Avast

Avast - Decent Protection, But Pushy (4/5 Stars)
Avast offers solid, reliable protection that does a great job catching malware and keeping my machine safe from common threats, which is its main job. Installation was quick and the free version covers the basics effectively. For core antivirus functionality, it’s certainly competent. However, the experience is consistently hampered by its aggressive marketing. The interface feels bloated, and the software is constantly bombarding me with intrusive pop-ups urging me to upgrade to the paid features like the VPN or cleanup tool. These notifications often appear even when I'm using a full-screen application. It also feels a bit heavy-handed on system resources compared to other options I've tried. If you can tolerate the constant sales pitches and occasional slowdown, the underlying security is good. If you want a quiet, lightweight experience, look elsewhere.

Avoid Avast at all costs, it's like installing extra ads on your computer

Avast is a company that is very spammy. They constantly send you messages on your computer with pop-up windows and messages in your email to upgrade and buy more products, even when you've already purchased a paid product. It's like paying for Adware to be installed on your computer, ads that are popping up all the time.

I definitely DO NOT recommend installing this product to protect for elderly parents. My parent gets confused by the popup ads and has purchased several Avast products they do not need. I feel like now I need to protect my parent from Avast.

Also, to cancel a subscription, you need to chat online with someone where they try to convince you to continue, or stall for time. My chat lasted 45 min to cancel. Who has 45 minutes to waste just asking for a cancellation and refund? For a task that should take 5 minutes.

After you've received your refund, I recommend signing into your Avast account online and deleting your Avast account. Otherwise, it's very likely you'll be receiving more messages, or they will use your payment information to renew a subscription you don't want and had already cancelled.

Good functionality with aggressive ads

The product offers good functionality. The application's usability can be improved. Some settings are hard to find. At the end of the test period, the SW tries to frighten the user with a lot of pop-up windows and tries to convince to pay for additional features in a way that I don't like.

Avast premium software review

I am a computer network and business consultant. I have always liked the free version of avast as many people that I know have used it have had a good experience with it. This is where it gets tricky. Once you have the free version installed it gives you pop ups saying that you're exposed and tries to scare you into upgrading which in my opinion it's very borderline of being a deceptive business practice. Additionally, just like everything day and age, they made changes to their support staff and now it is very difficult to call or chat with someone easily which is important for good customer service. I tried to google the best way for avast support and it was like a merrygo round to try to get an answer. Avast is very happy to take your money but when it comes time to try and get a refund they are often very confrontational and do not cooperate. Anyone using this product I advise you to take screenshot of the install if you're using premium.
That way, if there is a problem. you have the docommentation to show proof of purchase for purposes of disputing with your credit card company or bank. I have had extensive experience with many different users using avast premium and having problems with their machines running very slowly or other issues and it is also very pricey. I know that avast is familiar with these problems as I have discussed them with numerous technicians. I wish avast would do the right thing and resolve these issues and for the company to show the customers that they care and they want to make the best product.

Be wary of buying something already installed

Make no mistake, Avast’s products are really good. But that cannot be said about their staff.
It was on 6 July 2025 that I re subscribed to Avast Driver Updater.
It was for a 2 year subscription at £74.99 minus a discount of £34.43, a total of £40.56
On various dates over the past week that I have been sent emails, and pop-ups on my PC screen asking me to pay again. The fact that my 2year subscription began less than 3 months previously appears to have disappeared from their records. - And in fact, I had forgotten that I had paid for it only recently too.
I was just about to fill in my card details that I realised I had paid for this product. I had been so trusting of them.
But no more. Avast is being run by scammers. That’s such a pity, considering how good the product is. Obviously, I have become alert to any email - or pop-up from Avast that appears on my PC screen. I won’t be fooled again.
I advise all those who have any Avast products installed on their devices to be very wary, check the details of payments before you sign up for something already installed on your device. Avast is not as trustworthy as you might think.

I've finally moved away from Avast…

I've finally moved away from Avast after sticking by them for well over 10 years. What used to be a fantastic anti-virus is now plagued by endless advertisements, pop-ups and interruptions for its Avast Premium Service regardless of your settings.

Even if you follow their own guides and turn off every setting regarding the above, they will still be pushed.

It started with the odd few I could ignore where it would tell me I have a vulnerability, do a scan, then show a discounted advertisement for its premium service to "help" you.

But this has amped up to daily interruptions despite me triple checking my settings and in spite of Silent Mode, unticking the boxes for "Offers" and various other notifications, its been endless. (The link the reply to people with on Trustpilot on how to turn off notifications makes 0 difference, they will not prevent Avast pushing its paid service at you.)

The final straw was yesterday where it created a loop of saying I had 11 days until my free license expired, and trying to renew it would be page after page of "are you /sure/ you don't want to upgrade to paid?" before taking you back to the home page where, lo and behold, it still says my license will expire and encourages me to loop again and again.

I've uninstalled and downloaded a new free anti-virus software. The silence from the pop-ups has been bliss...

A Reliable and User-Friendly Antivirus…

A Reliable and User-Friendly Antivirus Solution

I’ve been using Avast Antivirus for some time now, and overall I’m very impressed with the experience. The software is easy to install, runs smoothly in the background, and provides a strong sense of security without being overly intrusive. I especially appreciate the clean, intuitive interface that makes it simple to run scans, check reports, and adjust settings.

The real-time protection has been solid, catching suspicious files and blocking potential threats quickly. I also like the added features such as the Wi-Fi Inspector and Ransomware Shield, which go beyond basic antivirus and provide extra layers of protection.

Performance-wise, Avast does a good job of staying light on system resources compared to some other antivirus programs I’ve tried. It rarely slows down my computer, even when running a full scan.

That said, there’s a bit of room for improvement. The pop-ups promoting upgrades or additional products can feel a little frequent at times. I understand Avast offers a free version and needs to encourage upgrades, but toning down the frequency would make the experience even better.

Overall, Avast is a dependable and well-rounded antivirus solution that balances ease of use, strong protection, and extra security features. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a trustworthy antivirus program.

One of the sneakiest upselling companies

One of the sneakiest companies on the Internet. Their software might be decent but their approach to selling it is not. I installed the free version for my elderly relative a few years ago and disabled all pop ups so he wouldn't have to worry about additional information. That didn't stop Avast from their up selling of various add-ons through relentless pop-ups. My elderly relative has short term memory issues and naturally assumed that an honourable company like Avast was there for him.

Not so, they sold him every individual plan going, for add-ons he didn't want or need, through their relentless pop ups. He never even installed or used the VPNs or browser extension or any of the other needless extras. What's worse is they sold him the same add-ons multiple times, including in Euro and GBP currency, often just 3-5 days after the last time he bought them. Over €400 total in the last 12 months.Back in May, I helped him to contact Avast. They huffed and puffed and eventually offered to consolidate his subscriptions into 1 and extend the renewal date until mid 2026. Six days later, they sold him another subscription for the same thing and 3 days after that, sold him another. It's scandalous how many popups they have and even worse the fact that they take advantage of their already paying customers. For shame Avast.

EDIT: I don't seem to have received any request for additional information as suggested by Avast below. Yet more sneakiness.

Tired of AD pop-ups

I am staisfied with Avast's performance, but I rated it a 3 and not a 5 star because I am so tired of their popups wanting me to buy just 1 more service. I bought the upgrade, that should be sufficient. If I say no once to an additional add-on, it will still be a NO the 100th time the ad pops up on my screen.
