If I could give this company zero stars, I absolutely would.
This has been one of the worst experiences I have ever had with any company. Home Chef charged my card after making it nearly impossible to cancel or modify my order. I attempted multiple times to stop this shipment and was met with nothing but frustration and roadblocks.
Then, to make matters worse, they completely ignored my delivery instructions. My package was left outside overnight in over 100-degree Texas heat instead of being delivered to the designated location for large packages. By the time I found it, the meat had turned gray and was completely unusable.
So not only did they take my money for food I repeatedly tried not to receive, they delivered it in a way that made it unsafe to eat.
I feel completely ripped off. This company showed no regard for my requests, no regard for proper food handling, and no respect for its customers.
Save yourself the aggravation and order from a company that actually listens to its customers and stands behind its service. I will never do business with Home Chef again.
We went online and was looking at ordering meals, looking at the pricing of meals looking at what type of meals they had. And we decided to order six meals with their introductory pricing, which would make our Bill $37 and some change instead we were charged $312 and received meals that some of which were over $15 a piece. When we called the company, they said there was nothing they could do about that. It was our fault. We never pushed a button to order or anything else at all, but they claim that when you just get on there and look at that point you are ordering. When we call customer service. They ran us a credit for 50% meaning we have to order more from them to even get that amount back. When we called back and requested that they would give us a refund back to our card. They said no, when we asked to speak to a manager the person on the phone said she has people above her, but we cannot speak to them.
I would never in 1 million years use this company ever again or recommend them or their parent companies. They don’t even deserve the one star review
if you like GETTING MAD AND UPSET THEN USE THESE GUYS
OTHERWISE DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR AND DO NOT REPEAT DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY

THEY DID A GREAT JOB CHEATING THIS SENIOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Home Chef is absolutely terrible. This company requires you to “pause” your account so you don’t receive meals. If you wish to cancel your subscription, it is nearly impossible. Then Home Chef will randomly reactivate your subscription and send you meals and charge your credit card with no chance to cancel your meals or charges.
They bait and switched me. I selected microwave meals in the beginning, completed checkout, and then only after found out the microwave meals is a different menu that is double the price. I cancelled immediately but still was charged and received delivery. They refused to provide refund because according to them I should have called because the first order ships automatically. This is not stated anywhere in the website.
Like many of you, I also experienced this today. I created a Home Chef account, reviewed the menu, and paused/deactivated the subscription only 13 minutes after signing up because I did not find meals I wanted.
The confirmation email stated that I would be charged unless I skipped or paused my account, so I reasonably believed the order had been stopped. Home Chef later claimed that pausing the subscription did not cancel the first order and that I was required to contact customer support separately before the deadline.
This distinction was not clear during the signup or cancellation process. Despite acting immediately and several days before the charge was finalized, Home Chef refused to refund the $33.57 charge and offered only a 50% account credit that requires me to reactivate the subscription within 90 days.
I asked them to provide the account history supporting their claim that the order had been “unskipped and edited,” but they did not provide it. I am now disputing the charge with American Express.
The entire process feels unnecessarily confusing and designed in a way that makes it too easy for customers to believe they canceled when the first order is still active. I strongly recommend taking screenshots, saving every email, and contacting customer service immediately after pausing or canceling.
Honestly I have never had a worse experience with a meal delivery service. I cancelled and they still charged me then when I got home and opened the order the entire order was covered in chicken juice and a total food safety hazard. When I tried to use the help button on their website it would not allow me to continue the chat. COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY. I have used other meal delivery services and the customer service can totally make up for a mistake or a bad order but the customer service offered no help aside from a $50 Credit that wouldn't even cover a whole other box so they can try to scam you out of even more money.
Deceptive tactics! Had to enter my credit card to see the menu. Then I looked over the menu for about 30 minutes, decided it wasn't for me and cancelled my account right away. That should have been the end, right? Home Chef still charged me $59.88 and shipped a week of meals (which I didn't choose!). When I called customer service, the representative told me in a fake sorry voice that when I signed up, the fine print said you have to call customer service to cancel, can't do it on the webpage. He would not give me a refund.
There were bugs in a fully sealed bag of produce for one of my meals. They have also delivered a box with entirely spoiled meat. Do not EVER use this service.
I've tried Factor, Hello Fresh, and Home Chef, and it's clear that Home Chef leans more toward convenience and value while sacrificing quality.
The meals are large, but nothing is organic, many of the sauces are ultra-processed, and the meat is low quality. Bell peppers, zucchines, and other vegetables often come soggy as well. But overall, the recipes and meals are practical and end up tasting quite good.
There is a lot of plastic waste, the most of any meal service I have tried. The metal trays are not recyclable. The company could reduce waste by preparing many of the sauces in-house, but they likely choose not too as they have deals with the food monopolies to provide single-use packets.
Overall I do not think I will continue this service as I wish to focus on healthier food options that create less waste.
I feel that the meals are incomplete. I have used GreenChef and Hello Fresh who include a protein, a vegetable and a starch (rice, couscous, barley etc.) Home Chef only includes a protein and a vegetable. The recipes are quite basic, obviously geared toward someone who barely knows the basics of cooking. Green Chef and Hello Fresh offer restaurant quality meals (depth of flavor, creative) and recipes. Home Chefs vegetables are in poor condition when they arrive (frozen, bruised, discolored). I expected more from Gordon Ramsey.
I've been with Home Chef for about 4 months now and I'm done. Although the food is good, I'm often missing ingredients, menus, or meat. Once again, my order today is missing two meals out of the seven ordered. They need to do better.
Set up dont make since. And it charged me after canceling. and make it hard to cancel
It’s a viscous loop. I must have gone through the same steps a dozen times trying to close my account.
Any company that goes to such pain to avoid dealing with customers, and to make it so difficult to cancel their account is definitely NOT a company I want to do business with
I went on to their website on Thursday, 6/25. In order to view pricing and meal offerings, I was required to create a login, provide my name and address and enter a credit card number. Then I saw the pricing and meals that were offered. It was way too expensive, their "fresh" whatever that's supposed to be low in calories was over 600 calories for each meal. Overpriced and not happy with their misleading information, I deleted what they preselected in my cart, then "paused" the subscription, followed by sending a request to delete the account in its entirety. I received confirmation the deletion was being processed. 4 days later on Monday, 6/29 I see a credit card charge. They are refusing to credit the charge, stating I agreed to their terms and conditions which states they would charge my card for the first order. An order I did not pick. An order I deleted from the cart. I've never been charged for anything online without going to a payment screen and clicking "submit" or "authorize." This is a shady business practice to get money quick. They told me because the shipping label had already been created there's nothing that they can do. I work in Logistics and let me tell you they can absolutely void that shipping label if it has not been scanned by the carrier. Here we are over a day later, they still haven't shipped the package and are still refusing to credit the charge. I attempted to chat with customer support but chat services were not functioning. This horrible business practice is anti-consumer and specifically designed to take people's money.
Ordered them once and never will again. Ordered 5 meals, 1 meal all wrong ingredients. Another meal, regular potatoes instead of sweet potatoes. A package of chicken was leaking all over the other meats. Herbs were wilted or looked like there were run over by the truck that delivered them. Very poor labeling unless you enjoy mystery packets and pouches of ingredients. Don’t expect any customer service on a Sunday. Tried Hungryroot a few times, they got it right every time.
