★☆☆☆☆Qualified for IRS Free File but ended up paying — extremely misleading experience

I used TaxSlayer to prepare my 2025 federal and State tax returns. Based on TaxSlayer's published IRS Free File eligibility requirements, I qualified for free federal and state filing.

However, during the preparation process, my account ended up in the paid Classic package. I could not find a straightforward way to return to the free filing option, even though my income was below the program's eligibility limit.

After spending considerable time preparing a complicated return, I was faced with paying unexpected fees to complete the filing. This was especially frustrating on the October 15 filing deadline, when starting over was not a realistic option.

My biggest complaint is the lack of transparency and the apparent inability to restore free filing eligibility once the software switches to a paid package.

I believe this experience was misleading and unfair to taxpayers who depend on the IRS Free File program. I would not recommend TaxSlayer based on my experience, and I am requesting a refund of the filing fees.

TaxSlayer conveniently had a duplicate Form 1099-NEC for $11,406 that I had to delete to avoid reporting the same income twice (I did not initiate a duplicate, that was their accounting). After removing the duplicate, I was unable to downgrade from the paid Classic package back to IRS Free File, despite meeting the eligibility requirements. TaxSlayer's own support documentation conveniently acknowledges that deleting a form that originally triggered an upgrade can prevent customers from reverting to the free package. This is a scam!!!

They don't have e file for ameded returns

They don't have e file for previous years amended returns. Its like they forgot AI exists and it takes hours to add new features. TaxAct has this feature. I paid $16 for amended return at another provided(FreeTaxUSA), and it costs $42 at tax slayer and they don't even e file it, but they don't tell you until after you have paid and completed your return. Its kinda scam ish to know show that you don't efile until after you've paid. I'll switch to another tax provider going forward.

The representative that helped me this…

The representative that helped me this afternoon at Tax Slayer customer service, Brandy 00315, went above and beyond to offer me the help I needed to fix the mess I made on the 2025 tax forms.
Brandy was so patient and knowledgeable. I was very frustrated and she was able to explain to me what I needed to do to fix the error.

not intuitive

It was not at all intuitive compared to two other softwares I have used. Much more room for user error. Luckily I knew what my child credit should be or I would have missed out on $3200 because by default you marked all my kids as non citizens when importing my info. I would not recommend this at all unless you, like me, need more S Corp shareholder options than other companies give.

Unreasonable agressive geo blocking

The system is ok. The service is generally good. My specific issue is your aggressive geo- blocking. There are 11 million U.S. citizens living permanently outside of the U.S. who are required to file taxes. You block foreign ip addresses. Your customer service (phone, Email, Social media) doesn't have any solutions. You are missing out on a lot of potential customers.

I filed for 2025

I filed for 2025, paid nearly $150, and am unable to access a copy. I've tried multiple times, but the program seems to think I have not input anything.

I need a copy in order to get a mortgage. No copy, no alternative, no home. I am VERY unhappy and will not be using your program again. There is nothing on the web site that I can find that can help me obtain a copy for my records.

I have used Taxslayer for two years and service has gone down.

I have used Taxslayer for two years. This year it had some serious problems. I could not get it into the logic as specified to be able to fix a rejected return. I could not get to where one had to put in a value from the prior tax year return for one's spouse. This caused the return to be rejected twice. And I think I have been charged a second filing fee. Then there is the problem of not being able to inform them of such a problem outside of coming here. Next, there was no way I could find to put into the State return that a payment had been made to the state (not an Estimated, but a direct payment to avoid a penalty). So the filing for this has to be mailed. So, beware.

Excellent support and easy to use

I use the basics of this tax program. I have been using Taxslayer for five years. This year, when I went to pay, I had several problems. I contacted support, and they were wonderful. They stayed with my issue until it was resolved. They found something on their end, and once the issue was resolved, my payment went through. I find this site easy to use with a clear interface. The price is reasonable. I recommend it.

Really poor communication

Really poor communication. There was an error with my extension to file and Taxslayer sent me one single email notifying me that there was an issue on the day I tried to file. Because of all the irrelevant emails that Taxslayer sends me around Tax Day, it got lost in the shuffle and I never saw it. They sent exactly zero follow up emails about the error with the extension to file. It's been over two months since the failure to file and I'm just now finding out that it never filed. On top of that, Taxslayer can't even tell me what the error was, just that there was some kind of error relating to some kind of unspecified thing, so the error could easily be repeated.

NEVER USE TAXSLAYER

I provided my information like I do every year with intuit but this time with taxslayer and was able to successfully file HOWEVER not only did tax slayer mess up a number that was put in by them BUT they FAILED to tell me how much everything was. So I got $200 less on my state return AND they took $200 to process my tax return when I selected the option to take the amount to file my return out of my return. Ain't no way it would've been over $200 to file my return if I simply paid for it right then and there. Lesson learned. NEVER USE TAX SLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unable to file return due to error on…

Unable to file return due to error on their software. Put in 3 requests for help (they say will be answered within 1 day) that were never answered. Called customer service, they said it could take a month or more before someone looked at problem. Asked for refund, they said it would take 2-3 weeks before someone could even review my request. Complete BS. Not sure they are a real company. Got refund from CC company.
