Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 27 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the products received, often finding them to be of poor quality, dead upon arrival, or not as advertised. The delivery service was frequently criticized for being slow, unreliable, and causing issues with live plants arriving at inappropriate times for planting. Furthermore, customer service was a major point of frustration, with many reporting difficulties reaching helpful representatives, receiving unhelpful responses, or experiencing issues with order cancellations and refunds. Some people were also dissatisfied with the ordering process itself, citing issues with unexpected shipping costs, orders being processed incorrectly, or items being out of stock despite being listed as available. Conversely, a few other people also felt that while the company has a good selection of seeds and plants, the overall experience was consistently disappointing.

Save yourself time and trouble by avoiding this place.

I had used Gurney's in the past and had no problem with the strawberry plants that I ordered. I recently ordered more strawberries and a peach tree. After I ordered I found a tree available locally and cancelled the one I ordered from them via their online chat feature, no problem. Then I notice that the other items I ordered, even though the item showed available for shipping, kept having the shipping estimates moved up, to over two weeks away. I emailed their customer service to ask why and never heard back. I then went online and used their chat to ask why and was given no actual reason for this happening. I cancelled the order and will get my plants from elsewhere. Save yourself the potential headache and go with a nursery that has better reviews than this place.

I ordered strawberries for zone 7b

I ordered strawberries for zone 7b. Our average last frost date is April 7th. They arrived from Gurney's on February 15th. Undoubtedly, they will die (yes, they're in a cool, dry place) and, when I ask for them to be replaced, I will be told that they are out-of-stock. I called but the customer service guy was obviously just reading from a script.

Only giving one star because I have

Only giving one star because I have to! I am so disgruntled with the dishonest email promotions of free shipping with discount codes that never work. Since this is an order I usually make once a year I just always end up paying the shipping costs that should be free and shrugging it off but today I tried to contact customer service after two hours between a buggy chat function and call my problem was not able to be resolved. I was given a variety of useless “free shipping discount codes” that never work and told I’d have to spend $15 more in order to get it to work. I will not be spending $.01 more with this company!

Fraudulently selling jujube tree

I ordered a jujube tree. When the order was received it was an oak tree (validated by an app that identified it). It was nowhere near the picture on Gurney's website of a jujube tree. When I contacted customer service and offered to send a picture, they told me they validated that it was a jujube tree and to go ahead and plant it. The trees are not cheap and I do not need another freaking oak tree. I searched Google and there is absolutely no jujube tree that looks like the one they sent me. Their customer service needs improvement. I am so frustrated.

I had made a $200 order in February

I had made a $200 order in February. I received most my order sans a peach tree (true gold variety), I received an email telling me they ran out of stock, obviously they took my order knowing they did not have it. The email said that if I wanted the tree, do nothing and it would come for fall delivery. So I did nothing. Fast forward to few days ago; check status of order, it did not show in my account. So I emailed for a status update. Get email back 2 days later saying yes we cancelled your order and refunded card. Well that was a gift card that I exhausted and threw away. I called customer and was told nothing they could do, too bad. Well I have bought from Gurneys on and off for 30 years, I will never buy from Henrys', Gardens Alive or Gurneys. These are all the same company and use a what appears to be an off-shore customer service phone call center. They never gave me an opportunity to make decisions with my order, even though they had my money for 8 months, then just cancel order without a email to inform me, even though website currently shows the tree available for spring order. Since I do not have that gift card and they refunded without consulting me, that money is gone, $80. Horrible customer service, even earlier in the year when some of my pine berries did not grow and fern did not grow and I called. I was told to wait even though things had been planted for over 2 months. They never did grow. Will never buy from any of this companies websites and I suggest everyone think twice about ordering from these people.

Plant shipping delays

This company took my order for plants they knew they did not have. When I purchased they were in stock and when I checked they were out of stock. I received 2 of them a month late. The other two I have not received yet and the shipping date has been pushed back to November. Too late to plant. I then demanded a refund for the remaining product and was told that the order had already been processed and the couldn’t. This issue has pushed up the ladder. What pisses me off is that you never get to speak to anyone that speaks coherent English. I will NEVER order from this company again.

Very Disappointed – Poor Quality and Communication

I’ve ordered from Gurney’s three different times, and each experience has been disappointing. My first order was for strawberries, most of them died after planting, and the few that survived produced nothing. Then I ordered a blueberry bush, which they canceled after months of waiting with no notification at all. I decided to give them one more try and ordered starter peppers and tomatoes — several died, and only a few produced a couple of decent tomatoes.

Most recently, I ordered garlic, and what I received were tiny, unusable cloves, nothing like what was advertised. The shipping times are outrageous, and the quality is nowhere near what’s promised. After reading so many similar complaints, I honestly don’t understand how this company is still operating the way it is.

I won’t be spending any more of my money here.

They lied about what was in stock

They lied about what was in stock. After I ordered the shipping dates just kept slipping, lost over a month of growth waiting on my shipment, only to be shorted trees. Now I have credit and have to wait until next year to reorder. I will use Jungs from now on.

Avoid Gurneys.com At All Costs

I recently purchased a rose bush and about 20 strawberry plantlets from Gurney’s, and unfortunately, it was a thoroughly disappointing experience. The strawberry plants arrived in a sealed plastic bag with no air holes, and they were left in that condition for at least a week before shipping. When they arrived, they were dead, and the condition was worse than the plants I was trying to replace. Despite receiving a couple of extra plants, the entire batch was unsalvageable. As for the rose bush, it arrived in a box that had clearly been handled improperly during shipping, causing the soil to spill everywhere and leaving the plant in a rough state. It took a lot of effort and gardening experience to nurse it back to health, but the strawberries were a total loss. Overall, I would strongly advise anyone to avoid Gurney’s and opt for a local nursery or a more reliable company. This was, hands down, the worst experience I’ve had with a plant supplier.

Dead plant and refused a refund

Not only did they ship me an expensive plant that was not just dead but actually rotting, but the customer service IN INDIA was rude and dismissive. Refused to give me a refund, would only give me a credit on a future purchase (why would I buy from them again?) or they'd send me a replacement NEXT YEAR. Could not get a supervisor and I will have to just dispute this with my credit card company.

No quality control, no refunds

No quality control, no refunds, high prices. Please consider spending your money at smaller businesses. 3 orders and I've had problems every time. I've received a wrong item, weak/dying plants, and most recently, moldy dried out garlic bulbs. Their customer service is a random call center, that will only offer you a coupon code. They will not respond to emails. They actually don't give refunds, just a coupon code that can only be applied if you order by phone. You'll have to pay shipping again if you want to use your coupon. They have no incentive to get your order correct. Gurneys has an outdated customer service policy. Nowhere else will refuse to refund you for their mistake and force you to order more from them, over the phone with a coupon.

I ordered sweet potatoes May 11th…

I ordered sweet potatoes May 11th (spring) they said they send them out in spring... I hadn't recieved them weeks later. I asked for a refund and they said they'd give me a "replacement Certificate".

I wanted a refund but they said their policy is not to give refunds and I quote "for an item that is not currently in stock but is scheduled to return in a future."

Their website said they were available in the spirng... its still spring.

wont refund 140.00

I ordered 6 miniatures roses. Planted them, 2 started to bloom the other 4 did not. I submiteed an email for refund. They do not refund but will give me 140.00 credit. SO when you buy something and it doesn't "work" you won't get your money back. Find another nursery. Also my name is Lily...they addressed me as DOnald. SO Parveen 4620
Customer Service, doesn't take th time to see my name is Lily. I will finish my 140 then I'm gone. I gave them a lot of business. No more. Home depot and other companies don't treat me like this

I spent $86 dollars for what I though…

I spent $86 dollars for what I thought was going to be strawberry plants and a mature blue berry bush and a sunflower.
What I received as a clump of almost dead strawberry roots, a tiny, broken blue berry twigs, and a small twig with some barely alive sprouts that is suppose to be a sunflower. I called customer service and was told to plant them and try to bring them back to life and see if they die after six weeks of nurturing.
Very unsatisfied!!!

Communication and Customer Service Terrible

I ordered 2 types of strawberries and some other plants from them back in March. A week later I sent the link to my neighbor and she ordered some of the same exact strawberries.

She received her plants nearly immediately. Mine were back ordered. I didn’t receive any email communication about it being back ordered. I received a partial order and looked up the rest - two backordered and one already cancelled.

Super cool of them to let the customer know part of the order was cancelled. I could have ordered my plants somewhere else but instead I can’t get them in the ground at all this year.

I emailed and asked the status. It was ignored. I know this because I emailed again days later and asked to cancel due to lack of response from them and it was immediately canceled. So not only is their shipping a disaster but they don’t care enough from a customer service perspective to be transparent. I will NEVER order from this company again. I will not that I received a refund but too little too late.

Seeds never arrived- told to keep…

Seeds never arrived- told to keep waiting

I ordered 2 fruit trees and many of my garden seeds in mid-March. The trees came very quickly but the seeds never arrived (it's been at least 6 weeks). I've sent them 3 emails and the first two told me to keep waiting.

I'm well past being able to create my own garden starts this year- it's going to be a disaster. I see many other people are having the same issue. This company fell hard.

They're going to give me a partial refund or they're going to get a charge back from my credit union. Their choice.

Deceptive business practices, unethical transaction standards

Read the reviews folks, learn from my misfortune. Do I have to give them a star, well yes if I want to leave a review. DO NOT, DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY, their business practices and ethics are questionable at the very best. Ordered Deer Resistant Seed Mix X4 and Hummingbird & Butterfly Annual Garden Seed X3 for total of $41.79 on March 18, 2025. Standard Shipping, Gurney's will determine ship date by plant zone. Seems fair enough, but now April 22nd I still have not received my order, is past time to plant these seeds and Gurney's Off Shore Customer Service is absolutely an abomination! On 04/10/25 I called and was told order shipped 4/1/25 must wait 10-15 days before they will do anything on order. Phoned again on 4/18/25 and requested refund, was told NO NO you must wait another 24 hrs, it's 15 business days; NO REFUNDS only store credit or reship or order. Called today, 04/22/25 and again requested refund, why would I want store credit with someone I no longer want to do business with? Why would I want items reshipped when it is already too late? I just want my money back. Interesting concept I paid, you didn't deliver, you have not fulfilled your obligation to me. Customer Service continually regurgitated the shipping date of 4/1/25 by 1st class USPS, they can't track 1st class USPS. When pressing for refund I then told that the order shipped on 4/6/25 by FedEx. Changing the story within 4 minutes and trying to push out responsibility for failure to deliver. When I expressed my sorrow that the Customer Service Agent must deal with these type of phone calls all day long and is relegated to read from a script and continually repeat information that has already been established, that it must be very wearing and disheartening to represent such a dishonest company. She apologized again, asked me to hold, and disconnected the call without resolution.
