Buyer Beware. This issue relates i am sure to most Mobile Providers but my issue was specific to id mobile. If you enter into a monthly contract with ID Mobile they will setup a Direct Debit, create an Account that acts as a wrapper for the Sim card(mobile number) and then continue to collect money from your bank account irrespective of whether the Sim has been activated or used. They charge for the Account NOT the Sim. Unfortunately current regulation does not protect the consumer from what in my view is a scam. It lays out how mobile phone companies should manage charges against Pay as You Go schemes for non utilised Sims i.e cancelling the Sim after 6 months, latest 12 months but not when there is a contract in place against what are monthly charges associated to a Sim within their Account structure. I had no knowledge of the Sim within the Account ID mobile had setup but did have 2 other Sims with ID Mobile for my wife and my own phones. I moved those two mobile numbers to Lebara in 2021 to their Pay as you Go option thinking that this was now the end of the ID Mobile relat ionship, however ID mobile continued to collect approx £12 per month for the other Sim as i had not closed the Account. ID mobile have a duty to update a customer that the account is active but will fall back on the email address specified in the account. My problem was that a) i wasnt monitoring that email address and b) i had set the id mobile direct debit up as a valid payment on my own bank reconciliation app, whic h it was originally re my two mobile numbers and had not thought to delete this auto rec entry when i moved over to Lebara. Net, net i was alerted to the ID Mobile account when i did see an email from ID Mobile highlighting the Account was active in november 2025. I Contacted ID mobile who eventually cross referenced the account to a mobile number and to a package i had bought bundled with a Samsung phone in 2017! I requested a refund back to 2021 when i moved to Lebara, they refused. I then used the Direct Debit indemnity scheme to get a repayment of the charges back to 2021. Id mobile passed this amount ovdr to a Debt Collection Company. I then raised a complaint with the Ombudsman. They have ju st concluded that ID mobile did nothing wrong against their contract, if it had been a Pay as You go scheme then the Sim etc wo uld have been cancelled latest 2018. Interesting the Debt Collection Agency sent me a payment request within a couple of hours of the Ombudsman decision! My conclusion is that consumers have a level of protection from the Regulations if tgey are in Pay as You go schemes but have no protectio n, or very limited pritection if they arent.
