If you want the worst “assistant” you could ever imagine, you’ve found him

If you’re curious to see how a rental company can turn a simple trip into a joke, On Tour Campervans (Edinburgh) is the gold standard — in the worst possible way.

I paid £20/day for their so-called “Diamond Insurance – covers all situations (as long as you drive within the law)”. Guess what? One flat tyre in Skye (invoice £120), and suddenly “covers all situations” means covers nothing at all.

Highlights of this circus:
• The tyre was already worn out when I picked up the van (I have photos, and even the mechanic confirmed it).
• When I first met the guy running this, I was helping another couple who struggled with English. Instead of showing basic respect, he told me to “get out with my van, this is not a party”. I actually have his email apology afterwards as proof.
• I fought by email again and again to obtain a copy of the insurance contract I paid for. The truth is: this contract simply does not exist. It’s pure scam.
• When I asked about the insurance, he refused to pay, and pushed me back to IndieCampers to deal with it.

So let’s be clear: you pay premium for “maximum coverage”, you get zero coverage, and the only “service” you get is being spoken to like dirt. Honestly, this man is the perfect example of someone who should never work with other human beings.

If you want the worst “assistant” you could ever imagine, you’ve found him. A flat tyre turned into a scam, a fight, and a ruined holiday vibe.

There are plenty of companies in Scotland who understand both customer service and honesty. This one clearly doesn’t.

we have various options clients can choose from when renting their van to not pay so much deposit - or indeed any and our top level is Diamond which does in fact cover most situations. The exceptions would be if you were putting the van into danger - as you did. - driving in a catagory two storm . This was irresponsble and unlike all our other clients that were sheltering . The Police and met office stringly advised driving in that storm and you somehow just kept going thinking we would pay for anything that happened ! clearly and obviously not .

The vans are all checked pre hires and no van would have been sent out with bad tyres .

at the start of your trip when picking up you decided to interfere with another client and their hire which did not help at all and you were asked to depart as your check out had been done, You had a very arrogant manner and for sure one of the worst client experiences we have ever had !

Our terrible experience with this campervan…

Our experience with this campervan company in Scotland was utterly unacceptable. From a safety perspective, the vehicle was not roadworthy: a dangerously worn front tire (claimed to be “within legal minimum”), misaligned steering, and partially broken front lights that made night driving virtually impossible. These issues are serious and put customers at risk.

On top of that, the vehicle showed clear signs of neglect: the passenger door didn’t close properly, constant vibrations and noises, a tilted driver’s seat, leaking water tank, loose wires inside the cabin, broken dashboard elements, and even basic features like interior lights without batteries. The van was handed over dirty (upholstery, fridge, kitchenware), forcing us to buy our own cookware, yet we were still required to return it cleaner than when received.

Customer service was equally poor: unclear pickup hours (the website said until 6 pm, but we were scolded for arriving at 4:30 pm due to “staff shortage”), and, worst of all, openly racist remarks from staff (“always your people”), which is absolutely unacceptable.

In short: an unsafe, poorly maintained, dirty vehicle and disgraceful customer service. This company should not be operating under these conditions.

I don’t give 1 star because the owner had a point when he said “you are paying for the cheapest, what did you expect”. So 1 extra star for the life lesson.

we cannot recall such an incident and have checked our Road side assistance watts app for reports that a tyre was dangerous or any other issues. unfortunatley if you dont report it we cant help whilst on hire.
we certainly never would intentionally send our any vans that were considered dangerous of course ! they all have stringent checks by qualified mechanics.
certainly none of our staff are racist and we are a multi cultural business ! I think you misunderstood there .

This is a scam

This is a scam - DO NOT BOOK!

Booked via Airbnb 4 months before arrival - informed them 3 times arrival time. 2 hours before arrival they told me we could not pick up at that time and was left late evening with no place to stay, no company phone to call and no one to help us out. Only thing we were told was to cancel the booking. Don’t book anything from this company or your holiday is at risk!

well with 3000 clients travelled with us in 2025 I dont think we can be considered a scam . unfortunatley we cannot open our check in 24 hours because you need to arrive within the time limits of when we have our depot open . we dont make exceptions for people that arrrive after these times .

Disappointing van, worse service

At arrival they made us pay additional insurance fees and a cleaning service, that we had already paid. They gave us a van far worse than promised (from 2005). Radio broken, brakes working not properly. Kitchen equipment was dirty, broken and no place for storage than the fridge.

When returning the van they made us pay for extra milage, also we had already paid for unlimited milage when booking. They also wanted to charge us for a broken pan that was already broken.

Not recommended at all

Updated April 2026: they answered 8 months later with a fistful of lies. Nearly as disappointing as their van.

hello. No one made you pay any insurance fee;s !!!! that not honest . Its an option to take out a daily waiver of the deposit or you can pay a refundable deposit clearly you didnt understand the options so sorry for that .

all of the other things you mention should have been reported using our 24 hour watts app service and in this case we could have compensated for anything missing or dirty . we dont have any record of you reporting these things .

we offer 150 miles per. day in all hires and if you go over you pay the difference, this is made very clear on al contracts and adverts

3000 clients chose to travel with us in 2025 and 98 % were very happy . most dont leave reviews but we can be sure that everyone who tends to leave bad reviews - does . its the world we live in . cancel culture .
No matter how hard we work - how great our prices are. - how much we loist all the options ands rules in the adverts we just will never please some people . Its in their nature to try and cancel us

Our experience with On Tour Campervans…

Our experience with On Tour Campervans fell far short of what was promised. From the very beginning, we encountered multiple issues that affected our safety and comfort:

The camping gas system seemed dangerous and unreliable. The camper was not clean: dirty coffee in the coffee maker and mold on the curtains. The rearview mirror was loose. The steering wheel was misaligned (it had to be slightly turned to go straight). The wooden panel near the sink was not properly fixed and moved around.

Additionally, there was an engine warning light on as soon as we picked up the camper, which remained lit throughout the entire trip, as seen in the attached photo.

When returning the camper, the owner inspected every inch in an excessively meticulous and rough manner. He threw the floor mats on the ground, saying, "This is dirty" (even though we had cleaned them), and after a tense argument, he demanded £20 from us. He also blamed us for a scratch that was already there when we picked it up. Fortunately, we had the Diamond all-risk insurance, so they couldn’t charge us any additional fees.

we clean and inspect all vans when they go out and yes also when they come back . its nornal operation.
if something was not right at the start or during hire we ask you to report it - then we have a log of it and can even deal with it during hire.
if you dont report it then we dont know about it Im afraid

we do provide two cookers in all vans in case one has an issue .

We have rented a campvan for a week

We have rented a campvan for a week. During the first day of the rent we have noticed that the car slips a bit. We have checked tires during the stop. They were warn out. We have contacted support. Support said that they know they are due date and maybe should be changed , but they will do nothing because they are ok according the UK law. The side of the tires had no profile and started to crack. When we wrote that we will go to police station to check, the person from WhatsApp stated to be extremely aggressive. Started to threaten us that they will cancel the hire and will not give refund. We wrote that ok and we will stop by police station then and have a legal documentation on the tires. The person on WhatsApp said that they cancel the hire and will refund the rest of the days. We should bring the car by 11 next day. Meanwhile on WhatsApp the person has continue to harass me. „you foreigners come in the UK and inforce your EU laws“ „you are nasty person“ „you are not British you know nothing “ When I have asked if they can name their names so I know whom I am talking to? The person didn’t provide an information (just wrote he is James, no info on surname or on the holding position within the company). When I have asked to have a personal meeting during handover of the car I got such a reply „No one wants to meet you given your stance“. The whole situation is extremely doggie. They person on WhatsApp is not helping. They rent out obviously not safe van. (There’s a difference between safety and law). They denied to replace tires, van or provide any visible support. And continue to give out of line comments. On the parking during handover I have noticed that some cars have problems with tires as well. Girls that are working on the parking lot and cleaning/preparing cars for the next customer could not help either. Their „boss“ basically forbid them to talk to me. He wrote me stop to harass his staff, I was polite to girls and asked if they can ask their boss to give handover documentation. They were helpful. 4 hours later the WhatsApp person sent me a couple of images that he has removed the tires and they are complaint to the law. Who knows what tired he took to pictures. The whole experience out of the line. Starting from the renting out potentially dangerous vehicles to the the way they handle the support! Gaslighting and pining everything on us.

we do run a very busy. - very popular. - budget campervan company and we take pride in what we do .
when there is an issue we resolve it . we also have to accept that customers have opinons and they are not always acurate - and this can happen with tyres .

given how many vans we have and how many hires we do we change allot of tyres and so no tyre can be that old . but we dont change them before they have their full life of course or we would be changing them every day . in UK the lower limit is 1.6 mm and we change them at 2mm .
