Information provided by various external sources

Founded in 2010 by British inventor Davies Roberts, Flare Audio spent its formative years as a pro audio manufacturer and hire company. Flare re-invented the loudspeaker, drawing praise from music industry luminaries including Jimmy Page, Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley and producer ‘Flood’. The company’s big innovation and mission is to minimise all types of distortion and it has developed several patent-pending technologies to achieve this. This ‘pure sound’ technology is now available in a range of award-winning earphones. In 2016, Flare launched Isolate®, its first sound-reducing product which used solid metal to block, rather than absorb sound. This innovation exceeded all expectations attracting over £2million in crowd funding and was followed up with Sleeep® ear plugs. Flare now ships to over 170 countries world-wide and has over 2 million likes on Facebook. Despite rapid growth the company maintains a strong customer focus. Flare’s team is dedicated to rethinking sound technology ‘from the ground up’, pushing boundaries and continuing to achieve exciting developments in audio innovation.

Flare Sonic Lens with AirpodsPro 2

Well I was sceptical at first but I went ahead and purchased Flare Sonic Lens , after delivery I listened to a song I like as test ,but after inserting them into bud tips on my AirPods Pro 2 ( so easy to fit too ) wow what a difference in sound quality cool bass mids and highs , I can now hear sounds not clear before , cymbals and tambourines so clear no distortion whatever, so I took the Lens back out tried listening again and lost some of clear sounds so inserted lens back in and that’s where they’re staying , absolutely awesome difference , I can’t understand why Apple didn’t incorporate this in the design , oh well their loss .

Teacher Approved. Full stop.

Just wow. They worked great. I’m a middle school teacher, and they worked great in my classroom. Took out the echo and the tin sounds of things clanging about. They're virtually invisible unless someone is sitting right next to you and can see directly into your ear.
Overall - I'm pleased with their functionality. The small ones are VERY small. I ordered the multi pack with both sizes. Larger size is definitely more standard. I have a big head - finding hats is quite the task lol - so I feel like even a slightly larger version would be perfect for me so l'm not having to tap them back into place, but functionally, they were incredible today in class. Just a few tips for a new user:
1. Don't push too much when inserting - I had to get tweezers to grab the handle and pull the one back out.
2. At first, talking with them in feels like when you plug your ears and talk. I felt like I was in my head, but not, because I could hear everything else. Once I got over that sensation, I started adjusting.
3. They make things less "echoey," for lack of a better word. It really cuts down on the reverb of sounds in my own apartment I didn't even realize were there, so I was focusing more on the sounds themselves. Kind of like as if all sounds were coming from earbuds.
4. Wear them for short periods at a time and work up to getting used to them. I think I was focusing on them so much it made my ears "tired" and I needed a break from the new way I was hearing things.
5. When they're in, leave them alone. The feeling of something in your ear is real, but every time you fuss with them it's almost like you have to readjust to the feeling of them being there again.
I think the more I wear and use them, the better it's going to be. Things are still very new, and I’m adjusting to them. I highly recommend these if you are looking for a way to ease your day but not block out sound.

Keeping me sane for longer

I was late diagnosed with autism, and have sensory sensitivities, especially regarding sound.
I've tried the original Calmer before.
Helpful, but this Performance product is for me the next level up.
They take the edge off my stress responses to my surroundings, which means I last longer in social gatherings before my brain gets too tired.
I have less stress, anxiety, and I get mentally tired & overwhelmed less quickly.
Such a pleasant surprise and relief for me.
I hope a future model will be softer, as this product hurts my ears a bit when I wear them for longer periods.
Advice and support from the Flare team has been great too.

Sleeep earplugs-Rubbish

Sleeep earplugs-Personally these are a waste of money. Won't stay in my ears despite all the squeezing and rolling and pushing in. The plastic piece is so uncomfortable. Don't waste your money.

No more bone piercing sound

If certain sounds pierce your bones and make them vibrate then this is what you want. It doesn’t muffle the sounds like earplugs, these just take the bite out of the sounds. I have autism and teach at a primary level and these really are a life saver! I also wear them when I take my own kids places like the park for the same reason.

Sleep

I've tried variations on the sleep ear plugs as I'm married to a snorer. In my opinion the latest aren't as effective. They are very comfortable and do the job put every morning when I remove them the rubber end gets left in my ears. I then have to get the tweezers out to remove.
I've gone back to an earlier pair but it's difficult to get replacement tips.
I hope they keep evolving as I will try the next launch and keep my fingers crossed for an improvement.
I've always found the company very professional to deal with.

Purchased Calmer Pro from them

Bought a pair of Calmer Pros for myself, mainly for tackling cocktail effect. Worked perfectly, helped me focus better in restaurants and calm down at the metro. Am not used to in-ear earbuds before, but Calmer Pro fits comfortably and does not fall out.
Customer service is super nice - requested for change in size from mini to standard about 12 hours after confirming order, and didn't expect Flare to make changes, but they managed to swap in before dispatch without making a fuss or some back-and-forth emails.

They started great with their original…

They started great with their original product. But since then, they have shown what look like wonderful products on their website, which, quite frankly, are crap. Their latest product, Earshades, is so small that they don't block noise at all. This is a long line of a continuation of crap I've bought from them, only to be disappointed. I don't know how these guys lost their way, but they obviously changed designers or something. Stay away from their products. They're terrible.

Hi Bruce,

We’re sorry you feel let down by your recent Earshade purchase. We’ve spoken with you directly throughout your order, answering each question about fit, sizing, tip compatibility, and product imagery as quickly and clearly as we could.

From the start, we’ve let you know you’re covered by our 100-day return guarantee, and we’ve never denied you a refund. You’ve now sent your items back, and we’ll be refunding your order in full.

Earshade has been independently tested and certified to –31 dB attenuation, and when fitted correctly, it should block noise more effectively than the original Isolate tips you mentioned. If the fit isn’t quite right, it won’t perform at its best, and we always invite customers to contact us so we can guide them through achieving a proper seal.

We understand you’ve decided not to try further adjustments, and we respect that. Our aim is always for customers to be happy with their purchase, and if not, to make the return process smooth and fair.

Best Regards

Team Flare

Peace, finally

I've been purchasing pairs of Calmer for a few years now; as an AuDHDer they're life saving.
I was so happy to finally be able to try out the filters and… man oh man!
Calmer were already hands down the best, from the start, but with these filters..! {chefs kiss}
I am autistic and have ADHD, with massive hyperacusis and auditory processing disorder and I have tried out a fair bunch of those competitors (loop, hears, happy ears,..) and ha! You guys can sleep on both your ears (I hope this French saying translates ok)!
I feel that thanks to your products I can finally imagine venturing outside of my den without damage. Finally less loud almost WITHOUT inner noises being increased! :3
My gratitude is immense. Thank you!
I hope you get a Nobel - in any case, well done on the Kings award! It is very much deserved!

Thank you for making the world a liveable place for us bats :)

ps: wore them at the cinema where i dared return for the first time in 3 years (for the latest Jurassic Park) and it made a huge difference! I still had to hold my hands to my ears on a fair few occasions but that's only because film sound balancing has been nonsensical for a while now (hence not going to the cinema anymore) - so, barring obnoxious dino roaring, the rest of the film felt actually comfortable!

EXCEPTIONAL customer service

I purchased Flare Calmer and found them useful, but then learned through engagement with their customer service team (they asked me to send a photograph) that the earbuds were too big. Without my even asking, they credited me with the cost of the original earbuds so that I could purchase the mini ones - I only needed to pay shipping! Given that it is actually my responsibility to have ordered the correct size, I had no reason to expect them to go so far beyond what would be reasonable - but they did! I cannot compliment them highly enough for their response and I look forward to wearing the product that fits correctly! Clearly this is a company which will act with great integrity toward customers, rather than being focused on profits over people.

I really enjoy my Calmer by Flare

I really enjoy my Calmer by Flare. They help manage noise in crowded spaces, traffic noise when driving or walking (without compromising safety), and the annoyance of loud talkers and chewers. They do NOT amplify my own chewing etc noises the way earplugs might. The only reason I haven’t given them 5 stars is that I am still adjusting to the feeling of them in my ears.

Great support for kids fit

I have worn flare audio calmers in the busy places for a few years now and they do help me cut out some of the background.
I bought some kids calmer for my ASD son who was not coping with the sound of the rain on our conservatory roof. We needed support for the fit which came in a timely manner with photos to support and they were so helpful. He can now wear them with the filters in the conservatory when it's raining. He's also looking forward to wearing them at school.

Exactly what i needed!

I've used them only for a couple of days but man, they are great! Exactly what i needed!
I have very sensitive hearing, and since i returned to live in an urban environment i experienced panic attacks almost every time i leave my home, caused mainly by the noise chaos of a very crowded city.
When i used them outside, i didn't have a panic attack! It was years since i haven't one in a noise environment, and i used them without the filters, incredible!
Love them very much, and also i want to thank a lot the client support for the help with an issue old months, great people!

Love them!

I got the nude (I love that these are more discrete) flare calmer with the filter pack. I already had a teal set of the original calmers, but wanted to give the softer silicone a try. I love them both. I love the filters (they fit in both models) as they add that extra needed lower volume in situations where I feel I need a little extra assistance. I use them almost daily. 10/10 recommendation if noise is stressful to you.

Very Relieved, Very Grateful

These really help a great deal. I am recovering from a tbi, & at times there is inflammation in my head. Everyday sounds have been really difficult, & most times my head hurts throughout everyday. I’d taken so much medicine that I had to do without because it would have started causing issues with my heart. When I first got these, I wore them all the time, everyday & could notice a really grateful difference, but even then I wasn’t aware just how much. A couple days ago I had already skipped a day of not wearing them & yesterday I experienced the inflammation & headaches. I thought putting them in at this time would make it worse. Finally, at the end of the day, I put them in. It was my last resort before medication. There was relief within the first 30 minutes, & the swelling had gone down within the hour. I am holding back tears right now.. Thank you.

All my sets work great

I have several different sets of calmer earplugs. I'm delighted with them all. I also have another popular brand which I don't like because I feel like I am wearing a glass's bowl. With calmer I can hear everything but it's calmer and the harsh tones are removed. I highly recommend them. I also think the customer service is excellent.

Flare Immerse won’t get the recognition

Flare Immerse won’t get the recognition they truly deserve. They’re especially valuable for anyone mixing or mastering with headphones—particularly when it comes to exposing how much distortion headphones introduce. Many users might feel like they’re “losing” certain frequencies, but in truth, Immerse removes the distortion that’s usually present. This clarity may be due to their unique acoustic design—possibly the arch within the listening chamber—which allows for an impressively clean and honest sound.

Paired with flat-response headphones like those from Focal or Sennheiser, Immerse helps present your mix as it truly is. The best approach is to find what sounds right to you first—then switch to Immerse to hear it stripped of artificial enhancements. The result is almost always a more refined and better-balanced final mix.

The only drawback is ear fatigue—primarily due to the eartip comfort. Personally, I find anything beyond two hours can become a bit much.

Calmer Extra Mini 2nd Pair Ordered

I was skeptical to try the Calmer Extea Mini ear buds but I've now ordered a 2nd pair so I always have them with me. I keep them in the hard case they also sell. I have small ear canals and they are very comfortable to wear and don't fall out. I can have conversations without the overwhelm and harshness of noises that are stressful for me. For safety reasons, I need to hear what's going on around me. It softens loud noises and I'm so glad I finally bought these.

Off of Anxiety Meds thanks to Calmer Pro

HIGHLY RECOMMEND: I have the calmer pro. I love my job and it is incredibly overstimulating. I work as a Special Educator co-running a program for high schoolers with Emotional Disturbance. I just had no idea how much the tapping, clicking, chewing, intermittent loud noises, etc. was getting to me. I kept having anxiety attacks when I got home. Then I got calmer pro. I can’t even explain the night and day difference it makes. If I’m in the cafeteria it makes it all one sound instead of 8 individual conversations that I’m hearing at once and I’m not jarred by the squeaks of the chairs. I haven’t needed anxiety medication since I started using Calmer Pro. For someone who has struggled my whole life with even the sounds of other people chewing, this product is amazing! My left ear has some scarring but the silicone is so soft that it doesn’t bother me.

Hidden Fees and Poor Transparency

Response 18/9-25:
Thank you for your reply.

The issue is not that additional charges may apply when ordering from outside the EU, but how this was communicated — or rather, the lack of clear communication. A small 'lightgrey on white' note below the shipping option and a link to a separate policy page, in my view, do not meet the standard for clear and accessible information. With prices shown in DKK and no explicit indication that shipping was from outside the EU, the purchase appeared to be EU-based, with VAT included.

You mention that I did not accept your offer of placing a new order with prepaid duties. That’s not accurate. I responded with a reasoned explanation of why I did not consider it a fair resolution, in the hope of reaching a mutually acceptable agreement. At no point did I reject the offer outright. Despite this, you unilaterally proceeded with a partial refund — a solution I had already made clear was not acceptable.

Additionally, you deducted circa €12 for shipping, even though your website currently lists shipping costs at circa €6. Since the parcel was returned due to unexpected import fees — a direct consequence of insufficient disclosure — it seems unfair to charge the customer double the listed rate, with no explanation.

I appreciate your polite tone, but I must reiterate that this experience fell short of both transparency and fair customer treatment.

Original review 17/9-25:
My recent experience with Flare Audio was frustrating and ultimately disappointing. I placed an order from Denmark, where prices were displayed in DKK — giving the clear impression of local or EU-based shipping, with VAT included. Nowhere during the purchase was it made sufficiently clear that the order would ship from outside the EU, triggering not just customs and VAT, but a steep handling fee from the Danish postal service.

Due to these unexpected extra costs, I refused the parcel — and it was returned to Flare. However, instead of offering a full refund, they deducted 12€ DKK, which is nearly 20% of my original payment (60,9€). It is highly doubtful that this deduction reflects their actual shipping costs, and regardless, the issue only arose due to Flare’s own lack of pricing transparency. Penalizing the customer for that is simply unfair.

They pointed out that there was a warning at checkout about taxes and duties — but this was a small, light-grey note beneath the shipping option, which in no way meets the standard of clear and transparent pricing information expected under EU law.

Adding to this, I was in an ongoing dialogue with customer support where I raised valid concerns and requested a full refund. Instead of responding meaningfully, they abruptly closed the case and processed a partial refund without my approval — cutting off the conversation mid-discussion.

While their tone remained polite, Flare Audio’s handling of international orders and customer care was rigid, dismissive, and ultimately unsatisfactory. I would advise EU-based customers to think twice before ordering.

It’s a real shame, because I’ve genuinely enjoyed their products in the past — but this kind of shady practice is something I simply cannot accept.

Reply from Flare Audio

Hi Bo,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We understand your frustration and want to respond transparently and respectfully — especially as your experience touches on a transition that affected several EU customers last year.

At the time of your order, we were not yet registered for the EU’s IOSS system, which meant that taxes and duties could not be collected during checkout. In line with EU consumer regulations, we displayed a warning beneath the shipping method stating “Taxes and Duties Excluded”, and linked to a full shipping policy confirming that such costs were the responsibility of the buyer. We recognise that this may not have been as prominent as you'd prefer.

To be clear: displaying local currencies like DKK does not imply local shipping or tax inclusion. This is a standard e-commerce practice used to help customers see prices in familiar terms. At all stages, the checkout showed only the amounts billed by Flare — without adding VAT — which is in line with EU directives that require disclosure of fees charged by the seller. We have no control over the postal service’s import handling fees, nor are we legally obliged to include them unless collected upfront via IOSS — which, at the time, we were not yet authorised to do.

Despite this, we offered a fair resolution:

• A new order using our updated system where all taxes would be prepaid, meaning no further charges on delivery.

• A full refund of your original order once the new one was paid — absorbing all previous shipping and handling costs.

• When that wasn’t accepted, we processed a standard refund minus a modest handling fee, which reflects real costs incurred due to the order refusal and return.

We genuinely regret that this experience has caused disappointment — especially as you've been a returning customer. While we believe we acted transparently and in line with legal requirements, we understand that the situation around international charges can feel frustrating, particularly during periods of regulatory change.

Our team always aims to resolve issues fairly and respectfully, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to improve. If you would like to revisit the replacement option or have any further concerns, we’d be happy to help — just reach out to us at info@flareaudio.com.

Warm regards,
Team Flare
