Ethical but uncomfortable
I was impressed by the ethical nature of this company and ordered two masks. However I do not like the masks. The fabric is stiff and rigid and I feel as though I am being smothered. They will be my masks of last resort if they are worn at all.

Hi Becca - we're sorry you find wearing the Smug uncomfortable. Sometimes loosening the toggles and nose clip slightly to increase airflow creates a better fit. We are not designed as human beings to have anything covering our mouths for a sustained period – it is unnatural and can be claustrophobic at the best of times, not to mention in this heat!

Really like the face masks great…
Really like the face masks great colours and patterns. Really good quality, washed really well, and the paper bags to put them in, are a great way to keep them clean till they are ready to be used. Would be good to have more patterns in pale colours, love the fact there reversable

Quick delivery but expensive for what it is. Mask gets very hot and hard to breathe through as cotton is thick.

Hi Jay - thanks for the feedback. Sitting in front of a fan currently trying to not melt as the UK experiences a mad heatwave - we tend to concur. Fabric face coverings with any integrity are like to feel pretty uncomfortable in such heat. Worth reiterating that handmade products in the UK, including certified organic cotton, integrated nose clip, adjustable toggles etc - with an all ethical UK supply chain to support British businesses, paying the Living Wage, including 20% VAT and a donation to a foodbank - obviously come at more of a premium than other inferior or mass products. We hope to make some economies of scale and to pass these on :)

The face masks are in nice colours and have adjustable ear straps but find them a little big and a little too thick and find them hard to breathe thru and very hot. Child sizes are 20% smaller I have been told so might be more suitable if you have a smaller face .

The face masks ordered are good quality, adjustable and attractive. I feel however, that they did not represent true value for money given what is now available as re-useable masks at a more reasonable price.

Hi Rose - thanks for the feedback we will continue to work hard to drive value for money and pass that on to customers as we learn and grow. Each Smug is printed on GOTS certified organic cotton,, handcut and hand sewn here in the UK. We use an ethical supply chain, sourcing all our materials (adjustable toggles, elastic, woven label, nose clips) from other UK suppliers to support British business. We pay the living wage. Our packaging is all FSC approved, recycled and biodegradable.The price of a Smug includes 20% VAT along with a donation to a UK foodbank. We agree that there are cheaper fabric face coverings available - but we don't think any of them offer the same experience and quality of a Smug.

Excellent Product - lovely size - might be a good plan to up the quality of holder as I see a number of more robust plastic based products are becoming available - even have one myself for the SMUG mask!!

Definitely agree Robert as per another comment - we are working on the right storage solution - a Smug capsule - to make sure it's hygienically stored, portable and encourages folk to roll/store length wise to keep the nose clip straight! Not easy - but watch this space :)
Buy a mask instead of making one
If you do not relish the thought of making your own face covering then SMUG is a good place to go. The masks appear to be well made and they are certainly more comfortable to wear than the paper disposable alternatives.
When out and about, I tried keeping the mask in the provided pouch but it was a little too stiff to sit comfortably in my pocket.

Very poor fitting mask
Very poor fitting mask. It is really uncomfortable to use and quite hard to breathe, despite trying it for a number of days and also gave to my partner but she experienced the same issues unfortunately.
Not experienced the same issues with other masks so this is a shame as they seem like a decent UK company. Other reviews seem good so it is possible this is just an issue for me.
Customer services have tried to resolve it but were not prepared to issue a full refund and can’t return them due to hygiene issues. I am told that they are working on a new design so hopefully this will be better.
P.S. I have updated this to reflect the effort put in by Ed to resolve this and the fact that this is a family run social enterprise which is something that I like to support.

Hi Robyn thanks for your feedback. When you contacted us we suggested adjusting the toggles and nose clip to improve the fit and airflow. Most customers find Smugs very comfortable and effective. We also reiterated the returns policy as displayed on the website, explaining why we cannot accept returns of Smugs due to hygiene reasons. We simply cannot handle, restock, or reissue face masks that may have been worn by other customers. Despite this we immediately processed a 50% refund of your order and also offered to contact you when our new Smug 2.0 launches. We are sorry that this face mask isn't to your satisfaction - we tried our best! Team Smug.

Best reusable mask I have tried
I ordered the lime mask for myself and the navy for my partner. Both items arrived promptly and in good condition. My partner hasn't worn his, but I'm very pleased with mine - it's comfortable, easy to adjust fits very well and the material is very good quality and washes well.
The seal is excellent which means that my glasses don't steam up when I'm wearing it. This is amazing as I also have a visual impairment in one eye. When wearing certain other masks I have to spend a lot of time cleaning my glasses and adjusting my mask (which I know I'm not supposed to do), otherwise I literally can't see.
I was so pleased I ordered two more - bright pink and slate blue.
These are of the same quality, though the pink one is a little smaller fitting - still provides a good seal and pretty comfortable, but I still prefer the lime one.
