In Costa Adeje, Tenerife, we were sent a bill for damage 24 hrs after we returned the car - the damage was already there - and we have taken time stamped photos but Sixt are still ignoring the facts and have charged me £600. totally ignored our photos. the damage was minimal and pre-existing.
absolute scam from SIXT
never go with them

Payed for a car, landed went to the desk the didn’t have my car because they gave it to someone else, then tried to convince me to buy another 1, bad company

Reply from SIXT España
Every single person (including us) that booked a car with this company was told they could not have the car that they booked on arrival. No reason or apologies were given.
They will then put pressure on you to try and get you to pay more money for another car and extras.

Complete Scam & Misleading Service – Stay Away from Sixt Barcelona
This was one of the worst rental experiences I’ve ever had.
As long as they do not answer my e-mails, I decided to share my story here.
I booked a Mercedes GLC, but when I arrived, they tried to give me a bright Tiffany-colored Volvo, which is not even remotely in the same category. When I refused, they told me the booking was non-refundable, meaning I was basically forced to take a car I never wanted.
When I asked for a proper replacement in the same class, they demanded an extra €800–€900, which is absolutely outrageous.
Then comes the real “business model”…
During the handover, the employee did not properly inspect the car and clearly tried to rush the process. It honestly felt like he was avoiding letting me properly document the condition of the vehicle. I still took a video, but unfortunately it didn’t capture the lower bumper — which I later found out had pre-existing damage.
After returning the car, I was charged €589 for that exact damage, and on top of that, they are holding my €500 deposit.
So let’s summarize:
• Wrong car provided
• Forced to accept it due to “non-refundable” policy
• Asked to pay €800–€900 extra for a proper car
• Charged €589 for damage I didn’t cause
• €500 deposit still not returned
This doesn’t feel like a mistake — it feels like a well-practiced scheme, especially targeting tourists who can’t easily fight back.
I’ve actually had a similar experience with them years ago and made the mistake of thinking things had improved. They clearly haven’t.

I hired a car from Sixt in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. I’d opted for an automatic. They didn’t have any available. The choice was either a manual or paying over 500 euros extra for a different model. I’d chosen a BMW 1 Series. That wasn’t available, nor was there anything of equivalent standard. Then came the second pitfall. I’d taken out comprehensive insurance cover. I showed them the proof of this. However, I was told I’d have to pay an extra 300 euros. I refused and decided to take a taxi instead. Lost money, no car. This is a prime example of a total rip-off!
I posted this review last Monday, 13 April. Sixt responded immediately, asking me to send the details by email. I thought, ‘This will be sorted out.’ I sent everything straight away by email. It is now Wednesday afternoon, 15 April, and still no response. My only hope is that the money I paid will be refunded. In any case, I don’t have a car at the moment. I paid for a taxi for the outward journey and will be taking another taxi shortly. You have been warned about these practices.

SCAM COMPANY – THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY
Sixt Barcelona is an absolute nightmare. This is not just bad service — this is a systematic way of taking money from customers.
They charged me for a “scratch” on the car that I did NOT make. Completely fabricated or pre-existing damage — and of course, they blame you after you return the car when you have no way to defend yourself.
When I tried to resolve it, they hid behind their favorite line: “You signed the contract.” That’s it. No investigation, no accountability, no interest in the truth. Just a cold, robotic excuse to take your money.
And here’s the worst part — this is the THIRD time this has happened to me with them. The same exact situation happened 8–10 years ago. I made the mistake of thinking maybe they changed. They didn’t. If anything, they perfected this scheme.
It honestly feels like they target tourists and foreigners on purpose, knowing very well that people won’t stay long enough to fight them legally.
This is not customer service — this is a business model based on exploiting people.
DO NOT RENT FROM SIXT BARCELONA.
Unless you’re ready to be falsely accused and charged for damages you didn’t cause.

We travel frequently and always rent a car from Sixt. Firstly, it's easy to book almost anywhere we travel. Secondly, the pickup process is always clear and fast, with no extra charges or hidden fees. Thirdly, returns are quick and easy.
There were some extra charges, but I drove into an eco-zone myself 🙈.
But Sixt helped me fix it out quickly and saved some money.

DO NOT RENT WITH THIS COMPANY, they have taken 889 euros from my credit card without authorisation and are claiming for fake damage. I will be counter claiming via my credit card company immediately and will never use them again. Short sighted given how much we used them in the past:

After 10+ years as a Platinum member and more than 8 rentals at this same location without any issues, this was by far my worst experience with Sixt.
In the past, service at Malaga Airport was excellent, professional, respectful, and solution-oriented. That has clearly changed.
On my latest visit, I was suddenly refused a car due to an alleged “block list” from 15 years ago, something that has never been a problem before, despite my consistent rental history, including luxury vehicles, at this exact location.
Even worse: my wife, who has her own Platinum account, credit card, and clean record, was also refused simply because she was with me. Completely unreasonable.
The staff (Irena and Elena) showed zero empathy, no professionalism, and no willingness to help or find a solution. The way we were treated was disrespectful and unacceptable.
Only Emanuel remained polite and professional, thank you for that.
After spending thousands of euros with Sixt, this is not how loyal customers should be treated. I will not return, and neither will my family or friends.
Thankfully, Avis handled everything professionally and got me on the road without any issues.
Avoid Sixt Malaga Airport. Official complaint will be filed.

Damage claim scam! ...in my opinion!
Disgusted with SIXT Gran Canaria and will never use this company again.
We had to suddenly return home after only 2 days of a 5 day holiday in late December, as my father was dying.
We had literally driven the car 30mins from airport to the private underground car park at the accommodation and back again some 36hrs later.
I returned the car to SIXT and asked representative if he wanted to inspect the car with me. He declined.
On collection, again rather than inspecting the car with you, SIXT now send you a link to a website where you are supposed to cross reference and check every bit of damage from the often dodgy pictures on the website within 30mins of collection.
The car we were supplied with had more than 15 separate areas of damage, so this was practically impossible. To be honest, with hind sight, I should have returned the car at that point, .
Having returned home, the same day I get an email saying they had charged me the full 5 days rate of £191 for the 2 days. The following day I receive an email claiming that there were 2 new areas of damage on the car and asking me to fill in a response.
I disputed this claim several times and explained the points I have mentioned above. They then sent me a valuation of 203 euro to repair the 'damage'; Strangely just under the 300 euro deposit I had to leave on collection. Strangely they did not take the money from this deposit, but kept sending me links to pay online.
I reiterated the fact they had no proof the alleged damage occur during our rental period again, but their claims department kept sending me deadlines to pay, to which I replied to in the same vein. I also asked to see time stamped photos of the damage on the vehicle before and after our rental, which they did not provide.
I recently received a final demand for payment also now threatening debt collectors and additional charges if not settled by the 7th April.
So sadly I relented and gave up fighting it!
It was just not worth my time to continue fighting it on the principle for 200 euro, so unfortunately their threats of incurring additional charges worked!
I do feel however this is just a scam, the company really had no proof that the damage did not occur after I left it in their car park at the airport and them emailing me the following day.
I had used SIXT on several occasions in the past, but will certainly not be in the future. So I hope they feel the loss of business was worth 200 euros!

Extremely disappointed with SIXT Spain. Received a 350€ damage claim after car return for a scratch I did not cause. I've sent multiple emails to dispute this with NO response for weeks. They just charged my card and ignored my concerns. This is unacceptable. I expect an immediate review of my case [Damage No. 9077111981] and a full refund.

I booked a car for a few days for €262 + a €500 deposit, which I received by email.
Support confirmed that the deposit was released correctly after I returned the car.
But now support is telling me that the package was changed at the check-in counter for some reason (not by me), and now they won't refund my €500 deposit.
The company itself changes packages that are advantageous to them, so as not to refund the deposit.

I had a very frustrating experience with Sixt during a recent rental.
After driving only around 150 km, a dashboard warning appeared indicating that engine oil needed to be added. I immediately contacted roadside assistance and followed their instructions.
I was told to go to the Sixt office in Estepona the following day. However, upon arrival, I was informed that this location could not assist (no technical service and no replacement vehicles available), and I was redirected to Marbella instead.
As a result, I had to drive approximately 150 km from the place where I was initially (La Linea, nearby Gibraltar). This led to additional costs (tolls and fuel) and several hours lost — all due to an issue that should have been prevented before the vehicle was handed over.
I formally reported this situation by email to claims-es at sixt dot com on 22 February. After more than a month, I have received no response, which is why I am now raising this complaint publicly.
While the issue was eventually resolved in Marbella, the lack of coordination, the inconvenience caused, the costs that I incurred, and the absence of any follow-up are unacceptable.
I am seeking reimbursement of my expenses and appropriate compensation for the time and inconvenience caused.
Overall, this reflects poor vehicle preparation, inefficient customer support handling, and inadequate complaint management.

The rental agent at the desk, Benjamin, would not release the car to us unless we agreed to take the optional insurance. Furthermore he lied about the cost of the additional insurance stating it was 17.95 Euros but we were charged 27.95 for totally unnecessary insurance. i do not understand why a reputable company allows their agents to destroy their reputation.

Summary: Do not risk booking with Sixt. They may confirm your reservation, approve your driver’s license, and then refuse to give you the car directly at the office — even when you are already in the middle of your trip.
Sixt disrupted my trips several times and caused me to spend extra money.
They confirmed my booking and even approved my driver’s license in advance. Naturally, I relied on that confirmation and planned my trip accordingly. But when I arrived at the office, they refused to provide the car without giving any valid explanation.
Later, customer support told me that my account had been blocked for unclear reasons. Then they said it had been unblocked. I made a new reservation, assuming the issue had finally been resolved, but after some time I received another message saying that the booking had been cancelled again.
Once again, support gave me no real explanation, and once again I had to spend extra money because of their actions.
This is not just bad service — it is completely unreliable and can ruin your trip at the worst possible moment. The refusal may happen not in advance, but directly at the rental office, when it is already too late to change your plans without losses.
I strongly do not recommend Sixt.

During a 17-day rental period, my son and his family visited for 7 days. During that time, we needed a baby seat and wanted to add an additional driver. At the time of booking, I was informed that the baby seat would cost 5.3 EUR per day and that an additional driver would cost around 5 EUR per day.
However, when I went to collect the baby seat and register my son as a driver, I was informed that both items had to be paid for the full 17-day rental period. This resulted in a total cost of 90 EUR for the baby seat and approximately 100 EUR for an additional driver.
If this had been clearly stated at the time of booking, we would have chosen a different solution. Instead, we were at the airport with a baby and had to make a quick decision. We chose to take the baby seat but decided not to add an additional driver, even though it would have made the stay more flexible.
In my view, the pricing information provided at booking did not accurately reflect the final cost, which leads to a disappointing customer experience.
After I raised the issue, the Senior Branch Manager simply referred to their rules and did not acknowledge that the pricing information was misleading from the beginning.
