Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 27 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the products received, often finding them to be of poor quality, dead upon arrival, or not as advertised. The delivery service was frequently criticized for being slow, unreliable, and causing issues with live plants arriving at inappropriate times for planting. Furthermore, customer service was a major point of frustration, with many reporting difficulties reaching helpful representatives, receiving unhelpful responses, or experiencing issues with order cancellations and refunds. Some people were also dissatisfied with the ordering process itself, citing issues with unexpected shipping costs, orders being processed incorrectly, or items being out of stock despite being listed as available. Conversely, a few other people also felt that while the company has a good selection of seeds and plants, the overall experience was consistently disappointing.

Never shipped. Now past the window

Ordered onions and potatoes 2 months early!
They never shipped them. Now its past the time to plant them and it still says shipping batching. CS says they will ship. NO! Waste of my time and money. Now its too late to order from another store. Horrible experience!

Customer Service is non existant

Customer Service is non existant. I'm sorry this company has declined so much in the last few years that I have to leave a negative review. There is absolutely no reason it should take so long to receive an order especially when said order is so late that you can't plant the seeds.

No seeds and bad customer service

Ordered some seeds where supposed to be here 10 day from shipping, called on day 11 was told a label was made I needed seeds by day they should have been here for zone planting, ordered plenty early enough. When I ask for refund I was denied by someone in the Philippines, I couldn’t even talk to someone in USA, sent two emails they never replied. Don’t waste your time or money, it’s obvious leadership of this company has changed.

I would give zero stars if it was…

I would give zero stars if it was allowed. Placed an order with gurneys, you know to see how they are. Fraudulent is one way to put it. They never even attempted to ship my order. 38 days past the initial order and 21 days past the 1st estimated shipping date. Well that changed once a week to the following week. Eventually I had to try and contact them, another horrible disaster. Bonnie should be fired for incompetence immediately. We'll long story short, they did not fix anything told me magically my item was being prepared as we speak. I'm sure that was bull just so they can close the open problem. Do not use this company no matter how good their product may be, you will never know because you will never get it.

Ordered 4 plants

Ordered 4 plants. Estimated shipping said 2/3 to 2/17 on my confirmation email. It's now 3/5 and they still haven't shipped, they claim they will be this week.
Also, they have outsourced their customer service to some foreign business. NOT OK. I'll never order from them again due to both of these issues.

Shipping prices are a killer

They may have good seeds but their shipping charges are outrageous! 4 regular packets of seed cost $15 and that is standard shipping.

There prices are also very high compared with their competitors.

For these reasons I will not shop there any more.

I wouldn't have used them in the first place but I had a credit there and needed to get it used up.

First time ordering from Gurneys

First time ordering from Gurneys. I ordered several fruit trees. I got the apple trees fairly quick. But the other fruit bushes and garlic took forever.

Let's put it this way I just got my blueberry/blackberry/asparagus plants like yesterday. I'm in Zone 5. I ordered these plants in the 2nd week of August. We are due to get frost in less than 2 weeks. Customer service told me it takes 6-8 WEEKS to establish roots. Are you kidding me?

Pretty sure its illegal to just cover stuff via "credit" in their store vs. a refund.

So now I have a bunch of plants that are going to die. Also, all the ship dates kept getting pushed back everyday almost. Then things that WERE in stock were suddenly SOLD out so while waiting on one thing at one point I had like 5 things OUT of stock...that I had ordered several weeks ago.

Oh and btw I STILL haven't gotten my raspberries (2 plants) also ordered at the same time. (aka been 9 weeks).

Not trying to be a jerk but I know I'll have to contact them in the spring to say all my plants have died because dude I need more than 2 WEEKS for my plants to establish for WINTER. Ugh.

Run far far away please. I didn't check reviews because I thought I wouldn't need to check reviews as I had heard of them before and thought they were reputable. No, you will wait WEEKS (like 3 months) and they'll all die because you won't have time to plant them.

Fraudulant business

Fraudulant business. Do not order plants or seeds here. Horrible quality. We were suckered in with a "free shipping" promotion, then sent a bill for 3x the shipping rate at a later date. Classic bait & switch.

Garlic cloves

Ordered 5 varieties of hardneck garlic. Shipping was delayed a bit due to out of stock items. But when the product arrived, the bulbs and hence the cloves were the smallest I have ever seen. Garlic cloves the size of your baby finger do not grow normal size bulbs.

Company offered $20 credit (off next order). Problem order was $100+. The credit on some future order won't change the quality of the crop we will harvest next June.

AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!

I've used Gurney's off and on for quite a number of years (never with a positive outcome); thinking that maybe they've improved their products and service. And every time I feel like a fool and should slap myself in the head!
This last time it was a Canna that was SUPPOSED TO BE a Phaison and after growing for several months, it was clear that it was not! In fact it was totally different and mundane, cheaper variety.
They agreed to give me credit, not return $, so I ordered a little pH tester; you know, the kind you insert into the moistened soil and get a pH reading. The site description says: "Just place the prongs of your pH tester in soil sample, wait 60 seconds and read the pH measurement on the meter." Well, I got this little piece of garbage made where you might think it would be, and instructions that required you to dig the soil, totally clean the soil, put the soil in a container, add water, submerge meter probes completely into the soil, pack the soil around the probes then wait one minute. Really??
I called to return this meter, got "overseas" customer support person who could not understand why I was returning it (language barrier), but eventually agreed to taking the return at my cost for shipping. Hardly worth the effort and cost. The pH analyzer is going directly into the trash. NEVER AGAIN DO BUSINESS WITH GURNEYS!!!

Dishonest

They sent me a tiny damaged plant where they clearly pruned most of it to use it to propagate. It was also covered in moss growth and head dead branches all over it. I paid around $70 for two honeysuckles that came in 4 inch posts that had clearly every single branch amputated. Many of what remained were dead. This is just pathetic

Packets full of deception

Potatoes didn't even begin to grow. They turned black and shriveled. Cucumbers, well, they aren't. Some other seed was in the packet. First all seemed right when seeing full leaves, then flowering, and then...well what are the yellow balloon things? Also, is the fertilizer what it says it is? I'm not sure. So far the muhly grass is slowly growing. I'll see how long and how high in the coming weeks. This is like ordering a fine red wine to get grape juice in the mail. Deceptive practices.

I have never been so disappointed. Don't have exact date of purchase…

I have never been so disappointed with a vendor as I am with Gurney. We ordered specific tomato plants that were sold out at all of our local nurseries. The ones we bought came in a bundle of 3. Freight was the same as the cost of the plants, but we loved these tomatoes from another company and felt they were worth it. We were assured they'd be shipped at planting time for our area. They came late, root balls were approx. 1" square, bone dry, dead leaves and stems. One plant was less than 3" with 2 partially green leaves, and the other 2 were just about 3" with dried brownish green leaves. We did everything required and watched them die, regardless of what we did. They were awful and I would never recommend this company. How they could have sent us what looked like dead weeds is beyond me. This was not an error. It was poor business practice pushing tiny, dry, dying plants.

My first time buying from here

My first time buying from here, and I love how smooth everything went. My blackberry bush is getting full and looking really good and even already has a bloom! Very healthy plant and good roots.

Blueberries and strawberries…

I ordered two blue-berry plants and three strawberry plants. I have been gardening for over 40 years so I have some experience with planting. I paid over $100 for these plants and none have grown. Terrible product. Do not buy from them!!
