Read the fine print!

For their travel insurance it used to be my go to. I purchased it for several trips and the one time I had to use it, the experience was good.

The problem came when I was looking for an insurance that would cover me also in my home country. Since I travel a lot and even in the status, go back and forth between different states. In the USA, insurance is meant to be for a single state. So I liked the idea for a multi state, multi country policy.

While expensive the Genki Resident program they recommended to me sounded great. I told them exactly my requirements.

The problem came about, almost a year down the road, when I started to ask a few questions about coverage. I don't go to the doctor often and wanted to get some answers on waiting periods for vision correct (2 years on this policy). It was only then that I was told that covered, including waiting periods don't actually start until you leave your home country! So I paid almost $4,000 that year for nothing. I wasn't actually covered because I had to cancel my travel plans for that year.

They say this is in the fine print and that the representative should let you know but they did not and I asked enough questions that they knew the type of policy I needed. So I wasted $4,000 and had no coverage. I won't use them again for any other type of coverage because I won't do business with companies who behave like that. So I thought it only fair to let people know my experience.

If you just need it for travel, it may be fine but keep in mind that in the end, they are a business and look after their bottom line and won't always have your back.

Due to the importance of having medical insurance and the fact that I went a year without coverage, while paying for it, that could be a very dangerous and expensive situation, should there have been an emergency. They should have made it known up front.

Update 12/1/2026:

It doesn't appear you can directly respond to the companies response so just leaving an addendum to my existing review.

I appreciate their response but they do note that they didn't mention in our communications about the need to leave the country before coverage beings. The first time that was mentioned was when I asked an additional covered, nearly a year later. The fact remains that I still paid nearly $4,000 but was not covered. Not a single cent was offered in reimbursement, nor the option to put that towards future coverage, now that I am aware of the situation. So for all intents and purposes, I donated quite a bit of money to them. With the number of back and forth communications we had, I believe that should have been specifically mentioned. So my original rating still stands.

Reply from Genki - Insurance for Nomads

Hey Christopher,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review, and also for having trusted Genki for several of your past trips. I am really sorry that your experience with Genki Resident left you feeling like you had paid for coverage you could not use, especially something as important as health insurance.

Genki Resident is international health insurance for people who live abroad long-term. This is how the product is described in the documentation and insurance conditions. It is not designed to replace domestic health insurance for someone who remains in their home country for an extended period. We had not anticipated or encountered US citizens using this insurance for domestic long-term travel within the USA.

After receiving your review, we went back through our communication with you. We can see that we did explain the home-country coverage limit of 180 days per calendar year and the special treatment of the USA, but we did not explicitly discuss that full coverage only applies once you are living or traveling abroad. Given your travel pattern that year (especially that you ultimately did not travel abroad as planned), this aspect understandably became very important.

From a contractual standpoint, our insurance partner (who is the legal counterparty for Genki Resident) confirmed that this requirement is part of the product description and is stated in the Consumer Conditions: Coverage is tied to a stay abroad, and home-country coverage is limited to temporary returns during the insured period. That said, we see how this can still be overlooked in practice, and we understand now that you had a different expectation.

One important clarification regarding your specific concern: The waiting period for benefits such as vision correction starts from the start date of your insurance, not from the date you leave your home country. We understand that some wording in the Consumer Conditions can be interpreted differently, which is why, in Genki Native (the successor product to Genki Resident), we have made this point more explicit. If you ever run into a situation where this is interpreted differently in your case, please contact us so we can support you in clarifying it with our insurance partner.

As you mentioned, your insurance has been active for almost a year. Independent of the above, home country coverage is limited to 180 days per calendar year, so coverage in your home country would still have ended a while ago.

We fully agree that customers must know in advance whether they are properly covered. We strongly encourage all customers to read the insurance conditions carefully to make sure the product fits their needs. We also see it as our responsibility to make those conditions as clear and easy to understand as possible. Genki Resident is no longer available, and many of the improvements we made in Genki Native came from exactly this kind of feedback.

Thank you again for sharing your experience. If you have any further questions about your insurance, please feel free to reach out to our customer support team so we can go through them with you in detail.

Stay healthy,
Marc

Misleading dental coverage

I’ve been using Genki because they market themselves as nomad-friendly, but when it comes to actual claims, they hide behind their underwriter (Squarelife) and ridiculous technicalities.

I cracked a perfectly healthy tooth on a hidden bone in my food in Egypt. It was an unexpected, sudden event. Squarelife denied the claim, stating that biting down on a hard object is an "occlusal injury" and not an accident.

According to them, for dental to be covered, you basically need to be hit in the face, fall off a bike, or be in a car crash. They explicitly told me that unless there is "impact to the jaw/face" or injury to other body parts, a broken tooth doesn't count.

The "Emergency Dental" coverage is practically useless for real-life scenarios. If you think you’re covered for eating mishaps, you aren’t. Avoid.

UPDATE: after this review they decided to refund me. Great but not the way it should work.

Hey Leonardo,

I understand that your dental treatment needed because of an accident was not covered under Genki Traveler, which was unexpected to you.

It was unexpected to us as well!

We have already discussed your case with the insurer Squarelife. They agreed to review it again and ultimately approved your claim.

I apologize that your issue was not resolved sooner when you reached out to our customer support. We will look into how we can resolve such issues faster in the future.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

under scrutiny

The same day I contacted them asking if they cover my surgery they informed me that my premium will double and started an investigation in my medical history, it took 2 weeks to know if my surgery was covered or not without any reply from them in this period. I was literally shocked. They claim, that this are unfortunate coincidences and finally will cover me ... I remain therefore in standby with my review considering that my plan is one of the best cost-effective products I can see on the market and hoping for the best.

Hey Michele,
I understand that you are surprised that your monthly price has changed.

The price of Genki Resident, like any other international health insurance, can change for two reasons:
1. As a customer gets older, the risk of medical conditions & costs increases. For that reason, insurance prices change for all customers based on their age.
2. As the average medical costs go up or down worldwide (for example, due to inflation), insurance prices do as well to account for these changes. This also applies to all customers.

In your case, unfortunately, both price increases fall within the same month, which causes a steeper price increase for you.

The price of your insurance does not change because of a claim. Claims have no impact on the price of the insurance.

If you have any further questions, please let our support team know at help@genki.world.

Slow to Reimburse, but Patience is Key

I have been using Genki for over a year and a half. I submitted 4 reimbursements, which took about 7 weeks to be paid, but they were all reimbursed. I didn't actually realize that they were in my PayPal account and thought they were still outstanding so I initially wrote a scathing review of their services and communication, but I'm withdrawing that. My apologies for the communication.

Please rest assured that hundreds of claim payouts are processed by DR-WALTER every month, and situations like this, while rare, are taken seriously. If any issues arise with payment methods or processing times, both Genki and DR-WALTER will reach out directly to affected customers with an update.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and will keep pressing for a resolution as quickly as possible.

SCAM SCAM SCAM!

SCAM SCAM SCAM!
Do NOT get the insurance, they are just a using it as a cover.
I had a medical emergency come up, horrible neck strain that required multiple hospital visits for rehab.
Genki just tried to find ways to say it was pre-existing, when it was not. I even sent 2 medical certificates, and they just used garbage language not to pay out.
Is this has been worse, I would left in a dire situation.

Hey Manni,
I am sorry to hear that you have neck issues and that your claim was rejected.

In the medical report that you sent, the doctor very clearly stated that this is the same issue you already had 8 months before your insurance coverage started.

Genki Traveler does not cover health issues where you experienced symptoms, sought medical advice, received a diagnosis, or underwent treatment within one year before your insurance starts. An exclusion of pre-existing health conditions is intentional in all travel health insurance products, not just ours.

Because this is a very important exclusion for customers to understand, we disclose this very prominently on our website before customers sign up.

If you believe that your doctor made a mistake in their report, please reach out to them for a correction. In that case, your claim can be reviewed again, but we cannot guarantee a different outcome.

Please reach out to help@genki.world if you have general questions regarding your coverage, or respond to the insurer if you would like to add information to your claim.

AI answer is not good

Genki is asking to contact them in case of problems. But if someone has an emergency, no one has the time to contact anyone, Just go to a clinic or hospital.

I recently had a high fiver, I wrote to Genki that it might be Dengue as I am in Bali / Indonesia and I do not have other symptoms besides very high fever.

Here is what they AI automatic email answer wrote

Regarding dengue coverage: While dengue is generally covered under our travel insurance if it requires medically necessary treatment during your coverage period, we cannot guarantee specific treatment coverage without reviewing your individual case.

Later on I wrote again and always the AI replies. Luckily it said in the end that all is covered.
No idea if the request of reimbursement is working or not, have not initiated that.

Hey Loris,
I am sorry to hear that you were sick and that our communication got you confused.

In an emergency, getting medical treatment immediately is the highest priority. Insurance coverage does not change that, as it does change the need for urgent medical treatment. For that reason, we do not ask customers to contact us in an emergency. Immediate medical treatment to save your life and health comes first.

Our customer support helps with general insurance questions and procedures. Please refer to the Insurance Conditions and your Certificate of Insurance. These documents list all contact information and who to contact under what circumstances.

In our immediate and automated first support response, the AI correctly explained that dengue is generally covered, that you should not delay seeking medical attention, and that you can call or email the 24/7 emergency assistance hotline for urgent advice from a medical professional even before going to a doctor or hospital.

Please let us know at help@genki.world what led to the impression that we must be contacted first before seeking medical treatment. We will review our communication to see how we can reduce further confusion.

Please note that neither we nor the insurer can guarantee coverage of a specific case upfront without receiving a medical report from the doctor first. The insurer needs sufficient medical information and context before they are able to make such an assessment. For that reason, we can only state what is covered in general: Dengue fever that began after the insurance coverage started.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Genki robbed me of €5000 premium + €22K fees!

I never write bad reviews, this is my first.

I'm a nomad. A normal dude, late 30s, SW Engineer, like to explore the world.
I also like to be properly insured.

I choose GENKI as health insurance.
I paid €300 / month, for about 2 years.

Their 2024 website registration-form had ONE “other disease” box … no way to list a past surgery I had, not a chance, not even a plain text field to write in stuff. I disclosed 100% I could.

After a year+ abroad, I had to get checked and needed an emergency surgery with a follow-up surgery. Both got denied by GENKI and I nearly died from it while waiting for their "support team" … kidding, in no way it can be called "support".

I organised and gave GENKI every single file they asked for, from doctors, hospitals, past insurance companies, … it was a huge task, all while in huge pain, waited months for approval.

Then, GENKI: “Policy void from day 1. We keep your money.”
Me: " … "

Again, their own form made full disclosure impossible.

So they then used my files against me, canceled retroactively, even blacklisted me in HIS, which is the worst you can do to a human being who is in a bad shape needing a health insurance.

The HIS-act alone shows the true face of GENKI.

In short: Pay, get sick, wait, comply, wait, … they cancel your policy. No refund. No help. Let abroad to suffer or die.

I had to pay everything myself, so WHY exactly did I get this all so great NOMAD HEALTH INSURER?
I was stupid ->
I trusted their ads (paid).
I trusting Influencers (paid).
All PAID content … it's all total bullshit, don't fall for it, do a quick research and you'll figure out.

Unfortunately when I registered with them, there were not so many horrifying stories about GENKI around, now there are, lots … what a scam.

GENKI = not insurance.
GENKI= Lying bastards ( I even met one of those shitheads abroad … fits right into the scheme) hiding behind German law.

Be warned, avoid at all cost … or cancel while you can.

Hi Martin,

We’d like to clarify some important points regarding how Genki Native works and how applications are assessed.

Genki Native is a comprehensive international health insurance designed for long-term coverage. As with any full medical insurance, all applications are subject to medical underwriting, which requires applicants to fully and truthfully disclose all relevant medical information in the questionnaire.

During the application process, there is a mandatory checkbox that must be ticked before submitting the application. By checking this box, applicants confirm that they understand the insurance may later be terminated if any medical questions are not answered completely or accurately.

If relevant medical information or conditions are omitted, intentionally or unintentionally, the insurer (Squarelife) is legally entitled to void the policy retroactively due to a duty of disclosure breach, as required under European insurance law. This is standard practice across the industry and not specific to Genki Native.

It’s also important to note that Genki does not have the authority to alter or overturn underwriting or coverage decisions made by the insurer. The decision in your case was made by Squarelife based on the medical documentation and the applicable legal framework.

If you would like us to verify any details with the insurer or ensure your case information is fully accurate, please contact us directly at help@genki.world.

Violate their own compensation rules

My family and I was loyal clients almost 2 years, I ones use insurance, when I had sharp pain in my tooth. I asked support in whatsapp, they told me it is ok, root canal treatment insurance covered. I made treatment, wait documents from clinic long time and than when I decided sent a documents my another tooth started had sharp pain. I asked support it will be another case or no, they told me it is another case and I can sent all documents toghether after treatment. When I sent documents from clinic company told me it is one case. How it can be one case? Different between compensation 3 times less. I dont understand. They just ignore information about different time to treat, different scenario, different tooth. Skip information from clinic. Just send me same information about dental treatment, which they violated. They sent different cases different 500 euro covered. BUT IT IS DIFFERENT TIME, DESCRIPTION FROM DOCTOR, DIFFERENT TEETH. Felt safe and protected in more risky locations

It was the second time that I was relying on Genki during travels. During my previous longer trip I got covered by them several times without a hassle, when I had health issues. This second time I was greatful that they also cover in more risky locations such as Kashmir where no other local insurances covered for me. I felt safe and protected during the whole trip! Thanks for that again!

Do not recommend Genki

Bought global health insurance (Genki traveller) as a young woman solo travelling.

I wanted to feel that I could seek medical advice should I fall unwell during my travels. A minor cold turned into a prolonged cough for 3+ weeks (coughing up blood), so I went to get seen thinking that my insurance would cover it (given it covers consultations / check ups). My claim was denied and Genki have been awful with providing any support - speaking to a human agent is just as helpful as speaking to the AI bot (ie, not helpful at all). Really disappointing and wish there were more options for young people travelling. I now don’t feel that I can seek medical attention abroad. I wouldn’t recommend using Genki and advise travellers to find an alternative that will hopefully be more supportive and actually insure you!

Hi Rhiannon,

Thank you for giving us your feedback

Genki Traveler is travel health insurance that can be used for stays abroad of up to one year. As a standard, travel health insurance is a temporary type of insurance; it does not cover pre-existing conditions, meaning any symptoms, treatments, or diagnoses that occurred before the start of the insurance. These terms are clearly explained on our website, during purchase, and in the official insurance documents.

Claim decisions are made by the insurer, based on these conditions and the medical information provided by the treating physician and submitted by the customer. Our support helps customers understand their coverage and supports communication with our partners, but we cannot influence the insurer’s decision.

If you need any clarification about Genki Traveler's benefits and exclusions, our support team is always available at help@genki.world.

Choose another option. Very disappointed.

While I was with Genki for several years as a nomad I never had an issue with filing simple claims. I switched to their international plan which is actually quite expensive. I submitted a claim for glasses and they flagged that I didn’t answer a simple question on the medical questionnaire correctly and denied the claim. They offered me an exclusion or to cancel. I accepted the exclusion but then the way in which the questions were written on the questionnaire concerned me. I asked for clarity and never got a clear answer because at this point I was concerned I missed something. It is very unclear on what you need to report and their answers are elusive. I submitted a claim for a more serious issue and instead of covering it, still minuscule compared to the cost, they put it under review. At this point I just went ahead and canceled. The amount of money you spend for the plan compared to the payout and especially if you live abroad does not make sense. Find another company that is clear and up front with their services. There are too many options to deal with a company this insensitive and with no one to speak to directly by phone.

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

We understand how important it is to receive clear information when it comes to health insurance and claim decisions. To clarify, Genki is not the insurer but rather your support partner; we assist customers in understanding their coverage and help coordinate communication with the insurer, Squarelife, who is responsible for medical assessments and claim decisions.

In this case, your question required a formal review by the insurer to ensure accuracy, which caused a delay. We sincerely regret the wait and can assure you that we pushed for a response as quickly as possible. Solid insurance but conditions keep getting worse

I’ve been with Genki for almost two years. Luckily, I haven’t needed to use the insurance yet. When I first signed up for Genki Explorer, the coverage and conditions were excellent.

Over time, though, the terms have become less favorable, and recently the prices went up again. I switched to the $50 deductible, which lowered my premium slightly, but it’s still frustrating to see conditions worsen while costs rise.

Even as someone who hasn’t made any claims, I feel the honest users are also paying the price.

Hi Alexander,

Thank you for being a loyal customer for almost two years. 🙏

The recent premium updates with Genki Explorer aren’t just about misuse by a few customers; they’re largely driven by rising medical costs across popular destinations worldwide. To keep comprehensive coverage viable and still reasonably priced, both insurers and customers have to adapt to that reality.

Switching to a $50 deductible is one option we offer to help keep premiums in the same price range after the recent premium update with Genki Explorer.

Long delays

Long delays, poor communication, but eventual partial progress

I have been insured with Genki Explorer, administered by DR-WALTER, and recently submitted a reimbursement claim for a hospital delivery in May 2025. Unfortunately, my experience has been extremely frustrating.

My claim has been stuck in processing for months. They requested for mailing them the required documents (invoices, proof of payment, physician letter, medical records), and it took them almost a month to reply.

And then they also claimed not to have the physician’s letter, though it was included in the mailed documents.

And each time, I had to explain and re-confirm information they already had.

The lack of coordination between DR-WALTER, Genki, and MD Medicus has caused unnecessary stress and long delays in reimbursement. While I hope the claim will eventually be processed, the communication has been slow, confusing, and unhelpful.

And I still haven't got my bill reimbursed and the hospital has not got their payment yet after 4.5 months.

Hey Tien Hsin,

Thanks for raising this.

For Genki Explorer, DR-WALTER manages claims and related reimbursements. In a small number of higher-amount or complex cases they request original invoices and medical reports by mail; this is not the case with the majority of claims, but it can add time.

Be reminded also that inpatient care (hospitalizations and surgeries) is covered by direct billing to the hospital so the insured does not have to make advanced payments and request reimbursement.

If communication has stalled with our partner our support team is always available to help move things forward. Please write us at help@genki.world so we can support you further.
