Mahlkönig E64 WS + Sync Scale – Great Concept, Frustrating Reality

I want to start by saying that the idea behind the Mahlkönig E64 WS and Sync Scale system is genuinely exciting. The promise of an automated, self-adjusting espresso workflow that simplifies the dialing-in process sounds like a dream for home users. Unfortunately, after weeks of testing, the reality fell far short of that promise.

The system is marketed as an intuitive, streamlined experience for home use — set it up, let it learn, and enjoy consistent espresso. What I actually experienced was the opposite: a time-consuming, unpredictable troubleshooting exercise that cost me a significant amount of premium coffee and a great deal of patience.

The Sync Scale is where most of the problems originate. The espresso flow detection is inconsistent at best. The timer would begin counting during pre-infusion, then reset to zero once the coffee actually started flowing, only to take several additional seconds before it began measuring properly. This throws off the entire extraction timing and leads to grind adjustment recommendations that simply do not reflect what is happening in the cup. In many cases, the auto-detection feature would stop registering flow mid-shot and signal the grinder to adjust finer — even when the grind was already too fine. Factory resets and repeated test rounds did not resolve the behavior.

On the grinder side, the same burr distance setting produced completely opposite results in back-to-back shots. Identical parameters led to a 37-gram shot pulling in 11 seconds one attempt, and less than 2 grams in 5 seconds the next. That level of inconsistency goes well beyond normal dialing variation.
I am not a beginner. I understand espresso extraction, workflow variables, and what reasonable shot-to-shot variation looks like. This was something else entirely.

The theory behind this system is excellent and I genuinely hope Mahlkönig continues developing it. But as it stands today, the execution is not ready for home use as advertised. Until the company conducts more rigorous real-world testing and addresses the Sync Scale reliability issues, I cannot recommend this system to anyone expecting a simple and dependable daily workflow.
Return process was smooth and customer support was responsive, which I appreciate — but the product itself needs more work before it lives up to its promise.

Customer Service

I sent an email requesting support, I received an email in which they responded to a review in which I complained that they do not respond and since then silence.
ZERO score for customer service. I understand from their dealer that they do not respond to them either. You simply have to deal with their products. I personally struggle to correlate a sync scale with a sync grinder. I spent 3,000eur and I can not use them.
I repeat ZERO customer service

Poor service

Update:

Unfortunately, I hadn't checked this beforehand, but Mahlkönig gives a maximum of two years warranty on its products if bought from them in the online store and only one year if bought elsewhere.

The manufacturer calls itself a king, ok that has now brought out the negative side of a king for me. The king doesn't seem to be particularly convinced of his products himself if he gives a maximum of one or two years warranty on his products and at the same time charges royal prices for his products.

Showing no interest in the defect after the warranty has expired also gives the impression that the king either already knows about the defect or does not want to find out what caused the defect in order to improve his products.

I think this is a disgrace for a premium manufacturer, I will no longer buy a Mahlkönig product and will tell everyone in my community about it.

It took a few days for the first support request to be answered, which only contained a question back to me. Since answering this question, I haven't heard anything for days. Very annoying. What good are the best grinders on the market if the support is poor?
