I had ordered 2 adult masks on 24th…
I had ordered 2 adult masks on 24th July and was absolutely delighted with them. They were thick and soft and adjusting them was easy. I decided I needed 2 more, and ordered on Sunday and received on Tuesday which was very quick delivery. However upon opening the 2 masks, 1 of which was the same colour as I had previously (dark blue) and another slate blue, I noticed a change in quality. The softness is still there which is great, however these masks are now noticeably and considerably thinner than the originals I received in July. They are still doubled over, but no longer thicker. They currently have a sale on their website and I’m wondering whether this price drop is because they are no longer using thicker materials and whether they will continue using thinner materials from this point onwards. Very disappointed and of course concerned that their quality has now gone down. I’ve had no problems with the thicker material masks, however I do also want to feel that there is a barrier there and not a flimsy piece of doubled over material. And yes I am aware this is not PPE, but I’ve worked all they way through Covid and felt these were the best non PPE masks out there. I no longer think this.
Edit: After a fast response from the company and explanation as to why there is a difference, I have now changed the rating of this review from 2 to 4 stars. This now makes more sense as to why there is a difference in thickness but still with the same quality. Thank you for explaining in detail what the changes are and how it differs - and restoring my faith in your products!

Hi Heidi - thanks for your feedback. The Smug you purchased in July was a 200gsm, double layered (so 400 gsm) product. We received some reports the denser material for older wearers occasionally felt claustrophobic. We also received multiple requests (particularly from those in Wales where government advice is different) that they wanted a triple layered Smug. Even though we did not feel this was necessary given the weight of our Smug.
As a result, over the summer we developed a new Smug which comprises of triple layered 140gsm GOTS certified organic cotton. If you cut open the Smug you will find a third layer of light blue, antibacterial treated, water repellent cotton. The overall weight of the Smug is actually slightly more than the original at 420gsm, but it feels lighter/softer.
Moreover, we are introducing a sewn slit to the Smug (you may find this on yours at the top to one side of the nose clip) to enable it to be removed for washing and replaced if worn.
The sale on the website, is simply to reduce the remaining stock of the older Smug so we can announce all of these wonderful changes – which make the Smug, Smug. These include triple layered WHO compliant, certified antibacterial/antiviral, water repellent coating with a replaceable nose clip. These things actually make the Smug better, and cost us more to do :). Hope that explains! Team Smug.

Very Disappointed
These masks look good and I had high hopes but wearing them was very disappointing. As you breathe/talk the material pulls towards your face/mouth making it feel like it is difficult to breathe. Both myself and the other half had the same experience and he also said his glasses were still steaming up. Not worth the money.

Hi Jo - we are sorry to hear this - you may find by slight adjustment the Smug works as intended - avoiding over tightening the toggles as this may create a partial vacuum causing the material to move more than it ordinarily does. Other wearers report the nose clip works well when lightly pressed in and molded to the bridge of the nose. Hope that helps. Smug HQ.

It's never been reported to us that the elastic is too short - perhaps it was miss-cut. It should be between 28 and 30cm - ample to fit comfortably behind the ears. A Snug Smug
This is my second Smug order which probably tells you that I'm happy with the product. A basic cotton mask that does a good job as a face covering and is a snug fit. My only suggestion is (and this is true of 90% of masks) is the ear loops are uncomfortable when needed on a long journey of say 3 hours. An added tie around neck would be useful.

My second order from Smug. Masks fit well and are easy to wash (best tucked into the pocket of tousers or shirt in the wash!) Fabric is light - these are not clinical standard (nor do they claim to be) but good for shopping and transport system and other environments where there is some space.
