Report My Loss is used by thousands of people each month to securely and conveniently submit details of lost items, from phones and laptops to jewellery and bikes. It can surprise people that Report My Loss is not publicly funded and why there is a fee for the service. Lost property reporting is not a statutory duty of policing, so many constabularies no longer undertake it. When you create a new loss report, it is placed on a secure database (the police NMPR system). The lost item can then be searched by police and lost property offices nationally, increasing the chances of recovered items being identified and returned to you. In the event of needing to make an insurance claim, Report My Loss certificates can normally be used in place of police loss report references (which many forces have phased out). Report My Loss should only be used for accidental losses. If a theft has taken place, this should instead be reported to the police force for the area in which the crime took place. They will be able to provide you with a crime reference number.

This is outrageous, why on earth would I pay?

This is ridiculous. I tried to contact my local police station to enquire about lost items and all they did was tell me to fill out the form on this website. I went through it all then it tried to charge me £6 for submitting the report. What the hell?! Why would I spend any money just to tell the police I lost something?? I just wanted to speak to my local station but they are not contactable. It is outrageous. I'm appalled a public service is ripping people off like this

Dear Nora,

It can surprise people that Report My Loss is not publicly funded and why there is a fee for the service. The police directed you to Report My Loss because it’s the only database that links directly through to their systems, making it easier for them to identify you as the owner of the item if it is found. Lost property reporting is not a statutory duty of policing, so many constabularies no longer undertake it. Some have, in the past, chosen to subsidise Report My Loss reports as an extra benefit to their communities, but that landscape is always changing, and for this reason, the areas with free reports also change. That’s why, when you indicated your location of loss, you were advised that there was a fee for that area.

We would kindly ask you to please consider changing or removing your 1* review, as fee subsidisation is outside of our control.

If you have any questions, we would be happy to help. Please email support@reportmyloss.com

Kind regards,
Support Team, RML

Hello, if you are unhappy with the ReportMyLoss service then please could you also provide further details on this as we are not sure why you have chosen to leave a 1 star review and would appreciate the chance to address any issues you may have. For general support related questions please can we ask that you direct your enquiry through to our support team at support.recipero.com or by emailing support@reportmyloss.com

We’re not aware of any similar sites to the ReportMyLoss service, it is the only one we know of integrated directly with police systems. It can be very difficult to determine the odds of a return as the circumstances of each loss can greatly effect the chances of an item being recovered and handed in to the police. For example the chances of recovering an item that fell out of a pocket on the high street are considerably different to an item lost as a result of been accidentally dropped over the side of a boat.

What we can say is that the chances of repatriation will be higher using ReportMyLoss than with other systems because of its integration with the police NMPR property intelligence tool making it a quick and simple process for police staff to run searches to try and match recovered property, as opposed to any other sites which would not have that functionality.
