Take care …
The initial sale process is very well set up. There is clear guidance on how to photograph the vehicle and sensible advice on how to maximise the chances of a sale.
Initially, Motorway provided a fair provisional recommended price. Once I had uploaded all the vehicle details and photographs, Motorway came back with a second, reduced estimated sale price. That was fine.
However, just before the vehicle was due to go live for auction/listing, Motorway attempted to get me to accept an even lower estimated sale price. This was despite me having provided absolutely no new information about the vehicle which could have justified a further reduction.
I complained, and the second estimated value was reinstated. The car subsequently “sold” at that value — although see below.
It is worth emphasising that the second estimated value had been provided after Motorway had considered everything: mileage, age, condition, market and photographs — warts and all. Nothing further had been disclosed or had changed before Motorway sought to reduce the estimated price again, immediately before the auction.
That struck me as an attempt to pressure me into accepting a lower price at a time-sensitive point in the process.
Unfortunately, things got worse when the purchasing dealer arrived to inspect the car. Multiple supposed new “undisclosed issues” were identified and the dealer then attempted to price-chip me by more than £1,000.
This was a 10-year-old vehicle with 92,000 miles on the clock. The listing and photographs were full and clear about its age and condition. I therefore very politely told them where to go and declined to proceed at the reduced price.
There are good aspects to Motorway’s platform and the initial process is genuinely well designed. However, based on my experience, I would probably go elsewhere next time.
My advice to other users: be aware of the price you have agreed to proceed at and, if you experience similar attempts to reduce it without any genuinely new information or previously undisclosed problem, stand firm.
They were very helpful and supportive
They were very helpful and supportive, being a first time seller I was unsure if I was making the right decision. I wasn't comfortable to sell privately with strangers coming round our home. Great set up would advise to anyone in the same position, unless you get a similar offer from a part exchange.
Exceptional service
I had the pleasure of dealing with Connor, who was extremely helpful from start to finish. He went above and beyond to help me find the right car within my budget, and everything was explained to me in great detail so I always felt confident I was getting the best deal possible.
I received regular updates throughout the whole process and Connor was a massive help with all of the paperwork, making everything straightforward and stress-free.
The car itself is absolutely incredible, and on collection day Connor took the time to give me a full tutorial, making sure I understood all of the high-tech features and how everything worked.
I genuinely couldn’t fault the service I received. Massive thanks to Connor for all his help and support — I’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a new car!
Wasted My Time
I spent a long time completing the profile for the sale of my car. I was as honest as possible , pointing out the faults as I did not expect to get a great valuation on my car. When I eventually spoke to someone at Motorway they pointed out that I told them that the engine management light was on and that because of this they couldn’t sell the car. If I had known this at the start or when I pointed it out I could have saved myself about two hours.
Hassle free way to sell a car

Resulted in a quick sale and at a good price. Dealer communication was good, delivery and payment organised efficiently.
Appalling customer service post auction
The pre sale and auction went well. After that it was an utter disaster. I was given a collection date of 4th August. That morning I received a message on the app telling me that the car would be collected between 8am and 5pm. During the day, having not heard from the collecting company called SDL, I rang them and was now told between 2pm and 4pm. At about 4pm I received a call from the collecting driver telling me he was assigned on the Motorway app to collect my car and would be arriving about 5.30pm.
When the driver arrived, he checked his app only to find that my vehicle has been removed from the app without his knowledge. I checked my app to see a message telling me that the collection had been cancelled and would be rescheduled. That was not on the app earlier in the day.
Neither the driver or I had ANY other form of communication by email, phone, etc to tell us what was happening and WHY the collection cancelled. . The driver checked his app before he started his journey from London to me in Hertfordshire. He had a wasted 90 minute journey in his own vehicle plus a return journey home. I rang Motorway who said the finance office was closed as it was after 5.30pm and there was nothing she could do. We called the car buyer who was prepared to continue with the purchase with the driver having reviewed the car but that was not possible because without the app the driver could not do the appraisal. The driver said he had previously completed appraisals after the finance office had closed with the agreement of the buyer. He just needed the app. WHO REMOVED THE APP?
The next morning I looked at the Motorway app and it said ' your car has been collected' I rang Motorway and told them the car had NOT been collected. I was told it was the transport department that would deal with it. I asked to be put through to the transport department and was told THEY DIDN'T HAVE A PHONE NUMBER and that all the operator could do was to email them internally and ask them to call me. They didn't call me.
I made two more calls to Motorway that day, each time I was palmed off with 'we can only send the transport department an email'. Each time I was told they would mark it as URGENT. Every one of these calls was completely ignorned by Motorway.
Meanwhile I rang the collecting agency TWICE. Once Again I got palmed off with 'we are extremely busy and cannot give you a new collection date but it won't be this week. I explained that it was URGENT as I was going on holiday next week. I was promised a call back. No call back received.
On Thursday 6th, I rang SDL at 8.10am and remonstrated with them for not calling me back. Again the man said 'they were extremely busy' and it would have to wait until he had a driver in the area. I forcefully but politely told him that it had to be collected that day, Thursday or Friday. He refused to commit to that.
Motorway didn't open till 9am when I then rang them AGAIN and said I wanted another collection agency to be instructed to pick up the car as SDL were not going to do so. Once again it was we will email the transport department to contact you urgently. That now makes it five calls to Motorway and three to SDL and NO-ONE has called me back.
Shortly afterwards I then checked my app again which now said Thursday was the pick up day. I rang SDL again and they said that someone would be with me mid morning. Finally, just before 2pm another driver attended and completed the appraisal and the sale went through.
I found the attitude of both Motorway and SDL to show utter contempt to me the customer. Who decided to cancel the first collection time without reference to me the seller or to the poor driver who was instructed to collect and then removed from the job wothout being told until he arrived at my house?
The dismissive attitude of SDL showed no consideration to the fact that I had wasted two and a half days of my time, had to cancel two planned appointments to fit in with them, only to find they didn't complete the job. Not to mention the arrogant attitude of 'we are very busy, it is a glitch in the system' and you just have to accept it.
As for Mororway, your post auction customer service is appalling. How can you possibly justify ignoring FIVE calls to yourself, five times being palmed off to the 'Transport department' and five times that the Transport department totally ignored these calls which were according to the operator, asking them to call me as a matter of urgency?
Oh and how can you run a business where your phone operators cannot PHONE the transport department because they don't have a phone number for them and are instructed to email them? Or are the operators lying and they are under instructions not to put complaining customers through on the phone? Either way it shows absolutely no respect for an aggrieved customer. I have given this review one star because of the pre auction service only.
Great experience
Great experience, all went as expected. Managed 20% more the well known instant online buy site. Car collected on time. Motorway dealt with the payment within seconds of collection. Very pleased with the motorway communication.
It was an excellent experience and…
It was an excellent experience and one I would have no hesitation in doing again.
Complete rip off - do not use!
First the positive: the process of placing the ad, taking photos and the communictaion etc is very good. BUT, the whole system is a complete rip off and nothing short of a scam. 1) They give you an initial valuation (in my case £7700) but this apparaently is based upon it being in pristine condition. My car is 7 years old and no car that is 7 years old is EVER in pristine condition. Hence, they knocked £500 off for a couple of very minor scraches, which were nothing beyond what you'd expect for a car that age. 2) At auction the best offer was then £6400. This would suggest that their initial valuation was clearly too high. 3) Then comes the dealer! They arrive and do a full check, drive etc. They initially say that there is more superficial damage than I stated. I asked him to point out where and after pointing to the scratches I'd already photographed, pointed to just one other scratch that you cannot see unless you have a magnifiying glass! They then state that the timing belt will probably need replacing. I said that it had recently been servived and MOTd and this had not come up or ever been mentioned. He said that they normally need replacing anyway between 60 and 80000 miles, to which I pointed out that their offer was based upon a car with 79000 miles! Finally offered me £4500 and I told them where to go.
Delighted with the outcome
First time I’ve used Motorway. Wasn’t sure what to expect. Decent valuation, much better than WeBuyAnyCar or direct trade in, sold at valuation on first auction, contact made by purchaser to arrange collection, great communication on day of collection to keep me updated on arrival time, very professional inspection, immediate payment and V5 change. Couldn’t have been smoother and extremely happy with service. Motorway provided lots of help and support if required (it wasn’t but good to know it was there).
Simple & hassle free
Process was simple & explained in depth, including options when vehicle did not sell. Pickup & payment were straightforward & completely hassle free. Much better price than a similar company that may well purchase any vehicle offered.
Selling process straightforward with Motorway
Selling process straightforward with Motorway. (Be honest about condition to stop the possibility of a reduction in offer later). No problem for us. Car sold for the mutually accepted valuation. Hilton Garage Derby arranged collection at an agreeable time and date and arrived on time. Inspection went without a hitch as did the transfer of the money to clear finance etc. Thanks must go to Zany, the collection driver who was very friendly and efficient in his duties and sorted the finances before taking the vehicle away. Time taken around 30 minutes.

My first time using motorway and I have got to say it was so easy and very quick. Once my car went up a buyer called and wanted to collect the following day. Collection was no hassle and money transferred instantly
Fantastic service
Fantastic service & car sold within hours !!! I'm not usually given to using the internet for large sale items and tbh it was a bit confusing (on my part), Zoe at Motorway made the whole process so much easier to understand, took plenty of time and patience and we managed to get our car listed and sold within a few hours for exactly what we wanted for it. i would certainly recommend Zoe to anyone else out there struggling with technology to get the job done. Thanks very much.
Simple and Quick
Loaded the app, followed the instructions, car went to auction same day. At 15:30 the following day I was advised of highest bidder which I was pleased to accept. Just had my car collected by the buyer two days after it sold. Payment direct to account. No issues.
