The worst airport ever

The worst airport ever - avoid! Ridiculously long queues for security and passport control with every passenger going through a full body scan. Too few staff and extremely short belts. People are forced to stand in very hot conditions. To top it all the food and beverage offerings are substandard and the duty free awful. I will never go through this airport again. If you must visit Munich take a train. Germany is a G7 country and should be ashamed of this service.

Terrible customer service!

Long queue at EU passport control and nobody there to help with e-passports. Only one policeman worked at the counter, who also trained someone and needed at least 3-5 minutes for each passenger. Many families with small children and people whose gates were closing within 15-30 minutes queued and could not move forward. Aggressive altercations ensued as several attempted to force their way forward. All of this could have been prevented if at least a second person had worked at passport control. They only appeared when a passenger did not have the correct ID and the officer went somewhere with that person. So again only one person at the counter. Doesn't the airport have a manager who takes care of how fast the queue moves at the passport counter? My British husband, who was queuing on the other side, was through in 5 minutes as there were 4 people working at the passport desk. I also tried the electronic gates - Easy Pass. Well, they didn't work at all. Nowhere was there any indication of which passports work and which don’t. Also, no person was there to help. Shameful! Customer service at its worst! I have to agree with others: the layout of the airport is terrible, as is the signage. We shall never fly via Germany again.

I’m really glad I read these reviews…

I’m really glad I read these reviews because I thought me and my partner were going mad. The layout is awful . There is no clear signs to show you were to go. You ask and no one knows. Really bad experience. Flight was an hour late and no explanation over tanoys to let people know what was happening. Would never use again. With all these poor reviews. Surely Munich Airport should be looking to change everything about their staff and the airport itself

I’m in Munich Airport right now and boarder control officer showed me disgusted gesticulation when I approached the box. I was disappointed and lost ability to react. Such a strange situation, I never experienced before. People here are really rude.

Not laid out correctly and getting though security/ passport control was one of the worst experience I've ever had at an airport I was told it was because brexit I wondered how long Australia and New Zealand the U.S and various other countries to numerous to mention have been members of the E.U but were still allowed to use the machines

Poor service ... long time waiting

Waited nearly 20 mins on the plane after it had landed, because there were no busses to transport passengers to the terminal building.
On arriving at baggage reclaim we waited 30 mins until luggage started to come out.

Dissappointed at Munich Airport

I used Munich Airport Terminal 1 on 30 June 2023. Very long ques for security and passort control. Not enough personnel, not enough counters. Stuffed in a clostrophobic room. Airport fails in all expectations.

Munich chaos…

Our recent experience of Munich Airport is not great. We left over an hour to get to gate L06 but when we got to passport control the queue was at a standstill. After waiting, hardly moving, for 20 mins we could see there were only 2 guys manning the booths. It got quite heated as people were in danger of missing their flights, us included. People were getting really angry as some people were trying to go through the lane reserved for crew, wheelchairs, families etc. Eventually the airport police arrived to calm things down and an extra guy was put in one of the booths. We managed to get to our flight after it was supposed to have taken off but we then sat on the plane for an hour in the airport before being told there were no baggage handlers available to load the plane. Got to Manchester without luggage!
German efficiency, not in this case.

Frustrating experience

This is a large and utterly confusing airport. As experienced travellers we normally cope easily, but the signage was awful. Security check was fine, but when we got to the passport checking area for departure it was a mass of people queueing for the police to do their scrutinizing. Initially there were 3 or 4 desks open - then all but one went smiling and chatting for their breaks! That desk then spent 20 minutes dealing with one family of 3! We spent over an hour waiting to be allowed through when a couple more desk s opened up. No apology or explanation. People were getting hot, tired, angry and frustrated, and I'm sure some would have missed their flights. Horrible.

no food, lufthansa outplayed itself

Munich airport Terminal 2 is a nightmare for Economy passengers. and on a lounge level this seems like a situation organised purpously by Lufthansa (limited lounge access and no outside lounges).
Security is horrible - but this has already been described in various reviews. the terminal itself has a lot of chairs and toilets, but long layovers are very tricky as:
- restaurants are sparse, queues are long (sometimes 40-60 minutes to get a sandwich), prices high, quality debatable
- shops don't sell any proper food (no sandwiches, salads, so your options are limited to chips and sweets)
- there are only lufthansa lounges on the terminal (very often overcrowded even on senator level) which can not be accessed unless you posses a miles & more status card (once access by payment was possible).
priority pass, lounge key, cash, other status cards are useless as there are no other lounges.
the situation gets even more dire if your flying in the evening as everything closes at 9pm and the airport literally shuts down.
so a delayed flight until 11pm or a long layover on the airport may result in 3 hours of sitting hungry on a chair. or in the best case scenario waiting for 40 minutes in a queue to share a table with a stranger and wait for an a additional 40 minutes for your crappy 50 euros meal. shame.

my advice: Be careful and do not enter terminal 2 ahead of schedule!!! Eat / lounge outside of TERMINAL 2 (at terminal 1 if your switching planes or outside).

I have travelled to 143 countries and I can officially say that Munich airport is the worse. No proper signs to anywhere you want to go. Immigration queues are long and staff is rude. What’s going on guys? Learn something from Berlin and Frankfurt? The only thing nice is at the airport is world lounge.

Worst Terminal Ever

Stuck in the gate from hell (gate H,terminal 2). Literally trapped, you can’t go anywhere even the lower levels and the level I was on just had some sort of high end brands to shop in and barely any quality affordable food. Half a sandwich a bag of chips and a soda bottle cost me 16 euros which is expensive as airports go. There were like three equally unappetizing places to choose from so picked at random….. The staff I talked to were friendly and polite, but they even seem to be aware of how awful this airport is. Even the emergency exit is far and a maze to get to (if needed). Avoid at all costs, miserable little place.

Sadistic security people

Our Air Dolomiti Bari flight to Munich was delayed because of engine trouble. Lufthansa held our flight to San Francisco for 7 passengers. 5 security people let the others through, but were cruel with me, gave me long body and luggage check. Didn't care if I missed my flight. Five Sadistic men and women. I'm an international travel writer. Worst experience with any airport security staff ever.

Minor separated by security from school group

I'm 15 years old and was traveling with my school with about 70 people total. We had a layover in Munich and there were two different passport checks we had to go through. The first one went fine, but at the second check I got "randomly selected" for an additional security check. They took me away from the group, without any of the chaperones knowing, and brought me into a room. At this time, my plane was already boarding and I was very worried that it would take off without me. Luckily, one of my friends saw me get taken away and informed our chaperones, who were able to come tell me they knew where I was. At first, the security people were not going to let my chaperone talk to me until he got angry and they saw how upset I was. This security line went extremely slowly, and it took more than half an hour to get through when there were only 2 people in front of me. It was much stricter than typical security, and after I went through the scanner a woman patted me down, only in the chest area. I was not the only one from our school group taken, and after I got through to the gate, the people boarding the plane made us get on without having everyone else. They reassured us that we wouldn't take off without them, but these other kids were left to find the gate and board without a chaperone's help. Minors should never be separated from their chaperones.

The experience in Duty free was very poor. Customer Service from employees doesn't exist. Shopping in duty free is like disturbing them and also they are not helping with service stating that they do not have crew enough. Not my problem.Very rood, unpleasant. Shame!

It felt like security control inappropriately touched me at security gate

At control gate security, a security patrol officer checked me with both of her hands. I felt sexually assaulted as she was touching my breasts and hips - from top to bottom. What made me more furious was that no signal went off on the detector so I did not see a reason for her invasion of my body. She used her bare hands and not even a licensed stick. I asked her did she see anything, she said no but you moved. I am human and not a statue.

If she had concerns of movement she could have asked me to step back and walk through the detector again. I think this touching was a violation of my personal space and I found it not only inappropriate but highly unnecessary. This needs to stop and staff should be better trained. No one likes to be touched, especially for no reason. As a woman of color it felt like it was being profiled and the officer was using subjective bias as she physically invaded my body unnecessarily. I request such violations to be avoided and stopped. This staff should have been warned or expelled for doing this although she claimed she is just doing her job. Honestly, her job felt nasty and disgusting as I felt assaulted.

I understand you are trying to protect the safety of travels but no need to stereotype people who are innocent and good citizens of society. There are more professional, objective, and appropriate ways to meet an objective without violating a human basic rights, one of which is also a need to feel safe and secure.

Thanks in advance with hopes Munich Airport do the right thing going forward.

Disappointingly Rude and Condescending Customer Service

Airport facilities are nice, but customer service is borderline criminal and possibly racist. VAT tax refund process is a maze of unnecessary complexity designed to deny it by running out the clock before your flight (more info in next review). It is telling that most negative complaints about MUC are about customer service, and most of those complaints seem to be from minorities.

On Saturday, 21 January 2023 at around 9 AM, my wife, a Korean-American, went to the MUC airport Information Desk in Terminal 2, where she asked how to get to the Global Blue tax refund office (more on that below). The German woman on duty there immediately started rudely and condescendingly interrogating my wife about where she was going, did she have the items and receipts, what luggage did she have, how many items, etc. This at a basic INFO booth, not the Customs office. All the Info booth woman had to do was provide directions, jeez. There was an exchange between them after my wife told her she would not tolerate being disrespected. The woman came out of the info booth to yell at my wife, and that is when I became aware of the situation and got involved.

I asked the Info rep for her name and she refused. I asked for her customer rep number and she refused. I asked to speak to her supervisor and she refused. So I told her if she will not give me any information I would take a picture of her booth so MUC can find her for accountability of her actions (see pictures below of the Information booth in front of a BMW race car in Terminal 2). She immediately threatened to call the police and that I would go to jail. Now we have a plane to catch but after checking bags, I found the roaming Polizei and brought them down to the booth. She suddenly seemed surprised. She told her fairy tale about how my wife had been rude to HER after she "helpfully" gave my wife the info she sought. Yeah right. I told the Polizei that made no sense, why would my wife have been so upset if the Info rep had been courteous and provided directions as expected at an INFO BOOTH? The rep saw that things were not going her way with the Polizei, and suddenly the rep said she could call her supervisor. Oh thank you Ms. Info Booth Customer Rep! Only took me to bring the Polizei down AFTER I previously asked her to call her supervisor before I checked bags, which she previously refused to do.

I waited for her supervisor and he went into the booth and got her side - same fairy tale. I explained what happened and the supervisor - a man with a beard - was not very helpful. I asked for his name or customer rep number and he refused. I asked to speak with HIS supervisor and he refused, saying he has no supervisor. Yeah right. I asked to file a formal complaint and he said I was already doing so verbally with him. I told him I wanted to file a WRITTEN complaint in a formal IT system and he said he would do so himself. Yeah right. He kept saying the Info Rep was one of his best and maybe she had a bad day. So I did not get the warm and fuzzy that any accountability will occur. I got home and looked for the MUC complaint system online and lo and behold - there is none that I can find. I will continue to look and will be heard by MUC. I served in the US Army protecting Germany for 3.5 years and am severely disappointed at this treatment. My wife lived in Germany with me so we are savvy about the German culture - and this experience falls well below our expectations of German customer service.
