During the Covid-19 pandemic we've introduced a number of changes to our business. We've endeavoured to keep most of our branches open, but some have had to close, apologies if this has caused an inconvenience. In every open branch we have reduced staff numbers to ensure social distancing is adhered too, we have also closed public areas like waiting rooms. We're encouraging customers to book and pay online to reduce the amount of personal contact required in-branch. We are also prioritising emergency and essential service vehicles. With this in place turn around times might be affected, we might be slower to answer phone calls or deal with drive ins. These are difficult times for all of us and the team at McConechys are trying to hard to provide a service, we appreciate your understanding and patients when required. Scotland and North East England's leading independent supplier of tyres and high-quality automative products. You don't need a mechanic, you need a McConechy!

Went to Halfords Mcconechys in…
Went to Halfords Mcconechys in Speitsbridge , Glasgow due my Nissan Qashqais' front offside suspension spring breaking. Unfortunately all local independent garages had a waiting list of two weeks , so needing my car I went to this so called garage. I asked them to do the nearside spring as well , ended up with a bill of nearly £1200 as they stated that I need new link arms, coupling rods and suspension arm mounts. Between a rock and hard place as I needed my car. When I got the car back a top arm mounting bolt was missing and the platic section under my windscreen had no securing clips , they put a mounting bolt on nearly 5 weeks later still awaiting the securing clips. Fobbed off by as it stands now - 4 members of staff , one stated that they had ordered them from Nissan Darnley , I checked - they hadn't. Don't go there , rip off merchants and very poor communication and after care .
POLICE has been involved, Absolutely Appalling Experience – Avoid This Place at All Costs!
POLICE has been involved, Absolutely Appalling Experience – Avoid This Place at All Costs!
I visited the Stranraer branch of Halfords for a full service yesterday, and it was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. I deeply regret not reading other reviews beforehand, especially on Trustpilot.
I handed my car over at 10 AM, and six hours later, they were still “changing the oil.” Over the phone, they assured me the car would be ready in a couple of hours, and then guaranteed by 4 PM. It was 5:30 PM, and still no sign of completion. This level of incompetence is beyond frustrating, and I will NEVER be coming back here.
To make matters worse, they informed me at the end of the job that the tyres they sold me in April 2023—just 16 months ago—were already at the end of their life. My previous set of tyres lasted over 5 years, so you can imagine my shock. When I mentioned I’d need to order new tyres (obviously not from them), they reported me to the POLICE! I was fined shortly after for driving home on worn tyres. The audacity to sell me such poor-quality tyres and then call the police when I chose not to buy from them again is absolutely disgusting.
Not only did they keep my car for 7 and a half hours for a service, but they also failed to fix the rear differrencial oil leak which i precisely asked for and even more importantly they failed to apologize for the inconvenience, instead blaming everything else around them. Minutes later, they had the nerve to act as if it was all completely normal, asking me to continue waiting like nothing was wrong.
Avoid this place like the plague. They are unprofessional, dishonest, and their customer service is non-existent. Save yourself the stress and go elsewhere. Just wondering how Halfords can afford their name to be compromised like that.
Snapped brake line
My warning light came on for low brake fluid when in Tesco Oban. I went to Halfords McConechys in Oban across the road, telling them my warning light had come on and the brake pedal was spongy. The manager came out and took a look, and told me the brake line had snapped. He put the car up in the ramp, in front of other jobs immediately to investigate further, and told me not to drive it. He didn't take any money from me for looking at it. Was very nice of him to drop everything when he realised I had a serious issue. Would definitely use again and highly recommend to anyone.
Awful. Avoid.
Booked Aircon recharge day before after a pre check at Halfords in Elgin.
Booked time off work and got my wife to follow me down for a lift after her 12 hour shift only to be met with a dour and unapologetic individual who didn't even care. Nobody there to run the machine and no communication to warn me. This world is just falling apart. Nobody has any respect for anyone anymore. Obviously...not recommended 😕
Please do not go here. Read these reviews.
Wish I had looked up the reviews on here before going to this garage. Never again!!!
They told me my back break pads and discs needed changed - they did not and thankfully I never got them changed.
They over charged me by 40% to what Aberdeen Halfords would have charged me for breaks. And refused to price match until I got their head office involved.
The mechanic has a way of talking down to you without getting his facts right. The branch manager is just as arrogant.
I've written to Halfords head office with an official complaint - why they have associated themselves with this garage I do not know.
Absolutely shocking service from…
Absolutely shocking service from Service Manager Kenny.
Dropped my car off for an MOT at 0830, no bother it will be ready in an hour. So my 10 month old baby and I went for a walk (in 4 degrees temperatures). Get a call at 0928 and I think great that's it ready....
"Wee problem, the MOT tester has called in sick so we can't do your MOT."
Get told to bring it back at 0830 the following morning. Kennys attitude was to shrug his shoulders and say nothing he could do. He could have told me that at 0830.
Next morning go back in and was told that they did not tell me to come back today and they were "rammed". I assured him that I had been told to do this and his colleague Anton confirmed this. Kenny then told me they would "try and squeeze me in at some point", which again I challenged. Anton overruled him and said it would be done next.
The car failed it's MOT on brake pads, and Kenny told me it would need to be brought in another day. I explained this wasn't possible due to MOT expiring at midnight and Anton had assured me work would get done today. Again Kenny was just being difficult as Anton agreed it would be done before lunchtime.
I then get a call an hour later saying they can't do the brakes as they can't get the electric handbrake unlocked and it was my problem to go and find somewhere else.
I got it done at another garage with no bother, and when I went back to Halfords I got talking to the MOT tester who was talking about how he had had a bad day yesterday ( the day my MOT was meant to be getting done) due to his computer not working! So Kenny told me a lie, the MOT technician WAS in!
An absolutely dreadful experience mainly down to the service manager Kenny who admitted to me he doesn't even like his job.
I will never step foot in Halfords again.
Absolute disgrace of a place
Absolute disgrace of a place. The rear door lock and electric window on my partners Renault van are both INOP. Van was originally in EK McConechys middle of February but apparently the only person able to fix the van had been moved to Bearsden. My partners van was in East Kilbride for over a week and no one notified him that they couldn’t sort it until my partner called them thinking the van would be sorted and ready for collection. Van was then booked into Bearsden. They have done nothing but tell lies for the last six weeks. The part they needed was again, APPARENTLY, ordered and on its way from France. My partner again called them for an update this morning on when the part is due to be delivered and they have told him they think they have returned the part to France in error,. so now, six weeks later, the vans still not fixed and the MOT has expired.
Took my car for an mot
Took my car for an mot, passed but had an advisory for oil sump and obviously oil to put in the new sump. Totaled £490. I bulked at the price but the guy at the counter insisted it would fail within 2 months. I took it to another local garage. They checked it, told me the sump had at least 3 to 4 years of use left in it. There wasn't even a leak. The only issue was surface rust on the top which he scraped off and cleaned. Cost me £20. £20!!!! Utter, utter disgrace. I will never take my car here again, they basically tried to rob me. I will be writing a letter of complaint.
Elgin branch
Elgin branch. After some issues with a booking earlier in the week, Stuart rectified this to my satisfaction and I received an excellent service from the staff today 👍
bad experience
Took my car to this MOT service and it failed because the beam light was too low. They told me: "we can't adjust it. We need to change it. And new headlight beam price is £345" It should only really fail if something is broken, not if the aim is too low. Headlight alignment is pretty much the only thing you are allowed to adjust on the MOT, and an effort should be made to adjust it before failing it. Last year's MOT service didn't say anything regarding my car's beam headlight. I will never bring my car to this garage anymore.
Booked a car in for free brake check
Booked a car in for free brake check - booked slot as 'drop off by 11.30', received text confirmation. Luckily I called them at 10 to check before leaving to be told 'we won't get around to that today - it will be at least a few days before we'd get to that'. So why offer a booking system on line if it is meaningless??
Luis hutcheon from aberdeen
Luis hutcheon from aberdeen arrived at our site to change a tyre and inspect other vehicles tyre his eye for detail noticed a tyre that looked under inflated he checked and he was right and found that the valve had a slow leak and was fitted incorrectly he remedied this in an efficient and professional manner. He is an excellent ambassador for your company
Top Marques
I visited McConechys/Halfords Autocentre in Dock Street Dundee recently and the customer service I received was excellent in every respect .
Keith was outstanding and I highly recommend this establishment . The staff are most professional , helpful , charming and informative .
Excellent and prompt service
I have used this centre for my MOT, checks and repairs for over 8months now. I am impressed everytime by their consistently excellent customer service. Today, I mistakenly filled my radiator coolant section with screenwash fluid and saw the screenwash was still not working. Went to the workshop and met amazing Derick who took time out to check for me and filled my windscreen wash with the right fluid while also fixing my radiator coolant that was overfilled. I can't be grateful enough for his help.
Elgin garage
Elgin garage; broke a stud removing nut and came out to show me how it was the fault of whoever had last fitted the nut;doing so at an angle. When I informed them it was them just a few months ago the response was a shrug and asked of it had been serviced, followed by another shrug and silence. No discussion about driving safely the two young children home with me who had waited two hours. Was told I'd get a call back with a price to sort, no call.
Laughable
I will not list in detail the trouble and danger this company has cost me as we would be here all day. Avoid at all costs, the “work” while damaging other parts and the customer service is mind blowing as to why they still have paying customers. Cowboys.
Terrible Service
Booked appointment 2 weeks ago, ( took day off ) been to garage, now saying we don't deal with it...
Terrible service and people
avoid
took my car to mcchonechys for an MOT, failed my car and gave 5 advisories, all of which were repairs that had already been done not even 4 months prior to the MOT. quoted me £500 for just one repair. Took my car to a different garage, 0 advisories and 1 repair for less than half of the price mcchonechys quoted me. I'd avoid them at all costs, absolutely rinse people for money.
Avoid
Avoid! Booked in for a puncture repair and was was only 10mins away from garage and had to pull over vehicle on motorway as tyre was flat. Changed over the spare tyre on hard shoulder of motorway and revisited garage following morning. Advised garage of issue and told them I needed tyre either repaired correctly or new tyre fitted. I was assured tyre was now repaired correctly second time around and that I would have no issues.(no apology whatsoever)
Next morning I had to drive down south to airport/holiday and when I went to depart tyre was deflated again. Spare tyre needed to be fitted yet again which left me long journey with no spare. On return from airport I visited garage again and explained situation, raised my complaint that this was now my third time at garage with puncture. Again there was no apology whatsoever from customer service person nor any effort to fix issue knowing I was now back for the third time. Basically told “can’t do anything about it now, need to come back in 3 days”!! I have now had repair done correctly by another dealer and can assure I will not be using this company again. Customer service not good at all.
Never again
Never again. Would give minus if possible. Car in for an MOT, failed on a tyre and a new spring required. Was quoted an extraordinary amount for the repairs so said I would take my vehicle elsewhere. Upon collecting my vehicle my car would no longer start, staff were very unhelpful and refused to help if I did not pay. The garage Currently had my vehicle for almost a week and I need to arrange for it to be recovered. Never again. Horrible experience and staff just as bad so rude. Avoid at all costs.
