my bike fit, and the finished job is to an excellent standard. A genuinely friendly and welcoming shop. I’ll definitely be back as a regular for any future bike needs.

Fixed a leaky hydraulic brake, replaced contaminated discs, and replaced and set up tubeless tyres.

Sent my vanmoof for a gear mechanism replacement, bike was returned with another error code. they did not tell me the bnike was no longer working. Have called 5 times they promise to return my call but have not so far. very disappointed in the service. Recommend not to use for Vanmoof.
