Booked a prepaid rental with Routes Car…

Booked a prepaid rental with Routes Car Rental and had a very disappointing experience.

I traveled a long distance to pick up the vehicle from their YYZ International Airport location at 3035 Orlando Dr, Mississauga, ON L4V 1R4, Canada, only to be told at the counter that I could not rent the car because I hold a G2 license. This restriction was not clearly communicated during the booking process; otherwise, I would never have made the reservation.

As a result, I received no vehicle, lost time and travel expenses, and my refund request was denied with repeated references to their “non-refundable” policy.

I have previously rented vehicles from Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, National, Dollar, and Sixt using the same G2 license and never faced this issue before. I arrived at the location on time and fully complied with the reservation requirements, but the vehicle was still denied at the counter.

I understand companies have policies, but customers should be clearly informed about license restrictions before payment is taken. Overall, this was a very frustrating experience and an extremely poor customer service resolution.

I am still respectfully requesting a refund for a service that was never provided.

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service. Their staff’s error resulted in me getting a parking ticket. They refused to assist and even called me a liar. Meanwhile their staff were lying about what happened. Pretty upsetting and actually shocking.

Routes is not to be trusted

This company doesn’t rate a one-star based on their total failure of customer service. They falsely accused me of driving a car and leaving it out of state despite not even being in the state where the car was left, and after it was returned locally where it was picked up. They have no interest in facts, and every response from them is the same lie. They took nearly $700 without cause, and I can’t suggest strongly enough, unless you want headaches, steer clear of them, especially in Atlanta.

International drivers avoid this company

Please do not hire a car from this company if you are from the UK. I found them on a price comparison site, and it appeared to be a very good deal. I checked and double-checked the insurance information, and I couldn't see any requirement to have additional insurance other than the one that was already provided by my credit card company. However, when I arrived at the Car Hire Centre without even looking at my insurance policy, the man said, "No, you have to buy the insurance through us if you have an international licence." I have since been back through their website, and I cannot see that anywhere. I also checked the Priceline website, which is the company that I purchased this deal from, and I can't see anything on there apart from "Check insurance requirements with the provider".

It wouldn't be so bad if the insurance costs were the standard fees charged by car rental companies, but $400 for 6 days is just for the insurance, not the car hire. Absolutely shocking. There was no effort to resolve the issue at the counter. The guy simply said, "If you don't want it, I'll just cancel the reservation and let Priceline know." I said, "Okay, no problem." He even suggested that I go to the airport, as he said it would be cheaper up there, and do you know what? He was absolutely correct. I went to the airport, went straight to the Budget desk, and picked up a nice shiny new car for $140 for a week's car hire, no need to have insurance.

What I also find incredibly frustrating and downright deviant behaviour is that the cost of the additional insurance is not shown anywhere on their entire website. How can a consumer make an informed decision before actually booking the car hire? When you look on Enterprise or Avis website it clearly shows how much these things are and whether you need them or not, or whether they are simply an optional extra. This is sheer profiteering.

Now Priceline are saying that there are no refunds, so the man in the car rental hire centre was either wrong or a liar. Avoid at all costs if you are an international driver.

Attention

Attention! Attention! Attention!!!!!

Warning! Warning! Warning!!!!!
Never rent from Routes Car Rental!!!
At Rabat airport (Morocco), they charged me an exorbitant amount for a tiny scratch on the car, and when I complained to their management, they sent a fake accident report and a fake garage invoice. Luckily, I took a video and photos of the car that contradict their bogus report.

Very bad experience with Routes Car…

Very bad experience with Routes Car Rental Toronto.

Price displayed at booking: ~315 CAD.
Final result:

* Imposed insurance on site: +300 CAD,
* Deposit: +500 CAD,

* Then another 249 CAD withdrawn without authorization for a so-called “Border Crossing Fee”.

The worst part? I had INFORMED the employee that I was going to Montreal/Ottawa for the weekend. Afterwards, they said I “didn’t inform” them and charged my card directly.

Catastrophic customer service:

* 30-minute wait on every call,
* No manager available,
* Finances unavailable,
* No real help.

Very poor communication, exorbitant fees, zero transparency, and an extremely stressful experience for tourists.

I will dispute the payments with my bank and file complaints with consumer protection agencies in Ontario.

Be very careful before renting from them.

Long and thorough review from a lived experience

I wish I had read the reviews before booking with Routes (Europcar). I ended up wasting more than two hours at their office before returning to the airport and renting with Alamo instead, at a lower price and with none of the complications. Luckily, I had not prepaid my reservation.

The advertised low prices are very misleading. In my experience, additional conditions and charges were introduced only once I arrived at the counter, leaving customers feeling trapped and pressured to accept them.

Here is what happened:

* I booked a rental through Expedia with “unlimited mileage.” At the counter, I was informed that because “geographical restrictions may apply,” I had to pay an additional fee to drive into another province. This important restriction was never made clear during booking and was only interpreted for me on the spot.

* After agreeing to the extra fee, I was then told that my rental would no longer include unlimited mileage and would instead be limited to 200 km/day, with extra charges for additional kilometers. In other words, I would pay more money to receive fewer benefits.

* I declined their insurance because my Bank of America credit card already provides rental coverage. Strangely, none of my credit cards would work on their payment terminal. I was then told that if I purchased their insurance, they could process the payment using my non-US credit card. That interaction made me extremely uncomfortable and made the scam clear.

* Be aware that the Routes/Europcar office is located outside the airport, unlike the major rental companies. Once you take their shuttle there, you are effectively stuck unless you pay again for transportation back to the airport. This is especially difficult if you are traveling with family or multiple pieces of luggage, and it creates additional pressure to accept the unexpected charges.

* Their shuttle service was also unreliable and did not appear to operate on a consistent schedule. Do not rely on it if you are short on time or trying to catch a flight.

* Another surprise: they wanted to place a $1,500 hold on my credit card. By comparison, Alamo only held $400.

In the end, I chose not to proceed with the rental. I returned to the airport, rented immediately from Alamo at a lower total price, paid with the Bank of America credit card they claimed did not work, and had a smooth experience from start to finish.

Read the other reviews carefully before booking. Many customers who prepaid online reported difficulties obtaining refunds after encountering similar issues at pickup.

Now you know.

I prepaid for a car rental booking…

I prepaid for a car rental booking through Orbitz/Expedia for pickup in Orlando (14 May–20 May).
At pickup, Routes Car Rental demanded additional mandatory charges of approximately $65 per day that were not clearly disclosed during booking.
I refused to accept the vehicle because the rental terms were materially different from what I paid for.
I never took possession of the car.
Despite this, the company retained my payment and is attempting to classify it as a no-show and charge cancellation fees.
I am currently disputing the charge through my credit card issuer.

Don't rent from @Routes Car Rental in…

Don't rent from @Routes Car Rental in Orlando. I got what I thought was a great deal on a small SUV for 4 days through Expedia. $62.64 /4 day. Too good to be true- it was. First thing they told me it was Florida Law that I had to rent their SunPass at $14.95 per day (I had brought my own EZ pass) that I would be double charged and there would be penalties. Next- my proof of insurance card was not good enough. So they wanted to charge $190 for insurance that I already had. There was a lot of back and fourth while my husband, at home found the declaration page from our insurance (Don't leave home without it). I finally capitulated and said, "Alright I will pay the $60 for the SunPass that I do not need, but you know I, when I write my review, I will tell everyone what a scam you are running-- there is no Law that says we have to rent a SunPass from you". That is when the manager denied my rental. So I had to go back to the airport and rent from a Reputable company (@FoxRent a car- 5 stars) who never asked my for proof of insurance- only that I had insurance and said fine if I wanted to use my own EZ pass. Now I am struggling to get my money back because apparently non- refundable from @Expedia includes when you are refused service! Moral-- Just go to the reputable company to begin with like @Fox RentA Car . Skip the "money savers" like @Routes Car Rental and @Expedia you will save money in the long run.

STILL have't returned our $250 deposit

I rented a car from Routes Car Rental in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Car was rented on 2-23-26 and returned on 3-3-26. We paid a $250 security deposit and have tried numerous times to find out when it will be returned. I have filed a question/complaint with them six times now, and each time I get an automated response from Routes Customer Service SMS (786) 746-7998, it includes an apology and a note that they will are checking on the delay. The last times they said they were forwarding to their administrative department and will email me when my refund is being processed, but STILL no refund. We had a horrible time renting the car in the first place and should have walked away, but didn't have any other options. I have now also filed a complaint with the better business bureau. And the next step will be for us to dispute the charge with our credit card company. Help us get our refund back.

DO NOT USE ROUTES CAR RENTAL!!

If I could give Routes car rental negative stars I would and I normally don’t leave a bad review and give grace for one offs but this experience was terrible. They misrepresent their pricing, the wait times to call are astronomical. Sometimes they just never answer. The wait times for the shuttle from the airport are over 2 hours. Looking at reviews this is pretty consistent across the board.

The price seems like a great deal until you get to the desk after 2+ hours waiting for a shuttle to from the airport and numerous unanswered calls to the rental building. They will then let you know that the initial cost is only for the reservation and then will charge you hundreds more for the actual car while making it seem like they’re giving you a deal.

Heaven forbid you have a rock hit the window. They will charge your card for the claim without going through any insurance then make you fight to get reimbursed. Communication is terrible all the way across the company from phone calls to in person. -10/10 would never recommend. Stay far far away from this company.

The staff treated me like I was an…

The staff treated me like I was an imposition and the service was slow. The refused to give me a receipt when I returned car early and they did not refund any of the charges they put on my credit card. I had requested the car for 4 days and I returned it on the same day, 7.5 hours later because I did not want to have to return it early on the day my flight was leaving. They said they would charge me for the day only and instead they charged for 4 full days... Trying to get someone in claims department on the phone is a joke. They say press 6 for claims department and they it disconnects the phone. When I selected 5 for customer care and waited on the line for 25 minutes, they were not able to help either. They instructed me to email customercare at routes.ca.
