I stayed in Rome

I stayed in Rome, Termini, one night before my flight on the 10th of February.
The room, the apartment and building where I stayed were so outdated and in horrible conditions and I felt so unsafe. My room’s door had been obviously forced from the big scratches near the handle. The room’s pictures on the Airbnb site were completely different from the ones I have then sent to them.

I have called customer emergency for support and the first answer was a girl from Romania that listened to me and ensured that someone would have called me back in 2 minutes to help me out. This was 9 pm. After half an hour none called me and I called back the customer emergency again. A guy from Albania answered and he was fooling me with strange questions and not helpful at all.
I continued calling. Finally an English speaker girl answered ( I don’t know from where, maybe uk) and she was the only one that open a new case. By this time it was 11 in the night and I couldn’t go out on my own in this already unsafe area. The only help I received was, we are seeing how we can help you. Then the owner wrote to me at midnight asking how he could help me.
I kept writing Airbnb the whole night describing what was happening in that horrible place, children screaming, people talking loud and someone banging the whole night on the wall. The walls were very thin. I felt I was in a terrible movie. Obviously I didn’t sleep the whole night.

The following day in the night I received a message from a guy from Airbnb saying they have agreed to give me a refund through a voucher.
I don’t even know if i will use this platform again in my life.

Don’t publish your listings on Airbnb

This is the answer of the Airbnb ambassador after a guest obtain a full refund: “From the pictures you sent it’s possible to see that the house is clean and tidy but the operator cannot check that there isn’t a smell. The guest complained about the smell so we waive the cancellation fee at your cost” 👏👏

Dear Airbnbs, it goes without explanation that you don’t have a clue on what is correct and what is not. This message is basically saying that guests can stay for free if they say that the house smell, because I can’t prove that the accusation is false.
Who makes the accusation needs to put evidence forward, not the other way around.

You are not a good business partner, and if you don’t change things won’t work for you.

Bad bad Experience
I stayed in a listing that was in unacceptable hygienic conditions. The duvet was filthy and clearly had not been washed, and I woke up covered in bites even on my face and around my eyes.

I contacted Airbnb immediately, explaining that I was far from home, alone, and in town for an important business meeting. Despite the urgency of the situation, I received no support or solution.
This is not the first time I’ve encountered hygiene issues through Airbnb, but this time was by far the worst , both for the condition of the property and the lack of assistance.
I will no longer be using Airbnb. The platform claims to work with private individuals renting their homes, but many listings are run purely for profit, with no real care for guest safety or comfort and Airbnb takes no responsibility when things go wrong

Ho prenotato un appartamento a Barcellona per due mesi, pubblicizzato come 60 m² ma in realtà misurava solo 45 m². Una stanza era inferiore ai 6 m², il bagno (2,36 m²) senza finestra era praticamente uno sgabuzzino e la cucina dichiarata “completamente attrezzata” non lo era affatto: ho dovuto acquistare pentole e utensili di base.
Ho segnalato tutto con foto e misure, ma Airbnb ha risposto che “le foto corrispondevano” e ha chiuso il reclamo senza soluzione.
Inoltre il prezzo su Airbnb (1.995 €/mese) era superiore a quello sul sito ufficiale dell’agenzia (1.680 €/mese).

Airbnb si limita a fare da intermediario, ma quando ci sono gravi discrepanze non tutela gli ospiti. Dopo questa esperienza, non mi sento di raccomandare la piattaforma.

I booked an apartment in Barcelona for two months, advertised as 60 m² but in reality it was only 45 m². One of the bedrooms was less than 6 m², the bathroom (2.36 m²) with no window was basically a storage closet, and the kitchen, listed as “fully equipped”, was not: I had to buy basic cookware and utensils myself.

I reported all this with photos and measurements, but Airbnb replied that “the photos matched” and closed my claim without offering any solution.
Moreover, the price on Airbnb (€1,995/month) was higher than the same apartment listed on the official agency website (€1,680/month).

Airbnb acts only as an intermediary, but when there are serious discrepancies, they do not protect guests. After this experience, I cannot recommend the platform.

TOTAL NIGHTMARE!

We booked an apartment in Cannes (Residence Cannes Beach La Bocca) in late August 2025, and it was a total nightmare! The residence was filthy, run-down, full of cockroaches (we found out a pest control was planned the week after!), and the atmosphere was absolutely unsafe. My girlfriend was even verbally harassed right after arrival, and local police on site told us it was a dangerous area and strongly advised us not to stay there.

The apartment itself wasn’t properly cleaned either. We contacted the host right away, but he brushed off all the issues. We then reached out to Airbnb support, sending plenty of photos (we also have videos) and even some recent articles from the local newspapers that certified the rundown state of the residence, but after 12 hours they simply told us we weren’t entitled to any refund.

So we left immediately, didn’t spend a single night there, and still got zero assistance. Airbnb completely ignored basic safety and hygiene standards. We are already taking legal action accordingly, but - for sure - after this experience, we’ll never book with Airbnb again, and we will advise all our friends and people we know against doing so!

The house was without hot water and the bed was broke. They wanted give me back in total only 50 euros. The Airbnb assistance didn't answer from 23 PM to 10 am and this was what they resolved. BAD SERVICE, BAD PEOPLE, DON'T USE IT!!!

Tourist Roger Hoch

Tourist Roger Hoch, who booked my apartment in Alghero from July 25 to August 1 (Booking confirmation HM AZ5QWWP), left on July 31 without any notice, leaving the keys on the table. I always welcome my guests personally and also handle check-outs in person.
What’s truly concerning is that Airbnb has not contacted me to clarify whether this behavior constitutes a rule violation.

Leaving the apartment unlocked like that meant anyone could have entered my home. I’m still waiting for a call from Airbnb to address this matter.

Disappointing

Very disappointing stay at Via Irlandesi/Portuense in Rome, Italy. The apartment was not as clean as expected—floors were dirty on arrival, and the bathroom had visible mold. There was also no dishwasher, which made daily tasks difficult for a family with young children during a 2.5-week stay.

While nicely decorated, the apartment isn’t practical or safe for families—fragile items and old furnishings plus too many paintings were left within reach of toddlers. After a small lamp broke and a minor stain may have occurred, we voluntarily offered to replace them and ordered new items from Amazon at our own expense.

Unfortunately, the host responded with accusatory messages, exaggerated claims, and legal threats, despite our transparency and cooperation. We are experienced, respectful guests and have never been treated this way before.

Not recommended for families or guests expecting a clean, functional, and hospitable environment.
We’ve traveled extensively and never encountered such hostility.
Last but not least, Airbnb is a hospitality platform and business, not rentals and passive income...

As a long-time top-rated host in Milan

As a long-time top-rated host in Milan, Italy, I’m extremely disappointed by Airbnb's current policies and treatment of hosts.

After more than 200 five-star reviews and years of offering experiences on the platform, I have lost all trust in Airbnb. For over 8 months, I’ve been waiting for a pending payment that Airbnb has failed to resolve. Despite sending over 10 messages to Airbnb support, every reply ends with the same generic message:
"Thanks for taking the time to reach out. I'm going to forward your case to a member of our team who's in a better position to resolve this for you... this thread will close..." — and nothing happens.

Airbnb charges hosts more than 20% while manipulating listing visibility, encouraging hosts to create new listings instead of supporting the ones they’ve built and earned trust on. This seems to be a tactic to gain more from commissions, at the expense of the hosts' efforts and reputation.

To me, this is not just poor customer service — it’s a complete lack of empathy, responsibility, and integrity.
I will never use Airbnb again, whether for experiences or property rentals. Airbnb has made it clear that profit comes before people.

Very dirty place, smells of mold, poorly lit place at night. We found bed bugs that gave me an incurable autoimmune syndrome and cockroaches coming out of the pipes. A real nightmare. The photos on booking sites do not correspond to reality.

Reservation with refund... but no refund

Reservation with total refund within X days > had to cancel the reservation for personal reasons few hours later > no refund. Thanks a lot for getting my money in your pocket for nothing.
PS I've been a Airbnb loyal customer FOR YEARS. I know very well the platform, so I'm not a rookie here.

Bad guidelines and behavior. In the past I chose Airbnb because it allowed me to get in touch with local people, this was the added value for me. Today it is a dystopian experience: everything happens for wa, the owner lives in another city, and cleaning women take care of the apartments. The key is shabby boxes hanging outside the entrances. The traveler is not a package, a number to manage, he is a person to welcome: a thousand wa messages are not worth a handshake or a chat. Hospitality means having the hot water already turned on and not a sheet on how to turn it on. A flower, a small snack or fruit on the table. Without attention and care it's just brutal business.

Pessime linee guida e di comportamento. In passato ho scelto Airbnb perché consentiva di entrare in contatto con le persone del luogo, era questo per me il valore aggiunto. Oggi è un'esperienza distopica: tutto si svolge per wa, il proprietario vive in un'altra città o in un altro quartiere, e incarica dei factotum, spesso donne delle pulizie, che si occupano di più appartamenti. La chiave si prende in delle tristi cassette appese al di fuori degli ingressi. Il viaggiatore non è un pacco, un numero da gestire, è una persona da accogliere: mille messaggi wa non valgono una stretta di mano o una chiacchierata. Ospitalità è far trovare l'acqua calda già accesa e non un foglio su come accenderla, un fiore, un piccolo snack o della frutta sul tavolo. Senza attenzioni e senza cura è solo freddo business.

A Truly Abhorrent Company

I had been a loyal customer of Airbnb for nearly a decade, however that all changed when I had an issue with a booking recently and had to contact them on the matter. Never have I dealt with a customer “support” department as abhorrent as that of Airbnb.

It has become apparent that Airbnb is simply a website to connect a rentor with a rentee, for which they take their fee to do so. Beyond that they take a hands off approach, failing to follow their own processes and failing in their duty of care to their customers whom they treat with disdain. When questions are asked of their “support” department they do not provide an answer only a ‘response’, a response which is cut and paste fluff which often bares little, if any, relation to the original question posed.

This company lack any transparency, does not have a valid complaints handing process (to make a complaint about a “support” team members conduct they expect you to make the complaint to the very email address that the “support” team member you want to complain about emails you from!), and has no interest in solving issues faced by their customers given that they pass you around their various arrogant and poorly trained “support” staff and close your case down even though it has clearly not been resolved, meaning that you then have to contact them again to open a new case and start the process all over again.

Their focus should be on assisting their customers and addressing their issues, not meeting some arbitrary target to close cases down within a set amount of time. The whole set up is designed so that they hope you just eventually give up and go away. Their staff act with impunity with clearly no fear of repercussions for their unprofessional behaviour, all set in a company culture that is rotten to the core.

Their abominable TrustPilot rating and reviews highlight my experience with Airbnb has not been unique, and unfortunately is extremely common.

How this publicly traded company is still in business is beyond me.

I have had experience for a long time, and I maintain that Airbnb is strongly biased in favor and protection of the traveler and never of the owner. I therefore decided to suspend the advertising and to continue working with VRBO

Airbnb is wrong knowing it's wrong, but does not care about it. In complete contempt of hosts, who are those who, with their properties, allow the platform to exist.
