Acronis Affected by the Microsoft Windows 11 April Update

After the Microsoft Windows 11 April "Patch Tuesday" updates, I was no longer able to make Acronis True Image 2025 image backups on any of my three PCs. After trying for several days to no avail, I contacted Acronis customer support. After filling out the case form, the very next morning I had a lengthy reply describing the most likely cause of the problem, how it was being remediated and contact information. As it turns out, Microsoft installed a patch in their update to block VSS module (as well as others), that was critical in Acronis functioning properly. A week later problem was resolved and my application is functioning as it should. In the meantime, I received multiple communications from Acronis Support inquiring about my reported problem. Acronis has a great product (I have used it for over 17 years), and an outstanding customer support department.

They do not support their old versions of software

They do not support their old software. They want you to buy their new yearly subscription products that you have to pay for yearly. I probably only needed to used this software once every 4 to 5 years, so why would I buy a yearly subscription. I have maybe 5 purchased licensed copies of their older software on my many computers that are no good anymore. I have found better software now, and some for free.
Acronis software is off my list to ever purchase again. You will never keep loyal customers by doing things like this.

Hello Bob,

We understand your concern, especially if your usage pattern is occasional rather than continuous.

At the same time, it’s important to clarify that the licensing and support model has evolved over several product generations, and this is not a recent change. Acronis products follow a defined support lifecycle, where each version is supported for a certain period and then gradually transitions to limited or self-service support.

With perpetual licenses, customers receive the right to use a specific version indefinitely. However, ongoing updates, compatibility with newer operating systems, and full technical support are tied to the active lifecycle of that version. This means that over time, older versions may no longer receive updates or full support as the ecosystem evolves. [Call with...Recording | Video]
Each customer effectively makes a choice at the time of purchase:

- either continue using a specific version long-term
- or move to newer versions (including subscription-based ones) to benefit from continuous updates, compatibility, and security improvements

We understand that this model may not fit every use case, particularly for users who only need backup functionality infrequently, and we appreciate your feedback on that.

Acronis Support

I have been using Acronis since 2018 but recently experienced backup failure on a new workstation. It eventually transpired that the problem was a windows VSS timeout issue. However, when I contacted Acronis support they could not have been more helpful.
When the problem persisted over a series of failed backups, the issue was escalated to a higher level team who coordinated remotely until the issue was resolved. Reassuring to know that this level of support exists.

Home office backups were no good

I purchased their home office product 2 years ago and my laptop died about 6 months ago. I tried to restore to another laptop from the Acronis backup but it wouldn't allow me to open the files. At one time, a long time ago, Acronis saved my data and I could actually get answers to problems from their help desk. Last year, no solutions, no help, no access to my backed up data. Acronis has become like Microsoft, too big, too complicated. I do not trust Acronis with my data backups. I don't recommend their home office product. It was a waste of money.

Hi,

I understand your frustration — however, the behaviour you’re describing is expected.

Backup archives created by Acronis products are not designed to be opened or browsed without the application installed, as they rely on proprietary formats and components to ensure data integrity and consistency.

In addition, based on your description, it sounds like you are using an older (legacy) version. This can lead to compatibility issues when restoring data to a different system, especially if there are differences in hardware or operating system.

To proceed, I would recommend:

- Installing a supported version of Acronis software
- and, if the issue persists, contacting Acronis Support so they can assist with accessing or restoring your backup data

Best regards.

Acronis provides a great service and a great product

Acronis provides a great service. They can transfer both data and programs and drivers from one computer to another. It makes getting a new computer less painful. If you care about your data and want minimal pain in transferring to a new computer, you should consider buying Acronis True Image. They also offer malware protection.
