An amazing opportunity

A fantastic experience where I met some amazing people. The trip was really well organised and everyone who was part of the medical projects team were really welcoming. I learnt some valuable information for applying to university for medicine and believe all the help will make a big difference.

Great experience for medical school candidates

This project was exceptional to the very end. It provided us students with ample amounts of knowledge and experience while also keeping a fun, exciting, and friendly environment. Although geared mostly towards students looking to study in the UK, it is still a fantastic experience for anyone who is interested in medical school.

Amazing!

It was an extraordinary experience! I am more knowledgeable and educated on medicine. Also, I am better prepared for the college application process including personal statements and interviews.

Medical Project - Romania

It was a really great experience, and I was able to learn a lot from the doctors at the hospital. Not only did I gain amazing work experience, but i also gained a lot of help from a medical student and the advisors who helped us prepare for MMI's in medical school and how to write personal statements.

I recommend this to anyone who wants to gain experience and wants to have a great time

A great experience!

The clinical placement allowed me to gain a better understanding of the daily work in a hospital. The doctors, nurses and supervisors at Medical Projects were very welcoming and happy to answer questions. The mock interviews gave me an idea of what to expect at an actual interview. A great experience that I can recommend to anyone considering medicine.

Romania 2017

I thought that this was an amazing trip and that it was organised very well. I thought that the time we spent in the hospital was really beneficial, also the fact that it was very flexible how much time you could spend in the hospital was really good. Being able to have the medical students with us throughout the trip was also very helpful as we could always ask questions to further our learning and understanding. The only thing I would say to improve would be possibly introducing better fitting scrubs or even just having two pockets in the scrubs. Other than that, I thought all aspects were really well organised and I wouldn't have any other suggestions.

Overall great- but planning could be improved.

Overall great, but with some disturbances. The staff on MP, in the hospital and the people were all great, and I have gained skills which I will keep with me for the rest of my life. However, sending a booklet with a seemingly rigorous planning seemed kind of pointless when it was not to be followed at all. Also, why did we need to go to the hospital at 07:00 when most doctors had not even started to work at that time? Spending time in a conference room waiting was not fun! Also, the experience felt "luck based" as you were mostly forced to go around and seek out the doctors, hoping that they were doing something interesting/educational for you. Some better sync between Medical Projects and the hospital's schedule for surgeries + consultations would allow Medical Projects to send students to where the "interesting stuff" was going on and then rotate it with a better flow. It has to be said that planning is key when it comes to success! But again, I do recommend this trip for anyone who wants to pursue medicine, it will give you the hands-on experience you will need for your application, and it is hence very valuable.

Romania

Friendly people and nice location but it could be a bit better organised especially when it comes to actually shadowing a doctor in the hospital since there were times when you struggled to find something to do.

Amazing trip

Amazing experience, learnt so much and saw the life of doctors and nurses and everyone else in the hospital from a different side than I normally would. I also feel much more prepared for my application process to medical school. Definently recommending this to all my friends interested in studying medicine.

Far better than I could have anticipated

I did the Transylvania Project and gained knowl edge and experience that I could never have found in the UK. I was given the opportunity to shadow surgeries and spent time on the wards where the doctors were great at explaining everything to me. The evening sessions were also incredibly interesting and helpful and I recommend this project to anybody seeking to gain medical work experience.

Great experience

Spent two weeks there, each day was different spending time in a new department each morning. Lovely people and nice trips out, sadly didn't get to see as much of outside the hospital campus as I'd have hoped, but a lot of help and advice about preparing to get into uni.

A great experience.

Medical Projects not only made me more enthusiastic about medicine but also gave me a realistic and honest view of the career prospect itself. The staff were very sincere in teaching us everything we needed to know from the skills that go into making a great doctor to medicine interview techniques. I genuinely enjoyed my week and learnt a lot. Thoroughly recommend it!

Life changing experience

It definitely showed me a different perspective on life. The clinical debrief showed us how to pick up details which I thought was very useful, specially to give us a more accurate idea of what it's like to be a doctor and what it takes.
The interviews were good practice and I think it's a good idea to go for two weeks rather than just one week because the second week the doctors already know who you are and you feel more comfortable asking them questions or talking to patients. However I think we could have benefits from an explanation of how to do the ethical debate; maybe giving us some pointers as to what we should be thinking about beforehand because even after two weeks I didn't know how to do what they had said in the feedback from the previous week.
I feel like it might be a good idea for the medical students to meet up before to make sure they get on with each other and therefore help create a more friendly atmosphere. Having said this I did feel like I was part of a family.

My experience

Medical Projects has been one of the most exciting yet humbling experiences I've had. The experience itself was very well organised, with a friendly atmosphere, so I was made to feel extremely welcome. The knowledge I gained is invaluable, and shadowing doctors every day really helped me understand what skills you require to be a doctor. Surgery was something not many teenagers will see before medical school, so I'm particularly grateful for the opportunity to view it. I was also able to help in the local community, which really developed my awareness of the poor global distribution of wealth, as well as my compassion felt towards the people living in poverty. The mock interviews really boosted my confidence, and it was exciting to get an insight to what medical school might be like - Aoife, Annie, Tom and Alex all were eager to answer queries regarding this and more. We approached many ethical issues which allowed us to explore all viewpoints and come to an educated decision. I will never forget my Medical Projects experience, so I want to thank Mark, Eleanor, Aoife, Annie, Alex and Tom for everything you did for me - it really was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
