Booked a compact, got an estate.
It was a nice cart and the pick up and drop off were smooth, but I booked a compact and got an estate car. Obviously they just give you whatever suits them with no consideration to what you actually booked.

Europcar Toll charges rip-off policy
We rented car in Portugal from europcar for two weeks, we were advise to get the toll package for €18 a per day which would cover all toll cost, but when we got home after our vacation europcar charged our credit card other €78. We contested this and the company denied our claim and said this was policy. We were told the €18 per day for 12 days at €216 would be more than enough to cover all tolls, as we did plan to travel a lot over on vacation. Now we are being told is the €18 per day was only for the transponder use and all toll charges are extra. This was not explained like this at the rental desk.
The total charges for the tolls were €80 so the transponder usage cost almost 3 times as much as the tolls. I would have never paid €18 a day if I knew this was only for a transponder usage. This is an absolute ridiculous rip off, total cost for tolls was almost €300. I would advise everyone to never use this company.
They have ripoff policies, BE AWARE!!!
The ugly truth
Our experience with this car rental company was extremely disappointing and put a damper on the start of our vacation.
The company’s computer system went down for approximately 45 minutes, leaving us and several other customers waiting without any updates. Traveling with five children made the situation even more stressful, but we understood that technical issues happen and were willing to be patient.
Unfortunately, one employee, Henry, made an already frustrating situation significantly worse. When we politely asked what the process would be if the computer system did not come back online, he bluntly told us that we would simply be out the money we had already paid, without offering any alternatives or attempting to help resolve the situation. His response was dismissive, unprofessional, and showed no concern for customers who had been waiting.
Throughout the delay, Henry remained seated in his chair, looking at his phone, and made no effort to proactively assist customers or provide updates. We also asked whether the company could provide transportation to another rental agency if they were unable to fulfill our reservation, or at the very least transport us to our Airbnb for the night so our family wasn’t stranded. Henry repeatedly told us there was nothing they could do and offered no solutions or empathy for our situation.
To make matters worse, the manager instructed employees to begin completing paper rental contracts so customers could get on their way. Henry openly refused, stating, “I refuse to fill out any paper. I’m not doing that. I’ll go home.” Instead of following management’s direction and helping customers, he continued to be rude, dismissive, and disrespectful.
I do want to recognize another employee, Roya, who remained calm, professional, and accommodating throughout the ordeal. While the situation was beyond her control, she made every effort to assist customers, answer questions, and provide the level of customer service we expected. Her professionalism stood in stark contrast to Henry’s behavior, and we truly appreciated her willingness to help during a frustrating experience.
Technical issues can happen with any company, and most customers understand that. What customers remember is how they are treated when things go wrong. Unfortunately, Henry’s lack of professionalism, refusal to assist, unwillingness to follow management’s instructions, and complete lack of empathy turned an inconvenient delay into an incredibly stressful experience for our family. I hope management recognizes Roya for her outstanding customer service and addresses Henry’s behavior so that no other customers have to endure the same treatment.
Wrong vehicle for a disabled person
Months ago we booked and paid for a VW Sharan to use to take our grandchildren on holiday. Went to pick it up today, no Sharan available. They've given us a van with seven seats. My husband took it as there was no choice other than to not go on holiday. I am disabled, and am also currently recovering from a total hip replacement operation. I can't lower the passenger seat, as with a car, in order to get in without pain. There is a step to climb onto, as you would expect with a van. I've just tried it and am now back in bed in extreme pain. Nice one Europcar
Worst guest experience ever
Worst guest experience ever. More than 1h30 to get the car !
Terrible App and website
This is a review for the App and website.
I tried to book a car rental while I was in Spain, tried the app, every time it charged my card for 0 euro instead of the full price, and the booking didn't went through. Then I tried to app, the money got blocked on my card, but there was an error processing the payment and no booking was made. Tried it again next day after the money got unblocked but same result...
Then I e-mail Europcar and was passed from one department to another, al giving generic answers without actually reading the information I was providing. They didn't even replied to my last email after they requested more information. 0/5 customer service experience.
Went to Sixt, where the booking was flawless, no error and easy and helpful staff at the counter.
No explanation for no deposit refund
No explanation for no deposit refund. We rented a midsize SUV in Germany. The price quoted on expedia more than doubled at pick up including deposit and added insurance. While I got a return statement I NEITHER received my deposit refund NOR a final statement of the breakdown of charges after the return. When I tried to track down the information on their website with my confirmation info, nothing came up, and their email contact page gave me an error. I finally found an email somewhere online and have yet to hear back. I feel cheated
I am extremely disappointed with my…
I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Europcar.
I was provided with a Jeep Avenger that was stated to have a full tank of fuel. However, after driving only 195 km, I had to add 29 liters of petrol to refill the tank. This would correspond to an apparent fuel consumption of almost 15 L/100 km, which is completely unrealistic for this vehicle. The normal fuel consumption of a Jeep Avenger is around 5.6–7.0 L/100 km in mixed driving conditions.
I contacted Europcar Customer Service, attached my fuel receipt, a detailed PDF report with all calculations and supporting information, and explained why the numbers clearly indicate that the vehicle was not supplied with a full tank.
Instead of reviewing the objective evidence, my complaint was rejected.
It is Europcar's responsibility to provide the vehicle with the fuel level stated in the rental agreement. Customers should be able to rely on the company's representation that the car is supplied with a full tank.
What disappointed me the most was not only the fuel issue itself, but the complete refusal to objectively assess the evidence I provided. This is not the level of transparency or customer service I expected from an international rental company.
I hope Europcar will reconsider my case (Reference No. 26961959) and handle it fairly.
Terrible Experience at FOX Rent-a-Car/Europcar at LAX
We had an absolutely horrible car rental experience at LAX on July 11, 2026. We arrived around 11:15 AM and had pre-paid through Expedia. We waited almost an hour in a hot building with very limited seating just to check in. The facility was extremely crowded, and many customers were waiting over an hour (some 2) for their vehicles.
The associate told us an upgrade would cost $200 plus taxes, which was just over $220. I remember this clearly because I called my sister to make sure the upgrade was okay since she was covering the cost and paying us back. After authorizing the charge, we were told we would have to wait 45 minutes for a car because none were available. To be clear, our original rental car was not available either. We ended up waiting over another hour.
We finally received a car that was dirty and smelled. There were almost no cars in the lot, and we did try to switch to a different vehicle, but the only other option was not a 6-seater, which was the reason we had paid to upgrade in the first place.
We arrived at 11:15 AM and didn't leave until approximately 1:30 PM. We lost over two hours of our vacation just trying to get a rental car.
The billing was another issue. We were told the upgrade would be just over $220, but the paperwork we received stated the charge would not exceed $304. That was already different from what I had told my sister the upgrade would cost. Because my husband was hot, tired and frustrated he didn’t notice the cost difference.
We were later charged approximately $390, supposedly due to a charge for a full tank of gas. We had filled the car in Malibu the day before and had barely driven it, so there was more than half a tank remaining when we returned it.
When we contacted customer service, they were rude and dismissive. They offered only a small credit toward a future rental, which is useless because we will never rent from them again. When my husband requested to speak with a supervisor, we were told someone would call within 72 to 96 hours. When he asked to speak with the supervisor who was apparently there, the representative refused. She told him… we are not going to do that today sir (with a rude tone).
This was an unacceptable experience from start to finish. Long waits, a dirty and smelly vehicle, unexpected and questionable charges, and terrible customer service.
We rented through Europcar, not FOX, but apparently they are connected or operated by the same company. Travelers should be aware of this and carefully check all paperwork and charges before signing anything.
**We will never rent from this company again.**
They don't hold your paid reservation if your flight is delayed
Paid in full for the car and for the full insurance. My flight was delayed, so I had to pick up the car later than expected. I called a few hours before the initial pickup time. They said it was OK and would hold the reservation, only to find out the car was no longer available when I got there. They offered to find me another car, which was an extra 180 euros.
AVOID!! AVOID!! LEFT STRANDED IN STANSTED
Booked a hirecar through Booking.com to pick up in Stansted - brought driver licence and passport for id but as im from northern ireland they needed the paper part of our licence which wasnt made clear on booking voucher.
I offered to get my son to scan it and email it but this was refused and they refused to hire me a car thus leaving me stranded with no way to get our family to our airbnb.
the staff were very unconcerned and quickly moved on to other customers - having googled solutions my son recommended that we get a licence check code from the DVLA and this was also mentioned on Europcar booking instructions - i got the code but when i presented it to Europcar they wouldnt even look at it.
VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE and would never use again
thankfully when I contacted their accounts department we were able to get a full refund.
TOTALLY UNRELIABLE AND UNCONCERNED THAT WE WERE STRANDED WITH NO FORWARDING TRANSPORT
Dear Europcar Customer Service,
Dear Europcar Customer Service,
I am writing to formally complain about my recent rental experience.
First, I did not receive the vehicle I booked (Skoda Scala). Instead, I was given a Citroën Berlingo, a much larger vehicle that caused significant difficulties fitting into a narrow garage at my accommodation.
Second, I noticed an unauthorized attempt to charge €138 to my account, which I did not approve and which was never explained to me.
Third, €386 was withheld from my deposit for an alleged repair, but I have not received any invoice, estimate, or documentation justifying this amount.
I request a full explanation and itemized documentation for both charges, and immediate reimbursement of any amounts that cannot be justified. I expect a response within 7 business days.
I already have timestamped documentation of the vehicle's condition and reserve the right to escalate this complaint to consumer protection authorities if not resolved satisfactorily.
Overcharging and bad communication.

Unacceptable Downgrade & Mandatory Surcharge Trap (Contract: 56814546)
I booked a Compact SUV (Jeep Renegade / CGAR) with Europcar Beauvais for a 2,400 km family trip with 5 people.
Instead, they forced us into a subcompact Toyota Yaris Cross (urban B-segment, physically unfit for 5 passengers + luggage). When we refused, staff demanded an extra €250 surcharge just to give us the space we originally paid for.
Our written request during the trip to exchange the car was completely ignored. To top it off, Yaris Cross is not even listed in Europcar’s official T&Cs under the Compact/CGAR category.
Selling one category and delivering a smaller car while demanding more money is a misleading commercial practice.
Fix Case 26823756 before this is escalated further via CEC/ECC-Net and ECRCS.
They charged us 100 eur extra for fuel
They charged us 100 eur extra for fuel. We got it 1/8 tank and they papered it as they give a full tank. I was lucky that I took a picture of fuel/km in the car on the first day so at the end of the rental I showed it to them and they said the refund will come in 3days. It has been a month and I still didn’t received my refund. Its ridicoulous. Also many hidden fees… extra 20 euro for highway (even if you don’t use it). Another extra 20 for “picking up the car in busy place” which is the airport or in the city centre. So basically wherever you pick it up it is extra 20 eur. :) we expected to pay 70 eur and ended up paying thriple. Watch out for this company. Wouldn’t recommend.
Do not use Europcar Cardiff Roath…
Do not use Europcar Cardiff Roath unless you want to be scammed and stonewalled. I booked and paid in full over a week in advance for an Intermediate class vehicle (VW Golf / T-Roc or similar).
When I arrived, they handed over the keys to a Ford Puma—a subcompact vehicle in a completely lower category. There was no apology, no explanation, and no offer of a reduced price or partial refund. They simply tried their luck, hoping I wouldn't notice or care. To make matters worse, they sneaked the vehicle through the paperwork and tricked me into signing the agreement without once mentioning they were downgrading the car I had paid for.
When I sat in the car and realized how small it was, I went straight back inside to demand the Intermediate vehicle I actually paid for. The staff refused to swap it, claimed they had "nothing else," and stated the manager had gone home. I had to force the desk agent to write down on paper that no manager was on site and no correct cars were available.
I specifically booked a larger, comfortable Intermediate car to take my elderly mother on a 6-hour round trip to her brother's funeral. Forcing an elderly woman with mobility needs into a cramped, lower-category vehicle on an emotionally draining day is absolute disgusting behavior. Zero empathy, zero customer service, and zero accountability.
This is a classic "bait and switch" operation—a clear breach of contract under UK Consumer Law. I have formally logged a complaint ticket (Ref: 26934901), and if this is not rectified with a full refund and compensation, I will be escalating this directly to the BVRLA (British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association) and initiating a credit card chargeback.
Be warned: Europcar Cardiff Roath will take your money for a decent car and hand you a budget box without telling you. Extremely dodgy company run by dishonest staff. Avoid at all costs!
**⭐☆☆☆☆ (1/5)**
**⭐☆☆☆☆ (1/5)**
I have rented cars from many international companies over the years, but **Europcar has provided the worst customer service I have ever experienced.**
A flat tire turned into a complete nightmare because of Europcar's incompetence.
I was told my car had a spare wheel and to change it myself. The vehicle **did not even have a spare wheel.** After several unanswered and disconnected calls, I was instructed to take a taxi at my own expense to Verona Airport to collect a replacement vehicle.
As a result, I spent **almost an entire day of my family vacation** dealing with Europcar's mistakes. My wife and my 6-year-old daughter were left waiting outside our hotel with all of our luggage for hours while I travelled back and forth.
I paid **€160 in taxi fares**, which Europcar promised would be reimbursed. Despite sending **three emails**, providing my booking details and reference number, I have received **no reply whatsoever**. They have completely ignored my claim and taken no responsibility for the damage they caused.
This is not simply poor customer service—it is a complete lack of respect for customers. Once they have your money, you are left to deal with the consequences on your own.
I strongly advise anyone considering Europcar to think twice. There are many rental companies in Europe that value their customers far more than Europcar does.
I am still waiting for my €160 reimbursement and compensation for the vacation day that Europcar ruined.
Europecar Portugal unable to manage to…
Europecar Portugal unable to manage to Basics .. car was 25 minutes late even though I was delayed 30 mins for pick up. I called to explain I wanted to drop off a day later on Monday as the hire centre was closed Sunday they said I had to drive to another place to physically add a day ,which is crazy .. in today’s system generated world. Then when I agreed to take it back to another centre I was charged twice the rental ( a further 250 euros for that ) WHY NOT TELL PEOPLE THIS AT THE START WHEN THEY ASK !! Terrible service all round. Plus the insurance via booking isn’t valid
