TERRIBLE! I have only just taken out my car insurance with RAC. I wanted to change my named drivers because they wanted (and did) to increase my premium for a no blame no claim accident that he made a claim for a lorry driver who drove into his parked car. I could not get any sense from Live chat.
Could not speak to anyone. They had the cheek to ask if I will automatically renew next year. I CERTAINLY WILL NOT. and will not recommend them.

Easy to renew my car insurance with RAC and the cost was very competitive with hardly any increase from last year unlike other insurance companies.

I bought a policy to insure my car5or6 days ago, by mistake, I canceled the policy soon after, but on checking my bank statement you have still taken the payment, can you please help.
I gave the one star revue out of frustration with the web site, It may be because of my lack of computer skills, but as soon as I could speak to a human, everything was sorted out quickly, all is fine now, Thank you.

AVOID RAC - APPALLING - do not insure your vehicles with RAC or take out breakdown insurance as the cancellation and unexpected fees are shocking! After 6 years, my policy renewed on 19.07.26 and today 25.08.26 - 38 days later, I rang the RAC to inform them that I scrapped my car today.
They said I would have to pay them £192.34! The breakdown of this is £45 cancellation fee, which I was aware of + £45.00 intermediary services fee (which is applied at the start of the policy - had no idea about this as a non-refundable. Apparently this relates to a no claims bonus being factored in, breakdown services cost and motor legal etc ).
Out of this sum they want to charge me £136.04 for the 38 days insurance, which comes to £3.58 per day! My policy for the year was a total of £403.80 split into 12 monthly payments, which comes to £1.11 per day. I said I would be happy to pay that amount (and I knew of the cancellation fee) so my total would be much lower.
They said that my yearly price came with discounts but I asked why I am now being penalised and having to pay nearly 4 times my daily price, which feels like a heavy penalty to pay for paying by direct debit.
REALLY UNHAPPY with their service which I feel is unethical and not transparent at all. ALL this information should be visible on the first page of our agreement and the first screen of their portal.
They say that each renewal carries these costs but if I have been with them for 6 years and kept the same policy number in that time, why are they treating me like a new customer for each renewal on the same policy. And in that 6 years, the only change has been one change of address.
The resolution person I spoke to said all they can do is take off £45.00 cancellation charge but I am following this through as a complaint. No doubt I will receive a Final Response* letter that still insists I am liable. When I told the person that I will cancel my Direct debit today as I don't want big payments drawn on my account, she said she can hold off the date due but then send it to "Collections"- which would mean that I would get charged fees by a collection agency too. I said that they needed to send me a bill for the outstanding amount so that I can see it, before they do anything else. And finally, they agreed to email me a breakdown, detailing costs.
Thank you RAC, for adding insult to injury. If I had not challenged the mention of a collection agency, I could have ended up with a bill escalating even more and bailiffs or collection agents at my door.
Once we get a Final Response letter, if we are not happy, we can write to the Financial Ombudsman and take our complaint to them. The irony is that RAC automatically get charged £750 each time this happens. I don't think I will be feeling sad about that.
Also RAC your online system for customers is awful - why do we have to log in to different sections eg insurance portal, once we are logged in. And our documents should be clearly visible and listed as 'Certificate of insurance', 'Your agreement' etc. Using saved passwords on my laptop, I often cannot get access and once in, my documents are not easily accessible. I have not even found my certificate of insurance.
