Long time user finally given to write about Fastmail

I think I must be a Fastmail user of at least 20 years by now. Why ... ? It just works exactly as described and if it doesn't the problem is fixed, pronto ... !! For the breadth of it's offering, it is very cost effective. I have no problems with paying for three years at a time. Email ( despite doomsayers from time to time ) remains such an integral part of our lives, it's comforting to know the service you rely upon is just so damned reliable ... !!

Responding the misleading and false feedback of October 18, 2024

I am responding to the feedback provided by Fastmail.com on October 18, 2024 with respect to my latest review describing the denigrating and demeaning behaviour of the CEO Bron Gondwana when I escalated my complaint under ticket PTN 1598876.

First of all, I already described the misconduct of Fastmail.com consisting in stealing credit card data and other info from customers. There are several reviews in Truspilot coinciding in that as well. Besides, in my many interactions I repeteadly requested Tyler Jones and Bron Gondwana the proof of the allegued fraud, which they never provided.

Fastmail has no legal team, no one of the listed personnel in their website is a lawyer, and even worst, no one has a legal background. It is a lie that my complaint was "carefully evaluated by our leadership team including our CEO to ensure a fair resolution". Rather contrary, not a single one of my worries was taken into account.

Fake Free Trial - A True "Free Scam"

Fastmail’s "free trial" is misleading. They list three plans (Individual, Duo, Family) all have free trial options, but after you log in, All Key features like creating aliases and connecting with 1Password are blocked, so you can’t even properly test the service, What’s the point of a trial if you can’t try any features?
Fastmail’s trial is a scam to hook you, then push you into paying, (Shortly after trail ends, the account will be deleted, but you have access to more buttons during the free trail, besides Individual, Duo, Family you can also choose the basic one for 4$ to save your account)
Thankfully, you can delete you account (at least that part is truly free, I guess!).

Hey there Yassine. In order to prevent trial accounts from being abused, we limit some features that trial accounts can use. In some cases to unlock additional features, we will ask for your mobile phone number so we can send a verification code via SMS. In some rarer cases, we will require you to fully pay for your account before unlocking those features.

We have details on the limitations of trial accounts here: https://www.fastmail.help/hc/articles/1500000277442

If you face any difficulty with verifying via SMS (or anything else!) please let our support team know, and we'll gladly get you sorted. https://fastmail.com/support

Very professionally and competently run service

I switched from free (gmail) to paid (fastmail). It was a good move. I had a heavily customized Gnus/Emacs environment and was able to not only reproduce all of it but make significant improvements to my workflow. The main reason for switching at first was gmail at times being intolerably slow with my client. Fastmail is just the opposite. Also, fastmail's technical aspects are easier to work with. The results were such that I switched my calendar and some file storage with equally fruitful results. The underlying reason for all of this is the highly professional and technically competent manner in which fastmail is run ... and, you can get individual support from reliable and knowledgeable tech staff. It's all turned out to be well worth the money and I've extended my subscription to three years from one.

Best email service ever

I have been using Fastmail for my personal and business email for almost three years now. Fastmail and 1Password are the only two subscriptions I would never even think to cancel, and they work wonderfully together.

Fastmail allows me to have email addresses for up to 100 domains, meaning I can create professional emails for all my needs and side projects.

Also, the unlimited number of Masked Emails put a stop to all spam emails. I create a unique random email from my domain and give that to every service I sign up for. The integration with 1Password makes that as easy as creating a random password. If I ever receive a spam email, I know which service leaked my email, and with one click, I can stop receiving emails to that address. I already caught 2 Greek services that leaked my email either on purpose or by incompetence.

Finally, the support is excellent! I needed them three times and they responded in less than half an hour. On top of that, the last time I contacted them was Sunday, and they managed to solve my issue in less than an hour by exchanging a few emails.

I highly recommend Fastmail to anyone who takes their email address seriously and doesn’t want to be the product of a “free” service like Gmail.

Fastmail's Deceptive Practices: More Like Ransomware Than a Service

I recently signed up for Fastmail's 30-day free trial, expecting to test out their services before committing to a paid plan. However, my experience has been extremely disappointing, and I believe their business practices are bordering on a scam.

Here’s what happened:

During the trial period, I began receiving crucial emails, including important verification and account-related information. Suddenly, Fastmail restricted access to these emails, and I was prompted to upgrade my account before I could view the contents. These emails were not part of some promotional or spam folder—they were essential to my personal and professional accounts.

It feels as though Fastmail deliberately filters and withholds important content to pressure users into paying for an upgrade. This tactic is highly manipulative and unethical, as they essentially hold your emails hostage. This isn’t just a breach of trust, it’s eerily similar to ransomware behavior: withholding access to vital information until a payment is made.

What makes this even more frustrating is that, living in Ethiopia, none of the payment methods Fastmail accepts are available in my country. PayPal doesn't operate here, and no local bank offers debit cards that support international payments. Despite reaching out to customer support multiple times and explaining the issue, their responses have been slow and unhelpful, leaving me unable to access crucial information.

Fastmail advertises a free trial, but when they restrict access to your content unless you upgrade, it’s anything but free. This bait-and-switch tactic is misleading and feels like a well-crafted strategy to lock users in before they've had a chance to properly evaluate the service.

To anyone considering Fastmail, be cautious. Their trial period is designed to create a sense of urgency, forcing you to upgrade or lose access to important emails. It's a predatory practice that should not be tolerated, and I encourage others to be wary of falling into this trap.

If you’re looking for transparency, fairness, and a trustworthy email service, Fastmail is far from it.

We offer a free 30-day trial so that you can test our features to see if Fastmail is a good fit.

It’s important for us to have security measures in place to ensure that our service isn’t abused, which would cause issues for our customers. Various limits on trial accounts are part of these security measures. This prevents activities like sending spam and phishing, and to keep scammers from receiving fraud-related emails. If we allowed spam or phishing to be sent from our servers, more and more spam reports over time would compromise the long-term sending quality of our IP addresses. That would, in turn, affect our ability to deliver mail for all of our customers who are using Fastmail for its intended use, and it's important to us that we prevent that from happening.

We’re pleased to see that you contacted our support team, and it looks like we resolved your concern. If you need additional support, please reach out—just send an update to your support ticket, and we will gladly continue to work with you on this.

Hi Bo. We've requested more information from you so we can confirm that this was addressed in alignment with our anti-fraud policies.

If we allow spam to be sent from our servers, more and more spam reports over time would compromise the long-term sending quality of our IP addresses. That would then negatively impact our ability to deliver mail for all of our customers who are using Fastmail for its intended use. When we detect this, we take necessary action to prevent further misuse of our service.

The Best Service with Superhero-Level Support

From a technical standpoint, Fastmail is my top pick right now. No matter what I want to set up or which exotic email client I try to connect, everything just works seamlessly. Their range of features is also quite impressive. I'm a pretty seasoned email user with addresses across all the major providers today, and Fastmail matches or even outshines many of them.

Fastmail's customer support is just fantastic. These folks manage to respond within hours, regardless of the day or time, even to seemingly simple or silly questions. They patiently, clearly, and kindly guide you through your issues, holding your hand every step of the way and showing genuine interest in helping. I've never encountered this level of support from any other email provider I've tried. This team of superheroes genuinely wants to help you, and it shows. I think even if the service (somehow) got significantly worse, I’d still stick with them just because of their support team.

Exceptional Support That Goes Above and Beyond

We recently faced an unexpected email issue with messages from a governmental office in Costa Rica. From the start, the FastMail team jumped in with exceptional dedication and persistence. They thoroughly investigated the issue and even went the extra mile by contacting the institution directly. Their collaboration ultimately revealed that the problem wasn’t on FastMail’s end.

Although I initially felt a bit frustrated by the response time, I later understood that this was a complex, multi-tiered issue requiring in-depth troubleshooting. Given the level of personalized support we received, I can’t imagine Google or Microsoft offering this kind of service. FastMail’s commitment and professionalism have earned my loyalty for life.

Hi Christian.

It sounds like your ticket has been escalated up to Tier 3 support, and those do definitely take a bit longer than the hour or so it usually takes to get a response from Tier 1 support, as there are fewer people with the particular expertise your ticket needs, and the subject matter of the ticket generally is much tricker and requires more investigation.

We've just requested information from you--please let us know your ticket number. We'd love to make sure you're getting the help you deserve from us!

ZERO Privacy

ZERO Privacy

This company WILL read your email, they will analyze your usage, and they will lock your account if they even sniff impropriety, as if they are somehow entitled to deliver judgement on what is right and wrong. Oh the moral entitlement this company exhibits... So angering and likely borderline illegal (certainly illegal in countries with privacy protections).

If you're OK with an inbox where every single message is reviewed by a "monitoring team" (their language not mine). Then go ahead.

If you're not OK with this, then don't even think about signing up... If you have an account and this was never made clear to you, well now is a good time to reconsider your choice of email provider.

My account with them lasted one day, before being flagged by said "monitoring team". And on top of that, they then request "justification" of my mail usage in order to regain account access. I told them I certainly don't owe them a justification for my private emails. What is this... the Internet police in the form of a nameless greedy corporation? No thank you.

I hope their entire leadership team reads this review, and reflects for just a second on the privacy transgressions they allow this "monitoring team* to commit. Who is monitoring the monitoring team? How do you feel knowing you've deputized common employees to make judgements on an individual?

This company has no business being in existence, providing what must be a private means of communication as a basic right of the Internet. Simply shameful. 0 stars.

2 1/2 Stars for This Emailer

After about eight years with this emailer [Australia - Five eyes member]
I had enough. The good - an excellent interface and easy to d/l pictures
and images.

The issues: you will experience one or twice per year a service issue, which will require tech support, some with sixth grade education. The uglies are the inability to keep the incoming message column fixed, as it takes up too much space and can and does interfere with reading some emails.

Another major problem are fonts size. If you use a larger than standard font
and need to correct a text or spelling and then return to where you left off,
the fonts will always return to the default size. Major pain in the rear.

Another issue are the paragraphs being disjointed. Every other sentence
is quite often short in scope. They never fixed this issue, after two service
emails.
The worst happen before I finally terminated them. I lost three critical emails,
which I even had starred. I look everywhere, but they were gone and Fastmail could not recover them. This was the last straw.

There are much better providers than Fastmail, which have never given me
any issues. Proton.com and Mailfence.

Ga Day, mate !

Fastmail does not give you a free trial!

Fastmail advertises 'Try Us For Free!' promising a 30-day free trial. They take your credit card and information to set up an account. Only then do they tell you there's no free trial, but don't worry--they'll add on a free month in your first year. When I saw what it would cost to add my wife as a second user, I decided it was not for me and closed my account. Did I get a free trial? No. Did I get my money back? No. In the jargon of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, this is a 'deceptive practice.' Ordinary people might use a different term.
